This wallpaper gives us a perfect example of how a simple manga scan can be turned into a beautiful vector. Not only did danalm trace the lineart, but he also added amazing details and a simple, yet wonderful background. Furthermore, the wallpaper shows us how the monochromatic style can make your work look really interesting.

Well I am a big fan of detailed anime or manga or art like Vampire Hunter D or Trinity Blood and Kazuya Minekura's art is gorgeous.. but there are some simple drawings like FMA that are unique and have a good storyline. so what do you guys think? details or simple? though i think many'll pick detail i cant ignore all the simple ones cause some look nice simple, if you get what i mean..

Personally, I've always enjoyed intricate designs, they're so nice to look at! x3
But I find that as long as the story line is good, why not give it a shot? The art is important, but only to a certain degree. Awesome story beats awesome art any day in my book.

When the drawings are heavily detailed the quality of animation suffers because of the time it takes to draw each frame. By the way, when I saw quality of animation, I don't mean how pretty it looks. I mean frame rate (24 fps as opposed to 6 fps) and how well it moves (does it have overlapping action, arcs work properly, timing is good, etc.)
I like pretty drawings as much as the next person, but because animation is what I do for a living, I can't ignore that either. I prefer the simpler stuff usually, since the animation is better. But since those are rare, I'll watch whatever. But it comes down to an engaging story, and engaging characters for me.

Either is fine, but I hate when the detailed drawings get really cluttered and you can't tell what's going on. If I had to pick one, I'd go with simple just because it's a lot easier to follow and can often be prettier because of its simplicity.

I know what your saying, I think I like some simple, and some detailed. Cause sometimes simple just sparks something... While detail looks really cool, simple can be nice too.

Though, some simple ones are just unoriginal, while others are unique. Unoriginal would look good, but its the same thing from a different one, and it sometimes may get annoying. Unique is a new style that I haven't seen yet, now whether it looks good or not depends.

I like both sometimes, but some simple ones may look bad, detailed is usually good, but if your hand drawing, ( sketch pencil, paper ) if you draw your character really small with a lot of detail it looks messy, so it depends..

And that is the problem with Manga-ka Artists, they have to draw everything within a few months because Anime- and Manga-Culture in Japanese is based on strict schedule-deadlines. Once in a convention back in Germany, those Manga-ka who were invited as Guest speakers in forum discussions kept telling us how hard it is to work "against the deadline" which is usually short term. We Fans may never know the details, I mean, for those who are just "idiotic watchers and admirers" and who take it for granted, easily overlook the shadow facades that the Animation and Manga Industry hides.

I bet you that more than 90% of the Japanese Manga and Animation Artists are overworked nerdies struggling for their money...

With me it's really more a question of "does the style fit the mood?" more than "do I like the style?" because I can't really say I have a constant opinion about detailed vs simple.

Detailled is my preferences.
it also has an indirect indication that they did their best to let you watch the anime.
for example Vexille. top notch detailled anime (movie) with a quite interesting story. i liked it.
however appleseed deus ex machine. also having amazing sense of detail has a bit bad story. however due to the details, i liked it.

to easy made anime makes me stop watching after a few minutes already.

Haha well many preferred simple here..yes its always the storyline in the end. but i think it'd be a waste if there was a very good story line anime with extremely simple common drawing dont you think?

The better the quality the more time it takes, but in reaity, artists who work under a tight schedule for their clients and bosses,... they haven't got that time. Unless you work in a team, being a modern Artist whether digital or classic drawings, is one of the hardest, most stressful and moreover most expensive jobs in the world. Those people even have to fight for their survivals because there are so many "good artists" in the world who starve and die on the streets because the competition is too tough, and only the best, barely 10% of all "good Artists" really make a living with that.

Referring to our Japanimation hobby. In reality there are so many Manga-ka in Japan, newcomers who want to be as good as the legendary Akira Toriyama, Leiji Matsumoto, Yuu Watase Eijiro Oda or Kishimoto, or "whoever else". When we see those Newcomer's work we think they are really good, phenomenal,... but how many would ever become as famous as those legendary Manga-ka?? Not many because what we see in our countries outside Japan is maybe not even 10% of the real amount of Manga and Anime of Japan. Wanna bet? I bet when I travel to Japan one day I will see so many Manga and Anime that I have never seen before in my life. The majority of the Manga Artists in Japan are poor. The reason for that is as I explained above...

Same goes for any other type of art and designs. People are fighting for their lives against the narrow competition. If you think that as an artist you are good, in reality you are not good enough, or just not lucky...

Detail and a good storyline (and the other important things, of course!) combined would be the most impressive Manga. In my opinion Comic Party (example) unites both parts. Even if that will take more time than an other Manga, let's say it like Loreal "Because I'm worth it". A Manga should be.

If the storyline of a detailed Manga is worse, I would drop it immediately. Although, I don't prefer such simple series like FMA. I'm fine with something like Shaman King. A little bit of detail.

I think that so long as there's a decent standard of art then I don't really mind how the overall style for the whole series...sometimes it fits (Spriggan, crayon shin-chan and FLCL) and sometimes it doesn't (studio ghibli movies)...but I figure, if there're episodes in the series or parts of a movie that don't look like shit every other episode (Dragon Ball Z, Evangelion) due to budgeting or just different artists for different parts of the project, then I think a little artistic freedom and creativity goes a long way with whatever anime it's attached to.
