I will be continuing the thread from here, as i want to make a couple points on the subject, and cannot due so due to it being locked.
@Gremi007's post: I completely agree with your aspect on the genre. I tend usually to see the difference between rap and hip hop mostly as just that, whether or not there is...
A. A definite beat and asthetic part of the song that can be listened to ALONE without listening to the lyrics.
B. If there is an actual message in the song, not just lyrics put there to satisfy the public.
Usually in this case, if B is not satisfied, A isnt either, and so i classify it as rap. Maybe i am not thinking this completely through, but i definitely see the trend in that kind of music.
On to actual artists, my favorite artists are mostly older including The Roots (Malik B, Black Thought, etc), DJ Krush, Common (only older stuff, i personally think he sold out with Universal Mind Control), Kanye West, and Mos Def.
To go onto a random side note, i think that The RZA in Afro Samurai could have done quite a bit better in the beats, and it could've used more lyrics in its fighting sections.
