Probably manually or by Photoshop.
Whichever it is, I like them >_<
Btw, who's the guy with wings?

Well thanks guys! We made them by setting a camera on long-exposure on a tripod. You click the button to open the shutter, draw the image you want with lights in the air, then release button to close shutter. Needless to say, it generally requires dark environments so as to not overexpose the camera, but this angel one turned out well despite being in brightness! The guy in the angel photo was a friend of mine; I drew his wings with the flashlight. I'll post some more I did on an earlier date:

Most good cameras have a setting you can select that keeps the shutter open for as long as you hold the button down. So you mount the camera on a tripod, then aim it at the desired scene, then hold the shutter button down and draw the picture in the air with flashlights, phones, LED's, etc. When finished you release the shutter button.
Hmm...the very last one is soo cool! How'd you do that?
Wow. never thought of doing something like this. I've tried something like this, but with a fixed light source and by moving the camera around (lame i know), but man, is this good. :) I love the one with the tree. It makes me want to try this tonight :D have you guys ever done things with led throwies? I bet you guys and your creativity would come up with something crazy.

I think we did that one by having two people go far out in a field and run towards the camera, waving the lights in circles.
We haven't succeeded with LED's yet since they seem to be too dim to expose the film enough. I'm interested in finding some nice bright ones, though, since LED's come in some very cool colors. It's hard to get flashlights in colors.
