I got lucky and most of my friends were already playing it. I played it for 2 years and up until the very end it was a lot of fun for me. It can be very addicting and take up a ton of your time, but at the same time, depending on how you choose to play, it doesn't have to get out of hand. I got pretty far with it and racked up a ton of achievement points. In the end though, my roots in console gaming called me back and WoW just wasn't as fun anymore. It was an easy transition and I was able to just quit cold turkey so to speak, lol and bought a PS3.
I think you should play what makes you happy, I had the naysayers ask me why and tell me the same things, I ignored them to do what I liked and will continue to do so no matter what games I play. People will always have opinions about what you play, but you make the final decision, don't let them.

It's a mixed bag. I've been playing since it's come out. I've quick on and off (currently off). It's definitely fun, but terribly addictive at points.

Over all it can be a fun game, however at times it can be a huge time sink and days will jsut blend away. depending on your personality and playstyle it might be great for you, its a great way to jsut kinda hang out with people that you know if they do play since its jsut geting online and talking/playing with them.
One word of advice dont get to far into the rabbit hole, i went down that road and seen about 3 years of my live disapear to MMORP. Manage your Real life with your in game life

The question is (and it's been implied by the above posters) 'can you manage your time?' The follow-up question is 'are you someone with discipline?' The way I see it, some people are just naturally addictive, whether it's smoking, drugs, TV. You know yourself better than anyone. If you can control you're playing-time, more power to you, WoW is an incredibly fun game. I've been playing it on and off for the past 2 and a half years.
As far as the naysayers are concerned, it's a shame the game has gotten such a bad rep. It's the alpha-male effect. If you're the top product in your market, people just want to dispise it for no other reason than the fact that it's #1. It's like 'too many people have iPhones, and if I choose a different MP3 player, than I'm different. Translation- I'm cooler'. Lack of self-confidence more like. Bottom line is if you like the game, and you know you can balance your online life with your real life, then play to your heart's content. It really really is a fun game.

I´ve heard many times of this game, but I've never tried it, I'm not very fan of MMORPGs.
But for the comments around this type of game I think the effect is the same that cause game consoles.
So for my part I cannot give you a good advice.

I play warcraft and it really does require some focus to not let it consume you. It starts rather small but overtime it can take up more and more time by each passing day. To counteract this, I often make sure that I get what I need done for the day before I even touch the computer.
Truth be told, the thing that keeps me playing warcraft is the player versus player action. I find it rather rewarding to defeat others!

Having played the game for the better part of 2 and a half years I can say I did enjoy the game but it came with a price. First off I started to play it with my at the time girlfriend, I had tried it once before and just didn't get into it until she got into it. However for her she ended up getting hooked into it and basically became addicted and instead of living her life she lived it through the game. It was her relationships she built from this game the made her disconnect from everyone she knew.
It was one of the spots that ended up causing us to break up after 6 years, and her to move back in with her family due to money issues. From what I am hearing nowadays she has quit the game and is slowing starting to have a real life again.
The addictiveness of this game for some is very high, and it happens in a way that you don't even notice. As well if you don't keep tabs on how much time you spend on the game you can lose a lot of time without noticing.
It is a fun game, just be careful if you have an addictive personality.

I have noticed that warcraft is very similar to Diablo. I have tried Diablo and I feel this is a good RPG game due to the excellent three dimensional graphics and the variety of occupation. In warcraft, excellent three dimensional graphics still exist and there are more choices of occupation. Furthermore, the most important thing is that the network connection for warcraft is excellent and you can play games with your friends fluently. In my opinion, if you have recently had no game to play, warcraft is a good choice.

I played first MMORPG during first year of the University before I bought World of Warcraft and played it when I was on my free time without study at home until I was done with the University then I started playing it less after that. It wasn't affected my University study as I did passed Diploma of Higher Education. World of Warcraft kept me in social and enjoyed myself. It's addicting game but managing your time to how long you can play it while close to your friends and family are very important.
Something basic about any game is that you never get to the point where the game "plays" you and not you playing the game if you know what i mean.
As an ex-WoW player i can say WoW was quite addictive and took quite some effort to quit it for good. I got to a point where i had to raid instead of going for a drink or coffee so one day i asked myself a question: "Do i want to do this? Do i want to play WoW while my friends are calling me for beers and stuff?
Now that is the point where you partially quit and become a casual player, still making it to some raids and stuff but you are still not satisfied, and this time it is worser, you are then also not satisfied with the game because you dont spend enough time for it. That is the point where you either quit for good and live aa healthy life with friends and all or get back in it and go hardcore until something new happens in real life and makes you wonder again...
Good or bad? Anything can be good if you don't get too much into it. Gaming is good and it is most likely needed by most of us but all must be taken into moderation...

I dont like wow for some reason I mean at first it was ok cool but there something about their fighting and interaction system that kinda gets boring for me. I cant even stand the traditional I stand here and push skill 1,2,3,4,5,6 move on rinse and repeat.

You are aware of the Player-versus-Player action that is going on in that game, right?
Not really a 1,2,3 rinse and repeat there to be honest...

I played WoW for a few months. It was a fun game, but I eventually got bored of it. I don't have any experience with end-game content, but I do know that there are a lot of obligations involved with it. I had a friend who, pretty much at any given time, was playing WoW. Just from talking to him I know that if you're not active, you pretty much can't do anything fun.
That said, I really enjoyed the game. It really is a good game. Ultimately, though, I don't like it when I have obligations to play a game, and the $15 a month was just not worth it. Much to the dismay of my WoW playing friends, I quit with a level 67 paladin (This was not long after the release of WotLK).
On a side note, I have a story. When I played, there were two of my friends on my server. Just after I quit, one of said friends transfered to another server, which yet another of my friends was on, thus leaving my other friend without any real-life friends on his server. The rest of us laughed.

I was generalizing mmos that copy that style.
As for PvPing oh yes you do need the dpad to run around and pretend your avoiding the projectile that automatically targeting you and following you. Sure there are classes that requires some other movement but come on watching pvp on 2 melee classes doing jumps in order to confuse the opponent when jumping does nothing more than just that confuse the other guy while damage still ticking off your char.
