Mythology
My english class had finished our study on mythology. and i have to say some mythological beliefs are somewhat unbelievable. from Zeus's father [i forgot the name] swallowing his own chidren to the fates controlling human lives with strings.
anyways besides all that i really find it to be a really interesting subject. with its own theories on how the things today had come to be, like "echoing"
maybe theres some truth behind the stories since it had to have probably started somewhere somehow. do you think it has some truth? what do you all think about mythology?

Hey, myths = fairy tails. I don't believe it. But, like Zeus, he is a god in some religion for some groups of people. So, there are people out there who believes in these myths.
Myths are just attemts to explain thing/phänomens people didn`t understand at the time they were created. So you could say that there`s some "truth" in them, like some people that are in myths could actually had exist, but they where no gods or monsters or something like that. They where probably just people who knew how to manipulate/fool others or in the case of monsters humans/animels with diseases/deformations!
Still I really like myths with all the gods, monsters and their powers. I mean who wouldn`t like to have such powers! B)My favourite myth-creatures are the dragon and the phönix!

Right... myths mean that they are false or hard to believe, however, when they said the story about zeus eating his kids... no one is to say that the translation (perhaps from greek to something to something else, then english?) might have messed up the story to what it was meant to be. Anyway, I love mythology, they always have some kind of meaning in the stories, whether they happened or not. Congrats for taking that class!

While there can be some truth behind myths, it's not like they're meant to be purely factual. However, there's usually a meaning behind them, in pretty much the same sense as there's a meaning behind other stories. If you look at them in a more abstract way, they teach you about morality, right and wrong, etc... They also try to fill the same void as many religions do; What's the purpose of life? Why do things happen? Where do we come from? etc.
Concerning mythological creatures, it's possible that the creatures depicted in the stories are based on something that exists or have existed. In other words, either an exaggeration of something, or... Science totally missed something. :P

I just saw a program on the Science Channel about how certain mythological creatures may have been created from interpretations of fossil discoveries. Very interesting.
I think many myths have a basis in fact. Tales of powerful and influential and interesting people that grew with each telling, becoming more and more fantastic as storytellers added their own elements.
Some are simply extrapolations of things that people saw. They came up with explanations and, again, wove amazing tales from their imagination. Everybody loves a good story.
Real or not, I've always liked "myths" I'd love to live in a time of multiple Gods and mythical creatures. As long as Zeus doesn't strike me down and I don't look at Medusa that is.
I think mythology is just a big pile of bull crap. There never were any gods and minor gods. There never were centaurs, or minotaurs or anything like that. The only real thing were giants, but anyway like YouSoWild said I agree. Myths are fairy tales and are nothing more than that.
OK you guys are forgetting that these "myths" (which I believe the term Greek Mythology is politically incorrect) were ONCE a RELGION... They're funny and not believable to you, but a higher power blowing life into a bunch of sand or clay is believable? To each their own. Myths derive from true facts that have been blown up a bit over generations.. I need not say more...
Myths are pretty much un-real. God? maybe, those things actually happening? impossible. It's all about science nowaday. Myths are just BS.
Myths arent bs . they are allegories . we should learn from them.
Some myths are completely outrageous.
I've heard two versions on how Zeus got Hera...one, he turned himself into a bull to seduce Hera (and it worked), and the other he turned himself into a pigeon frozen in the snow to appeal to her nurturing side, and when she rescued him he turned back into his normal self and took advantage of her.
The Greeks had pretty wild imaginations.

I think myths can sorta be divided into 3 categories.. :P
--there are the ones that are basically stories that explain the "unexplainable".. how life was created, how the wind blows, how the earth was made, the creation of animals the seasons etc...
--then there are the ones that are EXTREMELY elaborate stories that were once based on a true happening. such as santa claus is based on a real person, but goodness knows that he didn't go down every chimney on the planet in one night ;P
--and then there are the myths and stories that you learn from. like 'don't piss off the gods', 'be kind to thy neighbor', etc etc.. ^_^
..hm.. tho it seems like there are many myths for different areas, religions, people, timeperiods that all include a type of flood! ((like noah... but i totally don't remember them O.o it was a couple years ago that i studied that... but it's neat to learn the many similarities you can find like that))
but either way, i love reading about myths and the religions of different timeperiods and people.. super fun and interesting

Once again you guys keep terming it Greek "Mythology" You all do realize this was once their religion right? It's a dead relgion thats all...
Though they probably never happened, it is good to point out that a lot of cultures have striking similarities in their mythology. For instance, in Egpyt you had the myth of Set (god of evil and chaos, basically) fighting Horus (god of order and good) for 7 years after Set threw sand in the eyes of Horus, while far far away the Norse had the myth of Loki (god of mischief and chaos) fighting Baulder (god of compassion, essentially, and idea seemingly forgein to Norse mythology) where Loki kills Baulder by throwing sand in his eyes. It is unlikely that these cultures had any contact, but the stories are, again, strikingly similar. Jung anyone? 0_0
