After months of work, chanelqueen17 has created a gorgeous scene of Alice and Oz from Pandora Hearts, using scans that didn't even feature both characters together. Even after spending so much time on matching the details of the characters to their new looks, chanelqueen17 didn't stop there and went all out on the background too! This wallpaper definitely needs to be seen!

Oh I definitely don't subscribe to any particular scene. It just happens to be the genre I listen to my most. One of all time favorite bands being Splashdown.

So, question for anyone who might know the answer. I have a Mac running OS X 10.4 and I use Quicktime with the DivX for Mac codec to watch most of my anime (usually .avi). Things that don't work however, I use the fantastic VLC program. VLC tends to play everything that Quicktime can't. But there have been a few problem files that won't play, such as certain .mkv files. Now, I'm noticing that a lot of anime is being released as .mp4 with this new fangled H264 codec. I might be wrong, but I vaguely remember Quicktime supporting H264, yet I cannot play these mp4/H264 files. Now, I've read a several articles about playing H264 files and such, but most of them are with regards to setting it up for a Windows (ie, using Media Player Classic and other video players that work only for Windows). Is there any hope for Mac users to play H264 now that it seems like avi/DivX days are coming to an end? With mp4/H264 taking over most animes, is this the end of watching anime on a Mac? Any help or comments is greatly appreciated!

You should try playing H264 .mp4 files on a "computer"

sorry, couldn`t help myself XD

i use the FDDshow codecs to play the H264 and that made them work on any player, including Quicktime and Realoneplayer (but i dont have those installed on MY computer because... well... they suck ass)

Windows won't solve your problem. Its the codecs. There are multiple versions of mp4 out there. Quicktime attempted to play them on my windows machine and failed as well. My VLC media player seems to have taken care of all the filetype that windows media player doesn't do for me. I haven't gotten all that many anime in mp4 or mkv, but VLC has played all the ones I've gotten so far. Do you have the latest version of VLC? I'm not sure what else there is to use besides it.

VLC owns! I still have no clue why 'standard' programs as WMP can't encode certain movies while a simple program like VLC can. Though, back to your problem: As hjohn06 said, it's all a matter of codecs. With all the different software and codecs around, it's pretty hard to find a good program which will play your anime. It really shouldn't be a matter of OS, as imo, Mac is a pretty good brand for multimedia. Anyway, you could try looking for special codec-packs on the internet which support programs like VLC or Realplayer. Otherwise, you might find a converter or something, to convert a .mp4 to .avi
Where the *** did you get .H264 files anyway? It really doesn't look like a standard filetype to me...

When I go to animesuki.com, there are files that are listed at h264 version. (Also, the new season of School Rumble by Wannabefansubs are only in h264. :D ) In any case, thanks for the help. I think my VLC is up to date. But the thing is, my friend who uses Windows VLC can play some files that I can't. It's very weird. Oh well, for now, it's not so big of a deal. I just want to prepare myself to be able to play h264 files in case that's where the future of anime and video is going towards.

By the way, I found an interesting forum topic where it explains the whole h264 thing here.

h.264 is a revolution. It's a very good codec (better graphics as divx, xvid etc.) but it requires a reasonably new pc to decode (unlike divx/xvid).

In Linux I use the program Mplayer and I noticed it has a Mac OSX version too...

MPlayerOSX

Considering the linux version has h.264 support, the OSX version should have it too ;-)

Note :

If it runs crappy you should try to locate the configuration file and append

fps = "23,976"
subfps = "23,976"
sid=0

to it.

I also have a Mac (OS X 10.4.6), I've found that VLC seems to play most files. MPlayerOSX also seems to work quite well.

You may want to download a nightly build of VLC, rather than the official release. I've found it plays some of the files that wouldn't play before.

Though a lot of MKV files (I know it's a container, not a codec) I have problems with VLC, Quicktime and MPlayerOSX all refuse to play most of them, and soft subtitles never work properly.

BEGIN MOANING

I've been trying to get my Mac to play some files properly for the last half a year, so far I've had no success. With one series I had to admit defeat and find my windows laptop, even with windows I still have some problems.

The new codecs are annoying me, I used to be able to watch files I'd downloaded on my PDA without conversion, looks like that's going to be coming to an end soon as well. (Problem is I don't care about file size and quality(within reason), I'd rather have a file that uses less processing power, and so less battery power)

END MOANING

Where does one get these "nightly builds" of VLC? What is it exactly?

It's an experimental version that may have bugs, but also has fixes and possibly additional features.

VLC Nightly Builds

There is a new (non-experimental) version of VLC out now (6/5/06) as well.

Why don't you try CCCP? I mean it owns VLC any day of the week! CCCP stands for Combined Comunity Codec Pack and was realsed specifically for playing anime, since as everyone else says, there are a crapload of different codecs. It comes with ZoomPlayer which is awesome and Media Player Classic. It can also play ogg and vorbis files I believe.

For playing .mkv's you need to get the Matroska Pack. I don't know if there are different version but just google it.

So once again, get CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack which owns VLC) and Matroska Pack for playing .mkv's! I wont provide links cause you can google it.

It might "own" VLC on a Windows computer, but unfortunately this discussion is about Apple Macs. If you can show me where I can download a version for a mac I'll be very impressed.

Here is a quote from the CCCP WiKi FAQ:

MacOS 10.x
Not supported. Sorry, UNIX-based OS's doesn't support DirectShow.

Yah, I'd be all over that CCCP but likke DeepDragoon said, we're talking about Macs here... Although, the new Intel Macs can support Windows XP, so, technically, if you have an Intel Mac, you could just boot up in Windows, and get CCCP...

Ok I have VLC on both my windows and macx86. They both run the x264 pretty well. Then again it's running on a 2ghz pentium M so I'm using a fairly new laptop. Same specs for the Mac by the way. It's running on an Intel pentium M and works just fine.
