This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

From my last thread i see that the main complaint that people have is that most peoples family don't see the differnce between anime and every day cartoons like mickey mouse and bugs bunny and superman or whatever. what makes anime different from standard cartoons and how would you explain the differences to some one who dosen't know what anime really is like your parents or some other old person? ex: silly rabbit anime is for adults too!

Anime usually has good animation a fairly good plot and a line of diverse or intresting characters as opposed to cartoons wich usually have cheesy/unintresting animations little or no plot and almost never see a new character also anime is more realistic in the fact character can and do die (Some in fairly gruesome and horrible ways).

That's just plain discrimination. Some people who have watched, say Superman and Pokemon, may think that its better than Bleach or Code Geass. because its your own opinion, doesn't mean that it must be true for everyone, and therefore cannot be announced so forcefully.

Well, I think that there is little difference between "anime" and "cartoons". Anime is basically images that are animated by computers, and so are cartoons. The main difference is the quality of the animations, and how the images look. Japanese art (anime) would of course differentiate from cartoons (superman), such as the image of a character's nose, the style of their clothing, the LANGUAGE THEY SPEAK, etc.

Yea definitely a big difference!
For anime it has its plot, storyline and all that good stuff and in some a little thing that relates to life, morals and ethics you know or the assumed future of humans... haha!
Anyway for anime you usually have to watch all of it or most to get it just like a tv series but for cartoons it's all in the moment I think. For a regular cartoon it doesn't matter what episode you see you know who is who and the purpose and have your laughs but that's that nothing to look forward to, just something to help pass a couple minutes by not utterly boring.

Oh my.Agree with the other posts. It has a huge difference.First of all the artwork of an anime and cartoon is very differnt.A cartoon has a storyline but not a storyline as good as a manga. And mostly cartoons come in strips not pages!.Manga comes in pages and it comes every week while you can see new comic everyday such as Baby Blues,Rose is Rose or Big Nate and Dilbert. So they come everyday and in strips. Also a cartoon does not have any specific genre.A manga has a specific genre such as Slice of Life, romace, thriller, ecchi,Fantasy,Mecha which makes the manga more interesting.

Anime has plot, setting, unique characteristic development and much much much more, just like any good book or amazing TV show you seen of or read. And america cartoon (bugs bunny, spongebob) is plain simple shows that anyone can come up with during there time in the toilet.

The main difference? Usually the quality of the characters and the environment. There is a noticeable difference in anime characters and normal cartoon characters (particularly the eyes). Another factor is the depth of the plot, and the quality of the opening and ending theme songs. I would say more, but to be frank, I'm far too lazy to drone on.

I guess what I see the main true difference w/o inserting my opinions is that Anime shows tend to follow an entire story arc throughout the entire show. It doesn't last just one show, or end with the end of a season, but goes on for the duration of the whole series. "American" cartoons typically have the same central characters with a few recurring side characters that come and go, sometimes they're there and sometimes they aren't, which can be said about anime to a degree, but I feel that in anime ALL the characters are pretty central if you give the show long enough to develop. And "American" cartoons typically have one story told every one to two episodes, and even though the main character(s) are the same, the story is different every time. I don't know, thats just the main difference I see, besides my opinon being that anime art is far superior to "regular" cartoons. Wish I was that artistic, lol.

The first thing I would think of would be the plot. Anime pretty much always has an in-depth plot line. Also, most anime series have a basic progressing storyline whereas cartoons fallow a 'short story' plot line for each individual episode. The characters usually have more detail than most cartoons and possesses very distinguishing features.

The differences are endless, but I'm too lazy to write all of them off the top of my head ^__^;

Anime
In Japan many anime studios do not have the money to produce 30 frames per second animation on TV which is the reason many anime use drawing techniques to make up for the few amount of frames they have to work with (such as changing the background to create the illusion of speed as seen in the gundam series).

