Game genres
There are many different types of games out there; rpgs, action, first-person shooters, strategy, sports, fighting, adventure, etc. Each focusing on what they think players want, but there are rarely players that like every single type of game that is being released.
In this topic, I would like to know which types of games do you like and dislike? What genre floats your boat? And give a few reasons for your choices, tell us why do you think some are better than others?

I have always been fascinated with rpgs. A great story that revolves around an adventurer that travels for whatever reason training his mind and body through different experiences. Most of the things we encounter in rpgs can never happen in real life, I cant simply ignore all my daily duties and just walk out of the door looking for some kind of adventure. An adventure in our world is much more complicated and much harder to maintain than that of the world in a game. For me, playing different rpg games is like living many different lives from which I can experience things that I cannot in my own life.
The types of games I find least attractive are music games (such as guitar hero) and sport games. I cant say that I don't enjoy a good song, but a game pretending that I can play an instrument... I just don't see a point in it. I mean I would love it if I could play at least one instrument, but I would prefer it to be a real one. As for sport games, I always thought that if I want to play some kind of sport I should do it in reality not inside a video game. That way there would be some kind of benefit.

I like RPGs in general especially ones with mixed action, fantasy, with a bit of love story elements hehe, it makes me want to play and finish the game, the characters and storyline makes you feel that the whole storyline of the game is your story. It is very satisfying after finishing it. Plus you get the ability to develop your character and it's more than satisfying to me. I like playing online RPGs games as well and I find that it is usually somewhat more cooperative, while online shooters are competitive, with the exception of your team. You can take your time learning your way around rather than run to a spawn point, grab the BFG and sneak off to a good vantage point. Single player shooters are a little more fun for beginners, it was loads of fun for me. But if you get killed, it's only your own fault and not because you were out witted by a regular group who plays continuously.
Even in a Player Vs. Player RPG, most of the time you will see your attacker rather than seeing your health disappear and seeing 'Noob1 has been killed by CyberAceSniper666' scrolling by while you re-spawn. Although a tag like that long one would get you spotted and targeted pretty much anywhere you try to hide. I've learned to stick to short names because of that so I would advise anyone to do the same so to avoid sticking out around corners, trees, rocks and other concealment and cover. The best thing I like about shooters is that when you finally get your skill up and know the zones, you can have a great time being an ass to people you don't know hehe. I like all genres of games but my favorite is RPG's because it has more of an impact and It also helps to alleviate stress sometimes!

I have never thought about the name length you mentioned for shooter games. I usually use fairly short names so I never noticed it. Yeah I can relate to being shot by who knows who as soon as I re spawn, was really frustrating at times specially when it happens many times in a row. But even so I enjoy playing online against real people more because in the end they make mistakes that causes them to loose to me. Unlike NPCs who hold back according to the difficulty level you set. Like you said once playing a bit and learning the maps can lead to much more enjoyment from shooting games.
It depends a lot on my mood and if I have company or not. If I have company, I prefer to play online, fighting and such games that two or more players can play. If I am alone, that too depends on my mood, I can play action games, but the only genre that is really closest to my heart is actually rpgs. Just like you explained, a great story that revolves around an adventurer that travels for whatever reason, I become very amazed by the different kinds of places in a huge world with several quests to explore, information to reveal, meet new characters, and so unfolds the story step by step till you come to the core of a problem and you then come up with a great strategy to destroy the evil and bring peace to the world ^^ And of course, a lot of events take place, most of them events that never happen in reality, but I associate a lot of things from such stories with my own life, like, I see my own life as an adventure, and whenever I have spare time I always look for new adventures ^^, usually not when I have a day off or so, because I rather take it easy and relax, but during summer for instance when I have about months of spare time hehe, to work, travel, meet new people, do different kind of staff ... and there are always a lot of things to learn from rpgs, about life, if you don't just see an rpg as a game but as something more, and that is what I love the most, the beautiful story behind the events, music and actions.

My favourite is probably the strategy genre, in particular games with war themes. I grew up playing turn-based panzer general games on my old PC and titles from strategic sims. I can't for the love of me get to grips with really fast-paced ones though, like Company of Heroes; it took A LOT of practise just to get me through the two campaigns. But still, great game :)
One genre I do dislike is simply puzzle games, mainly because i'm absolutely terrible at them.

