Macs. Aren't they PCs as well?
1 Page: [ 1 ]
NO this is NOT a Macs vs. PC debate, but I want to ask you all something that's been bugging my mind lately, and it's how Apple claims that "Macs" and "PCs" are different, judging by their ads (I've never gone to Apple's website).
The first line of the Macintosh article on Wikipedia is, "Macintosh, commonly nicknamed Mac, is a brand name which covers several lines of personal computers designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc." So why does Apple advertise Macs and PC's so separately when they're exactly the same? It's like trying to juxtapose a Dell to a PC or a HP to a PC...aren't they all the same?
Now, I know Wikipedia isn't a terribly reliable resource, so I just did a quick Google search as to "What are Macs" and it seems acceptable to call macs a brand name of personal computers, or the name of their operating system. So is Apple doing this on purpose because of false advertisement or is it because they think too highly of their products? Why are they calling Macs different from PC's and it's just another PC?

Macs are different from PCs because they have different operating system in them.
I think that's all.
PC run under Windows and Mac maybe run under Leopard [correct me if I'm wrong].
I guess people differentiate them by saying "I'm using a Mac" or "I'm using a PC" just to give other people the whole idea of it.
Sorry, I've never used a Mac.
But looking at the hardware specification, they have more or less the same -- e.g. both have Bluetooth, USB ports, Optical CD drive, etc

Using a different search word on Google.

The term "Mac" serves as a differentiating selling point from typical PCs in terms of OS, hardware, etc. Since PC and Macs' softwares are not exactly compatible with each other, that also serves to differentiate Macs from PCs.
A rather simple and layman explanation. I'll leave it to the more knowledgeable for more accurate reasoning.

Well keep in mind PC's stand for Personal Computers - they're your own personal computer, so really any computer is a PC, whether it be a laptop, a desktop, hell even a cellphone is a mini-computer. We often associate PC's with desktop computers, so if that's the case shouldn't Macs, Windows, Linux all be the same regardless of their operating system? Personal computers simply mean that someone owns it and it's for their own use...
From a literal definition viewpoint, you are correct. A Mac is also a PC, which doesn't make it any different from a Dell or Acer desktop/laptop.
But from a branding perspective, it makes a lot of difference. Mac products are in a world of its own. You can't just take any non-Apple software and install it on a Mac and expect it to run (unless it is designed to be compatible with Macs). It makes sense to put in the impression that Apple's products are not just "another PC like the others". Through differentiation, you can decrease price elasticity, build up a loyal customer base as well as charge a premium on your products.
We usually associate non-Macs as PCs because we don't see them as any different from another non-Mac computer. From a consumer's perspective, they run on the same processor (Intel), they all use the same OS (Windows), any one software can run on any of them without compatibility issues, etc. We don't call a Dell Optiplex model desktop an Optiplex (or Opti) because we don't see it any differently from an Acer or HP model desktop. To go for a Mac would be to forgo the many things you could have done on a non-Mac PC. Hence, the PC/Mac divide.
You can call it subconscious name association.
PS: The title "Macs. Aren't they PCs as well?" would be a more appropriate title than "Macs vs PCs". That would avoid having to encounter people who jump in and post based on the title only.

I agree a Mac is a PC, but Its all about sales and they simply found a really good way to make their computer stand apart, because some people wouldnt even ask the question
Isint a MAC just a brand of PC?

Macs are OK, but I will always be a proud blue screen hating PC

Macs are techniquely "personal computers" and then again they are not because they are not personally put together. you dont get as many options hardware wise when you buy a mac
The meaning behind the term PC has evolved to the point where anything that doesn't run OSX is labeled as a PC.
A PC is made by any computer manufacturer and usually will install Microsoft Windows on it but it can be made to run almost any OS.
A Mac is made by Apple at the hardware and software levels. Both the machine and the OS are made and supported by Apple.
Windows will run on anything while OSX will only run on Macs because there is a piece of hardware inside of Apple computers that tells OSX that it is a legitimate Apple-made computer. There have been hacks that break this protection and allow OSX to run on PC hardware.
On the inside they are pretty much the same now. Apple recently switched all of its internal components to run on Intel CPUs. Before that they used IBM PowerPC cpus which aren't even compatible with normal PCs.

MAC is a PC.... no question about that... even wiki said so |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh
This is just my guessed but since the "old days" MAC has claimed that they computer is more stable... and they do this by limiting what you can do to the computer... ie modifying/changing the video card, etc... and even fact even if you did, the hardwares (and softwares) is made by them, so there's not a lot of unknown variabe to the stablization equation... "PC" on the other hand is more relaxed about that and you can customized it to your need... so in a way this your "personalized computer" lol... (a little joke) However, by popular demands within the last decades, MAC is starting to relax this (by lawsuit I think).
Anyway, because of the restriction, no other company can make a "MAC" so they used what's availible to them... like window, linux, solarist, etc. And MAC wanted to be condersider different from them (for marketing purposes) so they came up with the MAC vs. PC.

Mac and pc are the same, both are pc's, the only dif is how the OS installed on it works.
its like a pop can and a pop bottle lol, they both do the same thing, hold liquid, except they work dif lol, one has a top you twist off, one has a top you pop open with a tab. but you can't use parts from the one on the other lmao
bad analogy but whatever lmao

Whenever the ad came on the tv I wondered that and got annoyed. Of course thet're PCs they've just tricked people into beliving that they're not. I suppose it's a advertising thing. By saying that they're not pcs then they get the people who don't want a windows computer.
Now I'm not saying that mac and windows are the same they're not. It just annoys me when companys bend the truth that much to advertise.

If Mac is PC , so is Microsoft and Linux PCs??? PC means personal computer. If it is true, any computer can be my PC .....even a satelite 's computer system can be my PC too, agree??

The entire PC thing comes from what seems to be the general confusion of people and now misleading commercials. PC originally did mean personal computer, it no longer holds that same idea. It has now come to mean a personal computer running Windows. This is where the real difference is, in the operating system used. Mac OSX is based on the mach kernel and has "creatively stolen" many pieces of BSD. Windows is now NT based, but you are still able to see many "mutated" commands that surely came from DOS.
