I know what you mean, lol. We've got a lot of pirated stuff here as well and the thing is, the quality is just as good for a fraction of the price! Not that I buy any anime :P I'm lucky in the sense that I've got a cousin who's anime mad. I just borrow off him. And yes, he goes for original stuff which costs a bomb. Haha

Err...torrent it then (you could torrent almost anything...i think)
basically...same quality and it aint illegal and its free (well actually i wouldnt know if its not illegal...but theres been argument that as long as its not licenced...distributing it in the net is legal *refers to anime*. But for hollywood movies...dunno about that).
If what you want to watch torrent "able" then id suggest you do so. Unless you prefer watching stuff on your big ass TV screen (i wouldnt know if you have a big tv), then i guess downloading is out of the question.
and pirated stuff are sort of gambling to me. Cuz ive bought stuff before and some of em were as good as the original and some dont work, REALLY bad quality or WORSE...wrong item (There was a movie "She's the Man" which we decided to buy but it was a pirated DVD...and they gave us "She's the One" <-- ridiculous).
Its your money...so...its up to you

Blackvice is right you know.
To buy from here or there is really the question that only you can decide ^^
From Original
More Expansive
There is a chance that the money will be contributed to the author where he or she can continue his work or start a new project or whatever.
(there might be more advantage/disadvantage)
From Pirated
Be wary since you might buy one with same name but with an entire different story line or Same name but the movie is made in different time line like 20 to 60 years ago.
Bad Quality
Not Supporting the author for sure
you taking a chance whether its illegal or not (a gamble basically)
(pretty there is acouple more reason to this one)

Pirating is illegal. Downloading via torrents is also illegal, don't fool yourself. Of course this applies to the US and Canada. I'm not sure of other countries.
That said, it's really up to you if you want to go pirated or original. The question you really have to ask yourself is, is the difference worth it? Would the moral injustice eat away at your conscience?
Those that think the quality is the same, do you watch your anime on an HDTV or an SDTV. I will agree that on an SDTV you probably wouldn't notice a difference but on an HDTV, especially using a progressive scan DVD player that the difference is quite clear.
Also, with Pirated DVDs you run the chance of having fricked up subtitles. I remember I was watching a pirated DVD at a friends house for Ah! My Goddess the movie. My friend is Japanese so she didn't need the subtitles. However, the english subs were so bad that it seemed like it was seriously written by a 3 year old and the names were completely wrong. Belldandy was Peeduhday. Not only did I not understand what was going on specifically, but it completely ruined the experience.

A question of conscience. But usually whenever I download a torrent and I like what I've seen, I'll get the original DVD as well.

Hmm...Well, I download and buy anime. But like everyone says, it's up to you.
I've bought many animes(some anime that I haven't heard of before) from other animefans that want to sell their anime. In that way I save a lot of money and I contribute to the author of the anime(I think), or at least the company that sells the anime. But anime isn't that expensive to day, 4 episodes for 10 dollars. Come on, that's pretty cheap(if you know where to look for the anime). Usaully I download anime because I want to know if the anime is good enough to buy, if it isn't, to bad then.

I torrent everything. Once I get out of college and get a good job I can start thinking about buying anime, but right now paying $60+ for a series is out of the question. I guess I could barrow from friends, but I like to own everything. Most of what I get is unlicensed anyway.

There's a lot of pirated copies that have better quality than DVDs, and buying the DVDs are way too expensive, even rich anime fans I know just pirate the anime.

Buying pirated stuff only supports the pirating community, you are only wasting your money on cheap crap :P
If you are going to pirate, just get it for free off friends or off torrents/irc/direct download
While that is just as much illegal as selling pirated stuff, at least you are only wasting bandwith, not money :p
I dont pay for pirate stuff, but i wouldnt object to someone giving me it :P
You can at most times buy dvds online for cheaper than what they are instore.
I want Cowboy Bebop remix collection boxset, but thats $119.95 at retail price, but online i can buy it for $101. Sure its not a massive saving but its better than nothing, and even with postage i still end up being cheaper. With postage online it generally works out cheaper per title if you buy in bulk. Instead of buying here and there, wait for a bit and save the money then say once a month buy what you want and you'd probably end up saving some money even with postage
I love watching anime but when it comes to parting with $$$ i'd never pay for pirated stuff, what you pay for pirated stuff, you could........erm, buy some mcdonalds or something xD or a......erm some clothes?......>_>;

Buying second hand does not contribute to the author/producer. Buying second hand is not illegal, but make no mistake, the money you pay to a friend or to someone on Ebay does not go anywhere but to the seller himself/herself.
Fansubbers put more quality into their work than either the corporations or the pirates(Who usually sell the fansubs).
Avoide the whole mess of buying and get the fansubs yourself and if you really feel bad, buy the japanese dvds from amazon.jp or something. I have done it a few times, but I will never stop watching fansubs, the American companies lost my business when they changed Chrno Crusade to Chrono Crusade.
GLOVES ARE OFF FUNimation/ADV/4Kids/whoever else!

Pirated anime and manga is certainly a HUGE temptation! Especially here in NZ where I can't buy many of the series available in the US! I'd have a very hard time turning down a copy of Steel Angel Zero,DearS or Rozen Maiden to name but three off of the top of my head if I found a pirated copy somewhere! I think I would rather save my hard earned money and buy the real thing! I like to think that all the people who put their talent and hard work into making the dvd's appreciate it!
All my anime is fansubbed i guess all mycollection is pirated, but the translations are top notch hehehe maybe thats why i collect them.

@Antman- *Spanks* Dont worry Tide doesnt read all of my shouts xD
