my laptop is going super slow for like no reason... i have run countless spyware and virus scans... then i unstalled half my programs so i have lots of memeory [those programs were games that were huge] but my computer is still going super slow... i have 2 gigs of ram wtf is wrong?!

I think you need to format lolz.

You see, computers are mysterious creatures. There can be many problems, it is very difficult to isolate what is really giving you problems. In this situation, it is best to just reformat your harddrive and reinstall your OS (windows, mac os, linux, whatever you use). If your computer is still sluggish after the reformat, there might be a hardware problem. A friend of mine recently had sluggish performace in games all of a sudden. I think we eventually isolated it to the mother board by testing every piece of hardware other than the motherboard. I hope your problem is purily software =)

But yeh there can be many reasons for the slow performance, could be bloatwares that installed along with other programs, some of them purely suck out your memory.

I guess you could reformat if it's the only choice you have left.
And next time make 3 partitons, 1 for JUST windows, dont touch that again.
And the other you can divide between games/vids/work/whatever and backup.

Organize your files and everything, defrag, just take care and be smart about what you install and you'll be fine.

I'm assuming you're using Windows XP, which I currently use. I once bought a new laptop computer (Compaq Presario) that came with Vista and 512MB of RAM, but was disappointed with the speed. Even on the first few days and practically with no new programs installed, it took nearly 2 minutes to boot up each time. Surfing the internet with it was somewhat of a pain, due to the sluggishness, especially when I tried to view streaming video content. Many people recommended that I get more memory (1GB RAM minimum).

But with the limited cash that I have, I decided to return it and instead optimize my old laptop (Dell Inspiron 9100). I first upgraded the memory to 1GB; that's two 512MB memory chips for a total of about $40, which I bought from Ebay. Then I looked at the Windows Task Manager and disable those processes that I'm not familiar with. The most common way (something you have already done) is to uninstall any unnecessary programs associated with the process name. But even after you do all that, there still are processes that are either left behind, or may possibly be spyware -related. This took some time, where I had to google each of the process name and find out whether it is safe to disable or not. If it's safe to do so, then I went to the Registry Editor by typing in "regedit" in the Run dialog box in Windows XP, use the Find feature and delete them one by one. This method is somewhat risky for those people who are not familiar with the Registry Editor; if you delete the wrong ones, it may cause Windows not to boot up properly the next time you turn it on. Therefore, proceed with caution.

Also when you notice within the Windows Task Manager, there are multiple instances of "svchost.exe", some of which eats up quite a bit of memory. When you type in "services.msc" in the Run dialog box, you'll get a list of all services currently running in the background. BlackViper.com has a handy chart (both for XP and Vista) where you can decide which services you can safely disable, therefore freeing up memory and CPU usage.

As a result of all the tweaking, my old laptop (2004 with XP) runs faster than the new one (2007 with Vista). Hope this helps!

Can you please specify your computer specifications (RAM is not enough to get a precise idea) and post a HiJackThis scan log ?
Beware, do not check and "fix" stuff unless you know what you're doing, this program gives you an overview of various things such as what runs at startup, which plugins are installed for IE, some parameters etc... there are lots of things which will come up that you shouldn't actually change.

By the way, did you perform a defrag recently ?

First of all, please post a full specify about your pc. This can be done with "cat /etc/cpuinfo" ; "lspci" and so on(in linux) OR with Everest in WIN (or just google it down from the manufacturer webpage). Second, you have to try to defragment with NOT the Microsoft application, I prefer you "O&O defrag" what you can find I think.. :). And the last one, I using Nod on my only WIN partition what is only for playing Vegas2+visual novels, and I've never got any virus. I checked it sometimes, but ... still 0. But if you want to be sure, just google a > "Free online virus scan" . I think McAffee will be the first or I don't know, but these web based scanners are very efficient, and the virus can't trick them so easily as the antivirus on your pc. Cause its only exist in the browser..in the ram.

The last one, ... I'm not sure to write this cause you're a Microsoft user, and I don't want anybody to change, but you should make a new small partition, install a Linux and run tests, benchmarks, checks from there. I always used those benchmarks^^..and you will see whats the matter..if it runs fast, then not the machine is the fault..

I suppose you're running windows since you have many huge games...
Don't rely on spyware scans under your running windows platform as they're not always effective.
You can try detaching your hard drive and scan it on a trustable computer and see if something can be found.
Also you should ctrl+alt+del to bring up your task manager and see if something is eating up your CPU power.
If cpu is idle, ram is empty and it still doesn't work...Just reinstall windows...

And also, deleting games usually doesn't help with memory usage.

At least we need more information about your PC to help you. Mostly, I think it is because of insufficient RAM and many programs running in background.

Also running Vista with less than 1GB of RAM is a bad idea. I'm quite a multi-tasking user and I still suffer with 2GB of RAM (PF disabled though).

PEBCAC is just another similar acronym and stands for Problem Exists Between Chair and Computer, there are many others which all mean pretty much the same things such as PICNIC, PIBKAC, PEBMAC, POBCAC...

Also I thought the E usually stood for Exists rather than Em, not that it really matters.
