This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

It's usually got something to do with me being an anime fan and it's usually girls that call me a pervert. It's been happening a lot lately, and I don't take that kind of stuff personally, in fact it usually makes me laugh out real hard.

I always bring my laptop to school and one day I was showing one of my friends the pictures of my room (I also posted these pictures in this forum in the Pictures section) where I had a bunch of anime pictures on my wall, anime figurines and models etc. One of the girls in my group who I was working with walked by and was shocked. She called her friends over and the one who initially saw the pictures called me a pervert. I laughed out real loud because I didn't know why I had to be labeled as a pervert just because I collected the stuff I did.

And then, for one of my projects for university, we were asked to find a way to make a paper prototype and classify 25-75 items. I chose all the animes I had seen back then (around 50) and classified them. I finished the project about a week before the due date and around that time the same girl as I mentioned above asked me to see the prototype. One of the animes I had classified was Kanon and she immediately yelled out pervert in the study room. Once again I laughed and asked why. She said it was because it was adapted from "one of those games where you date girls and do things to them." And I asked her which animes she had watched because I had assumed she hadn't watched much to even grasp the fact that that anime was made by KyoAni who also produced Lucky Star and Haruhi. She said she only seen a bit of Lucky Star, seen Haruhi, and read the Death Note manga. I told her that "the company that animated Kanon also animated Haruhi and Lucky Star, you realize that?" to try to clarify that that anime was produced by a respectable company, not one that makes hentai.

Then just yesterday I decided to buy a Haruhi t-shirt and I told my mom about this and she also labeled me as a pervert.

So my question is; why the heck do girls say that to me? If I saw pictures of a girl's room on her laptop (which I highly doubt will happen) with tons of posters of near-naked guys I wouldn't freak out like that, in fact I see it as absolutely normal (at least it hints that she's heterosexual). Don't get me wrong, I love it when people freak out at stuff that they just shouldn't be because it makes me laugh much like how people get impressed with people who "pimp" out their honda civic with neon lights and speakers.

So in the end, why did the girls I met do that? Do the girls in this forum react that way?

PS: Sorry if the post was long but I just had to emphasize my experiences to draw a clear picture of the situations I've been to.

Women to me, seem to shake their heads at any sign of a man showing any form of masculinity, in this case the posters and what not. It's just human nature for women who understand nothing of the topic, yet know about the +18 H-scene in all its infamous glory, to immediately speculate about the likes of you. I get the same head shaking reaction every time I mention something like that or the characters in the anime I like, but that's just normal. It's normal for a man to like girls to a lustful extent, and hanging anime posters of them is no different than posters of real women I've seen hanging here at college. It's just normal human sexuality, and the women just don't understand that that will spill over into male anime viewers as well. Just shrug it off, you're not a pervert, they're just being women, and you're just being a guy. It's typical for women to think that the men thew know should be completely self-obedient and not show any feelings of lust or physical attraction.

Back when I got into anime in the early nineties, that was one of the stock three reactions you got from people when you said you liked anime:

1) You still watch cartoons? What are you, five?

2) You watch those Jap porn toons? What are you, some sort of freak?

3) You watch those Jap toons with the hyper violence? What a nerd.

There's a lot of ill informed people out there, and they just make assumptions based on what they know. I'd go on not letting it bother you. There also seems to be a bit of a double standard developing in anime fandom where Yaoi-fangirls hate all over people who are fans of moe, but can't see that Yaoi is the same sort of self-graftification story-telling. It doesn't help that they tend to get the casual anime fans in on their side (A: because they're girls, and B: because they hate everything that isn't or isn't just like Cowboy Bebop & Dragonball Z) to further alienate the moe fans. Just call 'em out on it. It's one thing to not like it, but that's no reason to be cruel to another person.

The same things happen to me. When ever I talk about anime at my school, they all label it as porn if its not Naruto. News Flash: Naruto isn't that great.

Lol, I call that to my hubby and some of my male friends most of the time, but only as a joke. I don't really mind what they watch or what merchandise they got, since I've watched several ecchi and hentai myself (not only that, but a majority of the posters in me and my hubby's room are mostly female characters, some are unknown CGs possibly from hentai games). I'm guessing those who have called you a perv are truly misinformed about anime and just go on assuming things. And the funny thing is that a majority of anime consists of female characters.

But yeah, you're a guy, and I guess it's natural that these things happen. They'll get over it somehow. Just continue to not minding their reactions.

Argh, I can understand if they call that to someone who watches hentai and only hentai but... come on.

Well, then again, people always tell me something like this: " You should stop watching cartoons. You're too old to watch it." Even my mom says that sometimes. But really, half of animes aren't meant to be seen by -12s.

Anyway, I have no idea why they call you pervert. Although I guess pictures of animes girls with... soft ecchi isn't going to clear your image to other people. I guess some people just don't have enough insight to not try and yell out something like that without considering that persons feelings and investigating 1st, and not just judging by 1st impression. Most people nowadays are like that, no matter women or men.

Although if that person is on good terms and maybe even close to you, it maybe just some joke. One to just to be laughed about. It's not weird for that to happen, in fact, it happens everyday somewhere.

There is also the possibility that that person is just too straight and honest (and innocent as well). You know what I mean. I don't think a further explanation is neeede for this one.

