Not too much for me to say about this wallpaper that hasn't already been said: Dalarty has provided a descriptive walk through all the way from the concept idea, to its execution and ultimately its fruition. And you can really see how that careful planning paid off. But it just goes to show, good ideas take time---and a whole lot of patience!

High School and Anime

I was watching a new anime the other day("To Love Ru" I think is the name.) And I realized that majority of the animes involve High School, or High School Students. I get the concept that it is easy to set the story that way, but then the story loses it originality. It makes the story more memorable and enjoyable when it does not take place in the same setting as a different story. I'm just curious how much people feel the same, or different.

I think it goes without saying that the Japanese have a serious obsession with youth...this is symbolically evident in many aspects of japan culture, for example; the bonsai tree (eternally young), the national obsessions with kawaii (cuteness) and the short-lived beauty of sakura in bloom are just a few examples...This is just off the top of my head but I suppose the anime world is so saturated with high school stories because a large proportion of the population becomes nostalgic over what epitomizes the best days of their lives...
personally I enjoy the endless escapades of clueless Japanese highschool students :P

I would love it alot more if anime was just used as a form of multi settings, not just high school.

There're tons of animes that use school life and tons others that don't.

School life in general for me is really fun because I get to watch what they do in high school that I never got to do like culture fests, and every school life anime tries to make it feel different by giving the characters different uniforms to wear and sometimes the school building itself can get some pretty wicked designs like the one in Kanon. Japan is really obsessed with youth and cuteness but those two things I quite enjoy watching so I don't mind it at all as long as they can keep coming up with different plots, more unique characters etc to try to make their anime interesting instead of copying a lot of material from other animes.

Having the same setting does not mean that the story will lose its originality.

I agree that many manga/anime involve high school, but I do not believe that being set in high school restricts the plot. Personally the plot is the most important in whether the story is original. Therefore, being set in high school does not affect whether the story appears original or not.

Rather than some obsession about youth (although there's also some truth in that) I'd say it's simply the target audience.
With them being high schoolers themselves (or similar levels) it's no wonder that the setting also lands there (and the notoriously mini-skirt school uniforms also help getting some other audience groups, but that's another story)

It kind of looks like Ah My Goddess or something similar, but there's that ecchi factor >:3 emoticon But I'm not into the sci-fi/mecha stuff in that anime.
The manga is also much better (I think)
But indeed it's very simple... just make a manga/anime with hot girls with miniskirts and a guy as main character and you get millions views 8)E emoticon

Just as Longbow said that "there're tons of animes that use school life and tons others that don't."

But, I believe that obsession is not the case here. I'm talking about the target market for most anime are for Shounen / young boys, and most of these audiences are still in school. So it's not that strange for most anime to have a school setting.

If you see in a larger context, you can find almost the same amount of anime not taking place in school. These anime are targeted for much more adult viewers. Something like Elfen Lied, or even Gundam 00.

It's true high schoolers can be the target audience , but if you look at it another way it attracts almost all age groups, why? Because almost no matter what age you are.. you wanna be in high school, young, high school, old? high school, bored in the dull days of middle age? high school. Tired of being bogged down with work or studying for college, back to the easy days of high school.

I think it is a decently significant time for anyone you are in the middle or end of puberty, dating, driving, peer-pressure, and by the time you are out of high school usually you are or considered an adult. And for most it has memories of times that they wouldn't want to forget so easily. But this is all baseless so take it anyway you want.

I couldn't be anymore agree with the post above. But I think it's unfair to say that majority of the anime have high school setting. I think it's more in the 'school' or 'campus' area than just in high school.

I think it falls back to their living habits.
High school represents a time in Japanese life when more is possible. Western life is well free and vague... we say 30 is the new 20, I don't think I need to say more. In high school Japanese have choices that they can make for themselves after being pressured by their parents to succeed (this doesn't stop, actually it seems to get rather fierce in high school, but still it is in the control of the person and not the people surrounding them) and before they start a family and have a much more demanding lifestyle. High school must represent opportunity and fantasy to the average rigid Japanese lifestyle. It embodies a brief period of freedom, being young enough that all is new and having the leeway in life to explore it. This is the opinion of an outsider, but that is the best I can figure.

Yes this theme is over used. I think if I see another high school harem anime i'll scream, or read/hear 'normal high school boy/girl' i'll gag.

But there are also a lot of American movies that use high school as a setting and high school students as main characters (or have I watched the Disney channel too much?)- but not as much as anime seems to.

But to put everthing into perspective not every anime is set in high school; There are quite a few out there that aren't like the .hack series, Tsubasa Chronicles, Romeo x Juliet, Slayers, Ghost in a Shell etc., and are still popular.

I think high school is just an easy setting to write about, where the main characters aren't completely bound by to a particular way of life but are old enough to create almost unlimited possibilities. After all when else after high school do lots of different people group together, in large enough groups to prove interesting?

I personally dislike the high school anime thing as well, there are odd one's that I like like School Rumble, Mai Hime, Minami-ke. mostly others are bad and getting lame!

I think Harem anime is what is getting to me things are getting recycled more and more, I don't mind school setting but one guy 50 girls we all love you kinda stuff really starting to suck!

Ecchi high school anime's as well, they are so lame looking at new Kamen no Maid Guy and Rosario to Vampire as example it bad and sucks!

I'm enjoying more adult things like Gundam 00, GITS, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Appleseed, Sayanara Zetsubo Sensei etc more
