Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto?) is a manga series created in Japan by two Japanese manga artists, the writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. The series primarily centers around a high school student who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it.

Death Note was first serialized by Shueisha in the Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from the first issue in December 2003 to May 2006, with 108 chapters in total. The series has been published in its entirety in 12 tankōbon volumes in Japan and in North America. The series has been adapted into a pair of live-action films released in Japan on June 17, 2006 and November 3, 2006 respectively, and an anime series which aired in Japan from October 3, 2006 to June 26, 2007. Also, a novelization of the series, written by light novelist Ishin Nishio, was released in Japan on August 1, 2006.

Light Yagami is an extremely intelligent young man who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgment on criminals.

Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" (derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a game of psychological cat and mouse between the two begins.

Light Yagami (Kira) (夜神 月, Yagami Raito)
The protagonist of Death Note, Light is an extremely intelligent but bored 17-year old student. When he finds the Death Note, dropped in the human world by Ryuk, he decides to use it to kill all criminals and earns the title Kira. His ultimate goal is to cleanse the world of evil to create a utopia and then reign over this new world as its God. He calls himself Justice.

L (エル, Eru)
L is the world's three top-rated detectives (through two additional aliases), tasked with tracking down and arresting Kira. As such, he is Light's arch-enemy. His disheveled appearance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. L has many quirks, such as sitting in an odd manner (he squats on the edge of his seat, with his knees up by his chin), snacking on sweets in the middle of meetings, and holding his cellphone and other objects in a peculiar manner. He often takes drastic strategies to confuse and force his opponents, and on several occasions he has willingly disclosed several of his weaknesses to Kira at the risk of his own life in the hopes that he would lure him into a trap.

Misa Amane (弥 海砂, Amane Misa)
A girl with an immense crush on Kira, Misa is a popular idol in Japan, and tends to wear clothing in many different styles, depending on what she is doing. She is immature and tends to refer to herself in the third person in an attempt to be cute. Misa is completely devoted to Light, and she once said that she loved him at first sight. Light, however, only views her as an asset to his plans because of her Death Note and her Shinigami eyes (that she obtained at the cost of half of her remaining life span, twice). The murderer of Misa's parents had been punished by Kira, explaining her later devotion to him.

Mello (メロ, Mero)
Mello was an orphan who grew up with Near in Watari's shelter for gifted children. Like Near, Mello was one of the candidates to become L's successor. Similar to L's fondness for sweets, he is often seen eating bars of chocolate. Although Mello is quite intelligent, he often lets his emotions get the better of him. Mello wears leather most of the time, unlike Near or L. He also appears to be less secluded in terms of his friends and hobbies, and seems to be fond of biking. When Mello is first released - Light tries to find and kill him, which he manages to escape - but due to an explosion, he is left with a scar over the left side of his face.

Near (ニア, Nia)
Near was a primary candidate to become L's successor and calls himself and during the course of his investigations. He shares a number of similarities with L. Much like how L plays with things such as sugar cubes and forks, Near is frequently shown playing with toys or his hair. Near also sits in an unusual manner similar to L, but with some slight differences. He offered to join forces with Mello to fight Kira, but Mello turned him down. Near then gained the support of the US government and formed the Secret Provision for Kira (SPK).

Teru Mikami (魅上 照, Mikami Teru)
Mikami is selected as the fourth Kira by Light, after Light decides that it is too dangerous for the Death Note to be near Misa or himself, since he and Misa are currently under surveillance by Aizawa and Mogi. A prosecuting attorney and adamant supporter of Kira, Mikami shares many of the same ideals, thoughts, and priorities as Kira, and is ecstatic when he discovers that Kira, his God, has chosen him, proving that God is on his side and watching. He is completely devoted and loyal to Kira, believing that divine justice must be brought down upon the people. Little is known about his personal life; he appears to have no hobbies or anything else of the sort. He chants "delete" with each name he writes down in the Death Note due to events in his past when he thought God was "deleting" the evil people in his life. He, like Misa, has made the exchange of half his remaining years for Shinigami eyes.

Shinigami (The Death Gods)

Ryuk (リューク, Ryūku)
The original shinigami who dropped the Death Note in the human world, which Light would pick up. Acting out of pure boredom, Ryuk begins the story of Death Note on a whim. It is stated that Ryuk found the second Death Note in the shinigami world. Ryuk is not Light's ally, and in fact declares in their first meeting that some day he (Ryuk) would write Light's name into his own Death Note, killing him. Ryuk often refuses to aid Light and instead enjoys watching him struggle for his goal. He acts for his own interests and entertainment, and often fails to tell Light key details about the Death Note. However, Ryuk will aid Light if it serves his own goals, such as providing amusement or obtaining apples, without which he suffers a form of withdrawal symptoms.

Rem (レム, Remu)
The female shinigami who first gives Misa her Death Note and Shinigami eyes. Similar to Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes; however, she purposely gives one of them to Misa Amane. Rem inherited her second Death Note from Jealous, another shinigami who died when he saved Misa's life, and thought it only right to pass it on to Misa. Oddly enough, Rem inherits Jealous' love for Misa as well and is prompt to defend Misa even at the cost of her life. She shows this when she openly shows her lack of trust for Light, stating that she will kill him if Misa dies before her time.

Written rules

Before the series begins, Ryuk writes instructions in English inside his Death Note with the belief that English is the most popular language in the human world.

* The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
* This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
* If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
* If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack.
* After writing the cause of death, the details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Fake rules

These rules were written in the Death Note to aid Light in a scheme he came up with to clear his and Misa's names. They were written by Ryuk but are completely false.

