What´s needed to be a good player?

A lot of people can say that they are good players but... does everybody is agree about what is needed to be a good player?
Dedication, and intelect.
I agree with KaneNash, nothing beats dedication but always remember that no matter how good you are in a certain game there is always somebody out there who's better than you.
Practice, perseverance, motivation, morale, fun, and a good computer, or else the slow frame rates in Crysis will get you killed over and over again
A general understanding of things could be helpful, along with the determination to better yourself at a skill/game
there's always a challenge out there

I think that it's different for everybody when it comes to different games, because there are different types of games. If you play games like final fantasy you then have to be well structured, motivated, organized, etc.
Games such as guilty gear that only include battles perhaps fit somebody that is efficient, quickly etc.
I think though that if you have played all kinds of games you then become better and better every time you play so, practice makes perfect as they say.

Great hand-eye coordination can never hurt. Having a well organized logical mind is always useful also, especially in strategy related games. Be able to spend an ungodly amount of time, because to master anything takes awhile. Also, keep it fun and sometimes take a break from a game, otherwise it can become a beating.

Probably patience, willingness to get better at the game, luck and also natural skill. Basically, the same with almost anything. But if you're playing online then probably good sportsmanship is important in the sense that don't throw a tantrum if you get owned by other people, and don't insult noobs just because they're noobs and suck, although it doesn't help you become amazing at playing, it is needed if you want to be able to play with others. As no one would play with you if you're an ass, unless you're just uberly amazing... if you can become that good...

In my opinion anyone can be a good player if they gain what is required. After playing for so long in tournaments and such i think i should know what is required from experience. Quick thinking, experience is a big factor- playing with a lot of different people can help out. Also practice and many may not agree but there is a thing as natural ability. Some people may play better at first person shooters than at fighting games and some may be good at all. It differs to what kind of player you are.

A nice group of friends to back you up when you meet your match...
Most of you forgot one very important trait: not being an arrogant ass.

In my opinion to become a great player at least you need some of these traits:
You need a good temper, dedication, practice, to have at least a little respect for your opponents, when you end up in defeat (one of the hardest things of all) you must admit who was the better man and the most important thing is to have fun.
