I've been reading this book 'The Serial Killer Files' by Harold Schechter. It came to my surprise that the amount of serial killers all around the globe is a lot more than I thought. I'm in Indonesia where the word 'serial killers' can only be found in movies, but recently I have this feeling that what appears above doesn't always represent what hidden below. It's a sad fact that some of this 'degenerate individuals' are living among us. The society in this 21st century is becoming more fertile ground for the sprouts of degenerate minds to grow. What do you think?

Well, the world is changing... maybe in the past weren't so many serial killer but every time when i hear a news about them i just get more scared... who wouldn't be? actually i guess there is no place in this world where you can't find one killer... in my country i heard a lot about them, one was from my own city and that time i was so scared that nothing could have made me feel better...

serial killers are everywhere and its a shame because sometimes you dont even know the person who killed you, they killed you probaly because they where angry or just had issues they couldnt control.
everytime i hear on the news someone in england gets killed(which is actually more often then you would expect) i would get scared even if it was no where near me.i dont even like the idea of walking home or too school, scary ... ne?

The book says deeper reasons behind the motive of the killer. Some are really twisted, yeah. Like sexual drive, or even for just pleasure. And here I thought the things in MPD Psycho are just fiction. And yes, one scary thing about them is that they look not like a killer at all.

You are more liekly to be killed by someone you know intimately like a spouse then you are a true serial killer. That said being on guard is important. Dont pick up hitchhikers even if they are girls, dont fall for people with broken legs or arms needing help and never go near a van or into someones house you dont know. Dont walk the streets alone near the road where they can grab you as they go down the street and if you are at a hotel dont wander around near the doors where they can easily open the doors and grab you. It is not just the serial killers you have to fear but rapists and regular everyday murderers. In other words always be aware of your surrondings and dont be cought off guard by a situation that internally raises a caution flag. If you feel uncomfortable-leave. Serial killers dont typically get caught-they age out. This means that even with our technology, we are still unable to catch them because they know how to get around without drawing much attention and know easy targets when they see them. This is why they usually travel main roads through the countries because it is easy to pick up someone and deposit their body along the way and there are plenty of homeless, helpless or prostitutes to grab in every town. Oh yea--be leary also of a kid you dont know or a lady wanting you to help them because serial killers have gotten smarter and often have accomplices to help them get victims that are all too willing to be helpful.

Well, I did a report on Serial killers and 19% of them are women o.O But, there are alot of them out there, more than we can count. But they'll all undercover, so they can kill again. I think the police should hunt them down until their last breath until they get these killers D<. Killing is bad, yo.

When you say there are more of them out there now then "before"; is that more as in more per total population (percentage) ... you have to figure as you go back in history the total world population gets smaller... significantly smaller before 1800...

my thinking is that it just "seems" like there are more because 1)there are more and more people on the earth then ever before in history and 2) the media has also saturated our lives more than at any time in the past... and 2a)the media is worldwide and instantanious today (meaning we hear about events on the other side of the world almost as they are happening)

I think those two factors make people think there are more killers then "before".
same goes for natural disasters... you have to figure a few undred years ago the storms were still happening there just wasn't a eorld wide media there to see it and report it to the rest of the world instantly. and there weren't [hardly any] people living in the areas that typically get hit by storms...

I think the 21st centuary is ripe ground for serial killings, because the challenges have gotten harder and some people in their twisted minds love this idea. Whenever I read a book involving complex serial murders I always hope it isn't encouraging some raving lunitic to give it a try.

I'd blame the media, I mean, in the movies an TV the "cool" guy is the one with the gun. I used to read a lot about serial killers when I was around 15. I found that I was born the same day John Wayne Gacy was born. ^_^

You also need to a have a obsession with the type of person you are killing hair color, eye color or body type and is your souvenier going to be physical like a lock of hair or are you going to eat part of your victim to consume thier soul as well??

Yes, that right. Just killing alot of people makes you a mass murderer. Though a serial killer is a form of a mass murderer.

I definitely hate seeing people die, but it would be interesting if we finally had a serial killer like in the movies, who wore some freaky mask and could not be identified. Or maybe it has already happened, since the movies' characters seem to cover those things up a lot. But yeah, I cannot believe people are able to hook up as often as they do with some real whackos out there.

Its just like violence, we as human beings are being dissensitized by television about the growing violence in the world that people now are too scared to come out of their houses, fearing that their children might get killed or sucked into the majority, but have we ever looked inside peoples homes lately? sometimes its just one spark that can set off a whole chain of events just in a blink of an eye. Serial killers are just the tip of the iceberg, there are far more worst people out there than you can imagine...Like fundamentalists, cowboys, genociders... heck it could even be your next door neighbor!

Think about it, The root of all evil doesnt usual come from bad people... it can be normal people like us too.
