Pick up any manga and you can find many Jap sound fxs decorating the page. But sometimes when a manga is translated, some companies might edit the sound fxs and substitute english versions instead...
so, do you like your manga with the original sound fx or the english ones? I'm okay with both. But sometimes english doesn't have the range like Jpn onomatopoeia does... like 'pata pata' for the sound of footstops. It's times like these I prefer the original.

I go back and forth. Viz is one of the only companies that actually translates the sound effects in panel, so you can't get the original, you just have to take their word for it. Sometimes it makes no sense. They put the english 'equivelant' in and while we might have one sound effect for something, the same sound may have 5 different sound effects for different types. (erm, does that make sense?)
I do like it when they translate them in the back, like a glossary. I can practice sound effects that way!

I seriously think more manga companies should make use of the space between panels. There's always enough space to give an explaination for everything.
I know Love Hina's scanlations helped me understand things better because reading notes in the back or front is annoying when you don't have an example.

I prefer Japanese SFX...not cuz i understand them bettur but cuz they look nicer xD o but my faves are companies like ADV who leave the jap sfx and put captions of whut they mean

Same i prefer japanese sfx just because it catches my attention and creates an atmosphere. whereas english sfx.. it just sounds corny like "SWOOSH" even though it's literally what the japanese sfx means.

Japanese fx as in writing in english? like guu~? ... and english as in just english like grr? ... i say if the manga is in english might as well ruin the rest by using english fx... it doesnt match very well with japanese faked fx... the sound fx are the only thing i can read in a japanese manga..that and a few other things... but since english manga is all censored already it might aswell go the full distance and have english fx
I find it interesting that different languages have different sounds for the same things. so most of the time, there is no direct translation for a sound effect in japanese to english. there might be simliarities, but it's not exactly right. english has only so many words compared to asian languages. i think it's fun knowing other languages and comparing them (i know stuff other than japanese)
i edit manga so sometimes i keep the effect in (that or i'm lazy) and have a little side note to explain what it is, or i translate it if it fits.

I always prefer the original. But when I'm scanlating/editing, most groups ask that sfx be edited to English :/
For sound fx, i want the japanese version as it is, just spelled out in english so i can imagine how they sound like. I'd appreciate it if english versions use a bit more japanese words on it. Tokyo pop is good in doing that ... atleast for the series i've read from it like Pitaten. They have the "nyu, nyaa " etc ... just like how Misha would say it in the japanese version.

Yeah, what he said. Sometimes I don't understand what the sfx in English means.Like for example "ACHNEE!" I don't get it. The Japanese sfx just look more interesting.

I'm a purist when it comes to my Japanese goods, so the origonal is nice. Not to mention it sort of forces you to learn what the characters/symbols are for the sounds. Kinda cool to learn something new ^_^
I prefer the Japanese. I don't like it when they mess with the manga any more than necessary. Besides, the Japanese sfx look cooler.
Yeah, anyway the japanese sfx makes manga more funny and you actaully understand it^^

Japanese all the way. Just make little captions between the panels. Like fan scantalators. ^^