* If the owner of a Death Note does not use the notebook after 13 days time, he/she will die.
* If the Death Note is burned, torn up, or otherwise rendered useless, any people who have touched the Death Note will die.

Other rules

Throughout the series, other rules are revealed, such as "When the same name is written on more than one Death Note, the Note which was first filled in will take effect, regardless of the time of death." This rule played an important role in the movie, as L used this rule to prevent Kira from killing him. A few of them match the rules Ryuk wrote inside the Death Note, but most of them are rules that are not known by humans and in some cases, even the Shinigami. These rules are revealed at the end of certain chapters in the volume format of Death Note and the beginning of the Jump format chapters, on black pages that contain only the rules.

In the eyecatches of the last chapter/episode (then, the two last eyecatches of the series), the "rules" revealed are not Death Note rules, but the rules of life itself, as it says:

- All humans will, without exception, eventually die.

- After they die, the place they go is Mu. (Nothingness)

Both rules are central to the chapter/episode, as it remembers that even Light, self-proclaimed "God", will die one day as all humans.

Shinigami and Death Notes

A Shinigami must own at least one Death Note. That Death Note may also be used and owned by a human, but only if the Death Note falls to earth and is found by a human. The Shinigami have to keep using the Death Note to kill people in order to extend their own lives.

A pact exists between the human owner and the Shinigami who gave the human the Death Note. The pact is such that at the end of the owner's life, the Shinigami has to write down the owner's name in his own note.

How to kill a Shinigami

Rem is one of the few Death gods to discover how to kill a Shinigami. If a Shinigami uses the Death Note to extend the life of a human they care about, they will die since they have failed in their eternal mission of shortening human lives. This was stated by Rem when she claims she would kill L for Light; she initially states that it would make no difference as it was to protect Light, who she did not particularly care for. However, since she then had such an attachment to Misa (who would inevitably die if L wasn't killed), she would die. Rem reveals this to Misa, who later reveals it to Light and Ryuk.

A Shinigami could end up killing itself as well, if it neglects to continue filling its Note with the names of humans. If it fails to do this then it will cease to lengthen its lifespan, and eventually run out completely.

A Shinigami may be killed by execution as well, in the Shinigami Realm. If a Shinigami breaks the laws of the Shinigami Realm, it is subject to one of nine levels of punishment, starting with level eight at the lowest infraction, going up to level one, and then the "Extreme" level. If a Shinigami is subjected to levels three or above, it will die after it is finished being punished. This is why Shidoh stops himself from telling Mello where the other Death Note is, after reading this rule in the scrolls he was given for his mission to retrieve his own Death Note.

Finally, a Death Note thread. I was wondering why no one started this thread sooner.

Anyway, I loved the anime. The manga was just as enjoyable. I preferred the dialog of the manga more because it was more elaborate and I learned more about the characters personalities than I did in the anime. However, the anime was just as intense (if not more) as the manga. I also liked the ending of the anime more than the manga's. I guess cuz' Light managed to live longer and he died in a more suitable, memorable way.

My favorite character has to be... Melo. I just love his unorthodox method of thinking.
Also, the fact that he rides a Motorcycle just makes him even cooler (and he has a better sense of fashion than any of the other characters).


But I have yet to watch the movie/film of Death Note. Some of my friends said they enjoyed it and that makes me even more interested in it. Sadly, I just don't have the time since I am drowning in a great deal of schoolwork from college and I spend most of my free time resting from all the work (after all, college is exhausting).

I found it to be a bit too shounen for my taste.
But then I have only watched up to episode 10 or to the point where Light and L were basically dragged onto the same screen at the same time at their school just to please the many yaoi fangirls.

And then I decided to call it quits.

was intense.

L was my favourite character he was so composed and intelligent ( I wish I could do that) while still maintaning an outwardly cool and humouress attitude was amazing.

Light was a close second, he was the perfect anti-hero in every sense of the word. Although his ultimate goal seemed admirable the means by wich he sort to achieve it slowly become more detestable I guess it was the whole "ends justifies the means" thing.

Without a doubt one of my favourite series the sheer supense was amazing and the memorable line "JUST AS PLANNED" was brilliant

Death Note is a really really good series. I know people don't like the second story arc as much as the first, but nevertheless the manga and show just rule. I love how its basically a big chess game.

Yess...i agree with that..basically it's a big chess game...but the wonder starts when the "shinigami and things" appeared, with the "unique" detectives...

well...that's a good story and manga i think..

I saw the game actually as a game of mafia (the card game) as L "the detective" is tryin to find the killer "Kira" and because of the concept, it was one of the main reasons i was enjoying the anime

every episode just made you want to see what happens next!

To be honest, i liked death note yet hated it as well, if tat makes sense..anywho, in the beginning it looks really real and indeed very interesting, however, when it gets to a point when everything just keep repeating, like, how light wanna kill l and l wanna kill light, it is really annoying that the whole series is just about how a smarter person wins, anyway its just my personal opinion, but, i do think, it deserves to be the top 50, maybe its just not my type ~*

Ok this is a little paradox IMO. When i finnished the anime i had one sentence to say and i can explain in further detail... but that would take me a long time cause there are so many things that i can point out about the anime as just a story, and as a story with themes and morals....

Woah Death Note is one cool anime its really awesome that the protagonist in the series is doing all of the bad stuff and its all battle of the brains to getting Kira caught. I especially like L even though his quite weird some times
