Did you know that kakashi's rank before is an ANBU(ANsatsu Senjutsu Tokushu BUtai)?
Yes he used to be an ANBU before. But later on, from a higher rank(ANBU) he decided to become a jounin(lower rank) to teach Students in ninja academy.

Yh I saw some flashbacks of him as an ANBU with his pack of hounds. He apparently the only Ninja to train the hounds since they were puppies and to use them in battle or to track someone
I think that it would be very cool to see Kakashi in ANBU form for an episode or two. You have to show your cool side every now and then. Who knows, Naruto/Sakura/Sai/Sasuke might even aspire to become ANBU someday.
Yh but he left ANBU, the only way we goner see him as an NBU is in flashbacks
Just found out how he got his Sharingan eye, it was given 2 him as a gift from an Uchiha who was in his team long tym ago. The Uchiha was dying on a mission and askd a mediacal ninja to replace Kakashi's damaged eye with one of his Sharingan

True. ANBU isn't actually a rank, it's kind of like a job you can apply for. Much like the Hunter-nin class (I can't remember the Japanese word for it. x-x). But I believe you have to be at least a special jounin before you can apply for the ANBU.
And the ANBU also performed more espionage than the regular ranks of ninja within the Naruto world. That's how the Hokage gathers information are ANBU scouts and such. I think they also perform emergency rescues.

That would be Oinin ^_^. Actually, ANBU isn't a job, but a group of powerful jounin used for assassination missions. Like Glitterglam stated, ANBU is short for (Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai) which means "Special Assassination Tactics Unit."
If you are going based on ranks, then you'd have to say Chuunin, as ANBU are still Jounin regardless of their missions ^_^.

It's true. Maybe you remember before Sasuke left Konoha Kakashi had talked with him.

Kakashi: That would work, however... Unfortunately, for me no such person exists. Those people have already been killed.
All of his ANBU friends were killed that's why he left ANBU. And maybe he didn't wanted to be alone...

anyway at the moment kakashi is an elite jounin. And he has made an anbu appearance in a flashback in the first naruto movie (the one with the snow princess etc)
