A question for all you programmers out in the forum.
1 Page: [ 1 ]
I am currently a college student learning to be a programmer, game programmer to be specific, and i was wandering something that i though their might be some people here who could answer it for me, most programmers i know like/love anime. Does being a programmer and being different/strange just happen to be together, does being a programmer make you like that, or am i just seeing an isolated thing?

Where I work (a small game studio), as far as I know, the anime fans are definitely a minority. There are programmers with their quirks and other oddities and programmers that could be considered "normal" (whatever that is). I don't think it's related to an sort of direction one takes in regards to their career path.

Hahaha what a silly question. :) There all sorts of programmers and most programmers I know aren't isolated or being that different from anyone else. There are ofcourse some few odd cases out there, but in general they are quite normal.
Where I work (development/support section of a fairly large company) there are quite a few programmers (I don't tend to do much programming at work myself though), none have let on to being anime fans, and many are grown up/married with kids. These are not the kind of people who you look at walking down the street and guess they are programmers or anime fans.
At university many of the computer science people I know have at-least watched a couple of anime series. However when I used to go to the universities anime society there seemed to be a pretty even spread of people from different courses.

Imho this species originates from a different universe ... and are there to annoy us administrators. ;)
I would have you point your browser to:
the difference...
...though 'tis not a programmer that is depicted per se', they are cut from the same mould and for all intents and purposes function the same.

I think being a programmer and love for anime aren't that related, but there are reasons to say it's likely for people to combine those two.
The choice to become a programmer comes relatively late for most people, so it has to be based on the hobbies and interests they develop earlier. So what are future programmers interested in? Mostly common things, like watching TV and playing videogames I assume.
With anime on TV and graphically beautiful games like Final Fantasy, it's likely for a certain amount of kids to be interested in that Japanese style and thus anime. Meanwhile, they'll develop an interest for the stuff 'behind' games and programs and bang, they'll study for programmer.
Note though, there will still be a large group that has not walked the line described above. Some people prefer the American style, some can't be bothered at all.
All programmers I know happen to love anime as well, but I guess that's just the reason I know em in the first place. I'm not a programmer myself by the way, although web- and/or game-design is an option for me.

I would like to think no but have no cases for it. For example I am the Vice President of the California University of Pennsylvania Japanese Anime Club. Now we have about 20 members on estimate. I'm the only officer out of the four that is NOT a computer-related major (Computer Science, Computer Engineering Technologies, or Technical Education). Then there's about......(thinking)......4 others of us that are computer science majors. Of course the no. 1 major in my university is Education since it's the no. 1 school in the state for it, in the hardest state to get certified as a teacher. Anywho that makes a good 8-9 of us that are computer-related majors in the anime club so yes unfortunately. Who cares, they all get jobs practically guarenteed with their bachelors degree when I'll require another 2 years for my Masters and then 2 years of journal publication to actually get a job I won't have tenure at.
Being a history major is not all fun and games unfortunately.

Hehehe, I guess it's because many programmers tend to do stuff when they have free time on the pc, and they might as well begin to watch anime, hence, they get attached to it.
However, I don't see that they are directly related, I've known programmers who don't particularly like anime, it's all part of your personality.

I am a EE major, focusing on digital and graphics. Anime fans are not nessecarity a common case for computer related people.
I live with a Envorimental Toxicology, Premed, International Relations, and Civil Engineer and they all like anime.
I know people who are chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, managerial economics, and english who also like anime.
Back to your question, but programmers I know are fairly normal (well, they are mostly guys, but if you ignore that, then normal). However, when you are a programmer, you prolly like computers. If you like computers you are prolly exposed to things like games or anime which may cause interest.

I guess it depends also on what kind of programmers you're talking about. There are people who just "became" programmers because they had an opportunity and nerds who spend a lot of their time before computers - "natural" programmers :P I know a lot of the second type and they are all pretty weird XD But their weirdness varies, some of them are hardcore TV series fans, some drunkards, some fantasy nerds, games, anime, books, etc. fans. You can't say someone is an Anime fan just because he is a programmer, but I can say a lot of guys who are into Manga/Anime are studying some IT related things ;) (that's what I found out on another forum going around and asking what they study :p)
I agree with makhan.

I think I pretty much agree with most of the other posts. Programmers as odd, geeky social pariahs is a stereotype (like any other) that is not often true. I myself am a programmer and I work with several other programmers and (I think) we are all pretty normal. Not that there are not strange programmers (or strange people from any other profession for that matter).
Think of programmers as alchemists (from FullMetal Alchemist) each has their way, and each treats their passion (if they think of it that way, some may see it as a skill, or a talent, or a language) diffrently, some do it to put food on the table, some enjoy it, some hate it, its really up to the individual. In my own view though some people have programming as a talent, and others have it as a skill, to me, its the closest science and art will ever meet, and that is why I love to code, you can be as artistic as you want in order to achieve any task ;p
