Notice that Kakashi used his Mangekyou Sharingan when he got near Pain (at the point he signaled "Now!"; or maybe I'm just mistaken with the image). Maybe he used it's Genjutsu ability which we have never seen yet (just like Itachi's powerful Tsukuyomi). Also, notice that his eyes got worn out after his thrust of Raikiri to the other Pain. As proven by his fight with Jiraiya, Pain is weak with genjutsu (although putting visual genjutsu on one Pain body might not have an effect because he has other bodies, eyes and minds that can dispel genjutsu to other bodies; or otherwise may be the case, might be that you can put individual genjutsu on each body just like the three bodies of Pain who fought with Jiraiya was insulatedly affected while the other three were not; perhaps the answer to this question lies in mind probe of Ino's father).
Another point of view is that Kakashi has the habit of using his words as distraction to his opponents (just like his fight with Momochi Zabuza). He may have deceived Pain by what he said "I've got half of my chakra left" or something like that.

Very doubtful, he needed a team of people for his plans, failed with even that. And if he does kill this Pain off, there would still be four more to go.

No he's most likely dead... but i hope he's alive.
He's definitely not dead yet. Tite will at least give him an Obito/Rin flashback chapter before he kills him and even then I don't think he'll die. Tsunade's slugs are running around healing people, and better yet, I think Tite has something awesome for him in store: you know chiyo's life-for-a-life jutsu? Kakashi was watching that with his SHARINGAN, therefore, I believe he will die saving someone important, like Naruto or Sakura.
So no, I'm pretty sure we've still got our perverted, masked friend for a good half a year or so. Besides, if Pain killed Jiraya AND Kakashi I might find Tite and tipex out every pic of Pain he's ever drawn