Still, the image of that girl you said gives me the impression that she's just too straight, honest and too innocent. The funny thing is, I imagined her as Mana from the Sola anime. No idea why. It just, popped up like that. ~(@_@)~ emoticon

Anyway, I wonder if there's other reasons. I'm sure there are.( []-[])9 emoticon

Being in college, it's the norm to walk into a dorm room and see pictures and centerfolds or pinups of beautiful girls on the walls in both guys' and some girls' rooms, to which the latter would invoke the typical male response upon seeing such("Yea, that's hot"). Of course, Paris already has a trademark on that phrase.

I'd have reason to surmise that such rudeness is in response to the fact that it's anime. There's that whole misconception that all anime is about is girls and heavy fanservice. I'm not going around the fact that most series in part focus on the cuteness of girls in their mid-early teens, but trying to point out the problem of this mentality that some people adopt which focuses on just that. This is dual sided as well in that there are individuals who like anime solely for oodling, to which the label of "pervert" would probably be suitable.

Again, it would mainly deal with just being anime. You open up your laptop and have a wallpaper of the curvacious Jessica Alba on screen (Not in anything suggestive just her standing there...no matter what, Jessica looks downright amazing...errr...enough of my ramblings), a girl walking by probably won't give it much of a second thought, and she'd be sure to agree if asked that Alba is indeed one of the hottest young ladies to grace us.

On the other hand, if the girl walking by had in mind that all anime is about drawn up girls then they'd react differently if seeing an anime wallpaper instead.

Note: This is dependant on what kind of wallpaper you have as well. If you're one of those oodlers, there isn't much to argue in your defense. Though, a simple anime wallpaper devoid of anything that would otherwise prove the contrary yet incur such rudeness would be ignorance on their part.

I think people just dont know what anime truly is. It is true in a lot of anime posters or pictures you see lots of half naked girls, maybe thats why they label you as being a pervert. put it this way, if you dont know wut anime is and you see a half naked anime chic as a wallpaper or picture in your friends room what would you think. I probably think what the hell.

I use, for my laptop's wallpaper, the same picture in my AP avatar (except not cropped). The weird thing is, she watches *some* anime and reads *some* manga, but it seems like she completely avoids any animes that have lots of girls in them. Funny thing is, the other anime I had archived was Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and I distinctively remember her saying "See? This one too, it's all girls." which put me laughing and rolling on the ground, although I think she might've changed her opinion after I showed her the first half of Episode 21 in the first season.

I guess what I've observed about her is she classifies anime into two categories, the "perverted" half, and the "cool" half, the perverted half has pretty much been explained, but the "cool" half would be stuff like Death Note, I think I also remember her saying she's watched Naruto...

Higurashi?
If anyone ever labels that anime(or its game) as a fanservice-only and all-girls anime then I must say, that person is out of their mind. Higurashi is a philosophical and gory anime centered around a rumour and told similar like unearthing an ancient history where there are many versions of the story and each tells something about the real history. Anyway, the thing is, Higurashi is not a perverted anime. Full-stop.

I guess your friend is... well maybe she has a wrong idea of what animes are really are. especially where there are a lot of girls in it. Not all a-lot-of-girl animes are perverted. Some are serious and have a lot of great messages and require the watcher to think a bit(sometimes a lot) to fully understand the anime. Maybe you should explain to her this. I guess she's not watching a-lot-of-girl animes because she... well, I guess she's straight. And she thinks those kinds of animes are not straight. You know what I mean. Don't you?

Well, it's true that some animes are rather perverted. But not all animes can either go to just those 2 classes. I completely disagree. But that's just my opinion. Let's keep it that way, shall we?( []-[])9 emoticon

Anyway, I think she's rather confuse. Maybe you should go and help her.|(o_o) emoticon

Oh good grief...=_=""
i hope you (as in ALL of you) are not classifying all girls into such a dense, naive category... because the majority out there are quite intellectual.

your friend's reaction (and mum's) is clearly caused by ignorance to the subject (i.e. anime). it's the same for all humans. if they dont know something, they either stereotype or make up an outrageous opinion on the spot.

i once heard a girl saying something (cant quite remember) . something along the lines of "...i'm not like all those asian porn girls!"... i.e. stating that, in her vastly discriminating and racist opinion, that only asian girls are porn girls. Yet another example of how totally, incomprehensibly dumb people can be because CLEARLY asian girls are NOT the ONLY porn girls in the world ... =_=" ridiculous.

to answer your second question... no. i really doubt that the girls of AP react that way simply because they have and are seemingly exposed to FAR more knowledge of anime than the girls/women you know are.

So someone who watches hentai is a pervert? I tend to disagree, because a lot of anime fans don't call some girls into yaoi perverts, but then someone like me who would love to see a +18 anime with an actual interesting storyline like say, Beat Angel Escalayer or Wordsworth is then labeled a hentai? Look the H-market is overflowed with hentai that are all about the scenes (you catch my drift), but there's actually ones that try to develop a storyline and heir characters. Watching hentai should not make you a pervert, I mean really when I watch it, I'm just looking for anime I normally watch like a Haruhi, except with the love story going the whole 9 yards, so in that state of mind I would hardly state that as being perverted. There does tend to be a double standard indeed though, because I've noticed at cons that all these people walk around with yaoi paddles and talk about it, but then the moment I mention hentai, I get that stare of disgust, like I stated something taboo. You can't flat out eject hentai and then expect to act like yaoi is ok, and I think a lot of anime fans need to realize this.