Well for me when i play i play the games that are in my mood...For example wehn I'm angry i tend to play very violent games like Resident evil and Gears of war 2...but when I'm sad i like to play adv. games with good theme music and a really good ending... But recently i have been buying more Strategy games to keep my mind active like Warhammer for the PSP and many others.
Well, yeah. I've always been an RPG guy. The story is the most important part of the game to me. Then when you narrow it down more, there are action based RPGs and strategy based RPGs, and so on... It kind of depends on what mood I'm in; action is fast based, strategy requires more thought. Both are equally enjoyable.
The only thing I can say is that I've never really been an FPS person. Not sure why, it just doesn't hold very much appeal to me.

Stealth, F.P.S. (Usually tactical shooters) , R.T.S., Strategy games, and Fighting games are more of my style. In actuality, I'd play anything thrown at me as long as it's not bad. I've yet to play the "better" R.P.G.s of our time though, I've only gotten to play R.O. and a few other titles; grinding is obviously tedious and late nights took it's toll on me.
akihikosama, you mentioned not being a big fan of music and sports games right? Well, you're not the only one; I'm not a big fan of those either, not because I'm bad at it but also, because people should experience the real thing as well but, there is a reason why these games still exist, you've got to admit, it's easier to learn G.H. rather than an actual guitar and as for sports games, well, you can't play basket ball in a plane or car right?
Lelouch-0, are you talking about strategic command? I loved the game although, I wasn't really able to play it much; I only finished until the 3rd or 4th level until I had to return the PSP to my friend.

Yup yup .. well i also agree on the GH thing y dont poeple just go buy a guitar and learn for them self that waht i did. and sport games are so lame that also incluedes some racing games that need to die like need for speed
At first I didn't reply to this thread because I thought it was just a listfest and I assumed the admins would lock it up real fast but I guess not...
Racing simulators and first-person shooters are my top choices. I found out just recently that the games I mostly play are games where the graphics are constantly moving (ie. when you're driving the environment is moving, when you're running through alleys in FPS the walls are constantly moving really fast). I just found out that that's one major attraction I have to games, and it explains why I don't find any interest in RPG and RTS games anymore. I don't like games where it's very text-heavy and I prefer games where you can just jump right in to play it; you shouldn't have to read the instruction manual to know how to play it.
Racing sims ftw.

I love RPG, esp action RPG. I have a lot of fun playing it. The reasons why I like RPG are because there are many secrets item in it, most of them have a good story, I love the fight scene, and some of RPGs help me on learning English
Depends what I feel like. Overall I guess RPG's, but that term can be applied to almost anything.
Lately I just want mindless shooting or fighting games, but also the simplicity of a puzzle game. I've gotten sick of games with too much, or even any, dialogue and/or storyline. Perhaps I have become too impatient with a real desire to just get straight into the game? RPG's can be brilliant without/with a small amount of dialogue and sometimes better. Tis why I love SotC

@ Tifa, I tried looking for adventure in life as well, but with my repetitive lifestyle it became really hard.
@ Onimkron, Puzzles are not my think either so I know what you mean. I used to love strategy games like Command and Conquer and Age of Empires, but for some reason they seem way to repetitive when playing against the computer.
@ Geeko, those are probably shooting games. I’m surprised you said that Tomb raider in not a thinking game, when I used to play the earlier ps1 ones I used to always get stuck in different places.
@ Lulu, I know what you mean, I let off my steam on COD4. Really helps in hard times of life.
@ FloridVulpine, I never separated rpgs in different categories, liked all of the ones I played.
@ Drifting-Ashore, have not really thought about them not being available. You make a really good point there, that’s what I like to see in this thread.
@ Longbow, the difference between list topics and discussion topics is “what?” and “why?” In my topic I asked for a reason because I am interested in the support different game genres can have. I used to love racing games like and fighting games too, but for some reason went back to rpgs. Kind of funny since it’s the other way for you.
@ Lizzorette, to get better at a language is probably the greatest reason I have ever heard for playinh a video game. I hope it works for you.
@ Picori, You must have some busy lifestyle. From personal experience when I deal with many people in a given day, by the time I get home it is really difficult to get into other stories, but fortunately it doesn’t happen for me. It’s true that rpg has been used to describe vide variety of games, but the ones I had in mind are closer to the types like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

Well, I'm not really good in video games but, I seem to be better when I don't use my emotions. Anger usually leads to me getting killed.
