I haven't been following too closely, but I know Kakashi has pretty much the highest stats in the village so if anyone can stand up to Pein, it's him. If he does lose, though, it only makes sense, as it brings the Obito-Rin-Yondaime-Kakashi cycle to a close. Kakashi's rather miserable anyway, and I think he'd be more than happy to sacrifice his life in defense of the village.

I don't think Kakashi will die as Jiraiya is already the catalyst for Naruto to defeat Pain, so why kill off Kakashi, a very popular character? It seems like Kishimoto is toying with us now that Chouza is found to of survived his attack. Like others have said, I think that if Kakashi does die at some point in the series, it will be protecting Naruto in some way.
As I said before, Kakashi is a very popular character; coming in 1st in the Weekly Shounen Jump popularity polls a few times. To kill him off in such a fashion so carelessly would be to risk losing sales from those who find Kakashi to be the best character of the series. There have to be a lot if you place 1st in popularity in a series as popular as Naruto is.

It looks like he's dead. But that's the way manga are most of the time. It'll end up that he's probably just very badly injured but will survive. But the fight was good and I'm really surprised how strong Pain really is. Hope to see Naruto get to beat the crap out of Pain.

I think killing of Kakashi at this point would seem a bit gregarious. Naruto is already motivated by the death of Jiraiya, and killing Kakashi would seem like a last ditch effort to add full to an already raging fire.
Naruto would grow all nine tails and obliberate the entire countries, friends and foes and enemies... to dust...
