Apple?
I am going to get a macbook hopefully in the next few days with the new santa rosa CPU with 1GB of RAM (Black Macbook). I have been using Windows Vista for almost 9 months, and I am kind of sick of it. Don't get me wrong, Vista has potential but Microsoft has to fix up there act or there gonna have lots of problems in the future. This is going to be my first mac so I was just wondering if anyone here has a mac? Please don't say Apple sucks or Microsoft sucks.
I have a couple of Mac's, though right now I'm on my laptop running Linux (Fedora Core 8). I know there are other people around here using OS X.
Have you used OS X much before, tried a friends Mac etc...?
If you haven't bare in mind that it can take several weeks to get used to a different OS.

It's not that bad, I would say no more than five days because OS X is much more user friendly than windows.

I currently have a macbook right now, macs rawk cause you can have both windows and osx operating systems on a mac, where as with a pc, you can only have windows or linux etc. There are a few things i dislike about the mac, but when i run into them i just switch to my windows os and everything is good again. I would recommend a mac to anyone, they are good stuff.

Why?
When I bought my Mac Pro it was newly released and very good value for money. It has to be one of the easiest sytems I've owned to upgrade (admittedly the motherboard would be difficult to change), the build quality is good, it's quiet and it's proved to be pretty reliable (I've had it running continuously at ~95% CPU load on all cores for over two weeks).
Of course if you want to play games it's still best to buy a console or a PC.
Also are you sure that building your own laptop beats everything else, as the op will be getting/has a laptop?
Narutobattousaiwhere as with a pc, you can only have windows or linux etc.
You can now run OS X on PC too it's just not so easy to get it working and it may not be legal since you need to alter something.

Macs and windows each have their pro and cons. As a desktop computer I prefer a windows/linux and for a laptop i prefer my macBook.

That's the whole point. No fun in raping the online masses and asserting whose boos over the internet on a Mac. Also, Windows is in general easier to build for and code for since the registry is right there and that there is none with the Macs. Also, I love how on Macs an installer is a disc image, and in double-clicking it, it installs a virtual drive, because that totally makes sense. I'll give Mac the music editing programs, they got Windows FAR outdone there, but that's about it.

Unless you install Windows which is easy to do. The reason Mac's aren't so good for gaming is that unless you buy a Mac Pro you can't use a modern high end graphics solution.

OS X uses individual property list (plist) files for storing program variables similar to Linux's config files. Now I haven't done much programming in Cocoa myself but it doesn't seem difficult to use property list files. With the upside for users that if anything goes wrong it's easy to trash the programs related plist file rather than digging around in the registry.
Amusingly one of my Mac's is the only computer I own to recently have a registry (Windows), none of my custom PC systems have seen a Windows install for a long time.

Yeah thats true, my preferred way to install programs is using yum on my Fedora system, open up the terminal and type yum install program_name. nice and easy, no annoying installation/uninstallation wizards or disk images.

I own a Macbook with intel duel core 2. OSX is fine, easy to use, good to look at. Fair dues i cant play games but it doesnt get me down, the ps2 and ds suit me to a tea when it comes to my gaming needs.
I have 3 macs.
2 are mine, and one is my boyfriends.
I've had my titanium powerbook (equivelant of the macbook now) for over 5 years. that things is tough and Only problem I have ever had is a HD failure. I've dragged it up and down the east coast many times, and to japan and back. yes, thats what laptops are for, but usually a laptop only runs strong for 5 years when it sits on a desk and goes nowhere (or very few places)
I also have a mac pro that i bought when I graduated since i needed a powerhouse to run all my design and animation programs. Macs are made for design, and adobe macs for mac first and foremost which is why I always buy them. Also, Maya renders much faster on my macpro than if it were on a PC (unless there was a renderfarm around, but that doesn't count) I have encountered no problems yet.
The third is the mac mini. We use that one to watch stuff and surf the net on our LCD TV, and he uses it to surf the net and listen to music.
I prefer macs over PC's for a few reasons. I like the option of applecare. if i have a problem, I call, and they help me fix it, or I can take it to a store, and they look at it and fix it for free. I also just prefer the OS. I've disliked windows ever since they made DOS run in the background instead of being the main system. Now I can't fix/program jack on a PC. And like I said, it's what adobe programs for first. Since animation and graphic/web design are what I do, I need the industry standard to do it.

I don't own a Mac but I use one at school, I absolutely hate it. There are so many bugs, barely any hard drive space, half the time don't turn on, and you can't run anything on them. They're horrible. >.<

Im guessing the ones your school acquired were the old versions, Because the ones I use at college run like a treat.
The Macs in my university are the newest ones. I never liked macs, especially the ones in school because they're always loaded with viruses and when you stick a USB key in there so you can save your project or homework you have to scan it when you get home. But more so, building your own PC will always, always be better than buying a computer or any kind (with the exception of laptops). You can always build a better PC with a much lower price than if you bought something like a mac. It's fun and educational at the same time.
Also, I hate how Apple advertises their macs as if they're not PCs, because according to Wikipedia, "Macintosh, or for newer models, Mac, is a brand name which covers several lines of personal computers..."
