Made pretty much everything with defaults from PS (Pen tool)
The white space serves as an area to place your icons/shortcuts, so yeah, it doesn't look THAT empty afterwards.
The signature will no longer be visible due to the taskbar.
What do you think? Should i keep those slight ammounts of texture?

I like it, good idea on leaving the left empty, did you use a texture by any chance on the BG? I think a few areas there need to be erased, where the 3 lines are together, and the cyan like color line has some big spots IMO. Also those three lines just end right away, might need for them to go behind the focal(Render). I like what you have so far, good flow, use of shapes and okay pen tooling. The next and last thing I will point out is the button, needs to be placed somewhere else or removed, Keep It Up... LATEZ~ (^_-)b
Yep, there is a bit of texture there. Thinking about it, i should erase it, since it looks too much like dirt.
I'll just erase those 3 lines that you mentioned, or make them look better.
The only thing that i'm not willing to change is the location of the button, actually i like it there, anywhere else would look off or distractive.

You can not assume people have a lot of icons on their desktop to make up for the white space. I am all for wallpapers that are not busy but the white space really stands out. A wallpaper is scene as a work of art. Even if you add icons along the left side, the white will contrast with the color of the icons distracting the viewer from the character.
Maybe you could extend your design pattern a bit more to the left or add a light background pattern.

I like it, it's a very particulary idea.. well done!
Instead of white, I'd go with an off-white or gray, with maybe a pattern or texture to give some variety. Pure white as a bg burns my eyes. >.< Looks good so far though. :)

I don't know if other poeple see it but it looks like there is a lot of jaggy edges around the character and also some around the lines you put on top.
The button is fine where it's placed but I would recommend to change the color theme a little bit cause it's not matching the original scan... It looks too new age for the style of the character.
