It's about several things.
It revolves around 3 girls schools and how they interact with eachother. It revolves around relationships between the girls- two main relationships in particular. It deals with politics between the schools and what they make the students do. And the series seems to have a theme of unrequited love.
I think most people who watch the series like all the angst and intrigue in the romantic relationships. That's why I love it!

Mmhmm. There are absolutely no guys in this series. Which is a big plus for me.. lol. It is fabulous.
AnimeYume sums it up nicely here: "Its basically about 12 girls who love each other TOO MUCH! If you love yuri anime youll get an over dose with this one!" hehehe

Well, to give more info... The setting is a secluded private all girl school catholic-like campus. It seems that there are 3 sections or schools to this huge campus. Each section has a unique uniform and school tradition/beliefs. The main story is really mostly about school life and relationships between girls with other girls ranging from friendship to love. There are no males characters in this show or any mentions of male characters. There are yuri fan-service in this show that ranges from kissing to further...

Yeah, I agree with you. Whereas you yawn constantly while watching Maria-sama, and are bored a lot of the time waiting for a plot turn- Strawberry Panic has them jammed in every little corner.
To be fair- I have not finished Maria-sama. After watching the first several episodes, it quickly dropped to the bottom of my list.

They shove a lot of lesbian kissing scenes, angst, implied sex (not to mention a lot of actual breast groping) and attempted rape all throughout the series. "Fan service" means they do that stuff to keep the yuri fans interested. And Yuri, of course roughly means lesbian.
