Hardest Game You Have Ever Played
Well the hardest game I had to put the most effort into would have to FF7. It was a great game and I think I'll have to replay it. I also thought that Disgea was pretty hard and would also have to go with FF tatics.

Hmm...the hardest game ive ever played would be Devil May cry 3...because...they put one boss in every other level...and the bosses are basicly 3 times stronger than you...oh...and heath upgrades and iteams are waaaay to expensive
Oh I played that game and it was pretty hard. I agree that it was a pretty hard game and it looked awesome. It was vastly improved from the second one.
I think shin megami tensei: nocturne was pretty hard.

I am sad to say that I think harvest moon for the N64 was the hardest game I ever played. I spent hours running around and nothing happened. It was in those days before one went online to look for a walkthrough that another made, just to see if there was something you missed or did wrong. But maybe you mean hard in that it took effort to get through it, but that payed off (I stopped playing the game after 3 days, oh and any metroid game I find excrussiationly hard).
For me, I'd have to say that the hardest game I've ever played was Koudelka, for the PS1. It was not so much "hard" hard, but that I found it difficult. You only had what you found. If you used the gun, you couldn't if you ran out of bullets. And after so long, the things you used died and you can't use anymore. And the bosses were really hard, especially at the end, though I think, for consistency with Shadow Hearts, you were supposed to lose.

I would have to say Shadow of the Beast on the Sega Genesis was the all time hardest game ever. Well, that and Ikaruga. Oh, and Mega Man, on the original on NES. Hard as hell...
I've played a lot of difficult games, but it's not until they become frustrating that I label them as 'hard'. On the first play through, Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) was extremely frustrating. Harder difficulties and the Hurricane packs made it even more frustrating, though to be honest, after it was all said and done, it was one awesome game, and I loved every minute of it. I don't think I'll be getting Ninja Gaiden Black any time soon though.

Ikaruga tops the list for me, not only do you have to worry about the hundreds of bullets flying your way, you have to watch out for numerous stage obstacles to boot. DMC 3 also gets honorable mention!

Unlimited SaGa. Extremely frustrating difficult RPG. I could never finish even the beginnings of the game.
I would hafta agree wit ArtsEnchantress saying Devil May CRy 3......but i didnt find the game that hard as i did the 2nd or 3rd boss which was harder than anything in the game but tha last boss.....i think it took me like 3 days to beat that boss...and then 4 days to beat the rest of the game....
The hardest game i've ever played was the very first RPG for the playstation one (in america) "beyond the beyond".
it was hard because random battles took place every 2-4 steps EVERYWHERE. most of the monsters you randomly encountered were ridiculously tough, wiping out your entire party easily. even if you were to level up, every battle felt like you were the underdog. also, there are hard challenges/puzzles and very very deep dungeons.
the music was great, and at the time, the 3D battles were pretty cool. but the long dungeons + 2-4 step random battles made the game unbearable.
i did beat it though. the last boss akkadias (As with any boss/monster in the game) was OD, wiping out your party in just 2 rounds. i was able to manage some hard core leveling up, but it barely makes the game any easier.
try it if you want a challenge

Maybe Mystic Quest on GameBoy: I was blocked during a year on this game...
And F-Zero GX is amazingly hard!

F-Zero GX is annoying in the fact if you crash once you're basically screwed...But The multiplayer can be fun.
Metroid Prime's Hard mode is a bit hard too.