In addition anime is targeted at audiences from early childhood to adults, and features a wide variety of genres from action, to romance, to pornography. This may be partially to do with the fact that anime is cheaper to produce than live-action shows.

American Cartoons
In the US many major animation studios such as Disney were fortunate enough to be able to produce 30 frame per second productions, most televised series today are still 30 frames per second as a result, and because they had many more frames to work with, they had less of a need to use visual effects to make up for lost frames.

Also, I'm not so clear how things got to be this way however at some point cartoons became much more directed at children, featuring mostly slapstick comedy and lighter stories. In addition many "grade school values" were implemented into American animated films.

In addition. generally American animation usually uses very simplistic drawings to get their point across while anime tend to make characters very detailed although backgrounds remain fairly simplistic. Anime also have dark/deep themes explored much more often than American cartoons presumably because anime is aimed at older viewers as well as younger.

That's my two cents. ^^

Well.
Um let me see... The people who create Anime put more effort in what they do and so I would go for Anime rather than Cartoons any day.
Cartoons are mostly for Comedy stuff they show hilarious stuff.(The only cartoon I liked was Tom and Jerry).

My parents fail to notice it too :P

But for me, the main difference is the plot (more complicated) and the level of detail and the style in animation.

For an example, let's take eye design. In Anime eyes are really detailed, since they reflect character emotions. In cartoons though the eyes aren't that important - there is simply no need to express so much emotion.

And about the plot... Try comparing Ghost in the Shell and some "American" cartoon... The difference should be pretty obvious.

Hmm..

an anime usually depicts real life-like stories of either ordinary people or people living in their fantasy world. It can make people of all ages feel emotions such as jealousy, sadness, happiness and even love. |(o_o) emoticon

a cartoon is something that's made only to make people(includes adults) laugh, because that's the main objective of cartoons; to make people laugh through farce(a type of comedy usually through physical humor).

There are huge differences between Anime and Cartoon. I even wrote a twelve page paper on this topic in my college writing class. The most noticeable difference that you all pointed out are the story and artworks.

Stories in Anime has touch nearly all subjects from loves, violences, humors, sports, social issues, gambling, sci-if, and just about everything that people could think of. Stories in Cartoons on the other hand had a narrower target market that restricted the plots of the story to children. This restriction had filler out many themes that is often enjoyed by teens to adult.

This concept that governs what children could watch is base on culture where Anime and Cartoon is aired. Take Detective Conan for example. It is meant to be for all ages in Japan. But in the U.S it can't be air to children because of the murder themes it often evolves around. Adult cartoons like South Park and The Boonducks and The Simpson could do whatever they wanted without been sensors.

I would also like to point out that it is perfectly find in American culture to read to children stories like Sir Arther Conan Doyle The Valley of Fear or Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet or J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, which all them encompass great deal of struggles that is not normally find in cartoon. This led to a theory of mine that the reason stories in cartoon is lacking indepth story because the return on investment in cartoon is not financially feasible. Westerner entertainment companies are able to produce some really good stories as we seen in Disney movies. Is just that the amount of efforts and money needed in to produce an great cartoon don't have a corresponding return on investment to it. Anime on the other hand has an acclaim manga story to be base on. Cartoon produce on TV has a higher risk factors since it don't have a risk proof story to be base on. Also the market for cartoon entertainment in U.S is not as big as anime market in Japan which is in billions of dollars.

Another key differences in the story is the way it is been told. Anime has a set length of episodes that the story has to fit in from start to finish. This would often made anime fellow a normal plot line cycle. Normally it goes by seasons in 13, 26, or 52 episodes. This narrative would render the anime towards the achievement of an artist or emotional effects. Given a longer story line to work with, anime could develop more complex plot with more indept character developments. Cartoon's does not go by the same narrative in a plot line, therefor the story in cartoon does not have an overall goal to achieve. This would limit the cartoons to a story per episodes and render the writers to write story open ended. This would often led to an improper ending in a cartoon and a feeling of watching fillers.

I would like to get into the artistic difference but out of time.
