Fashion = Style?

People often praise others for having 'great style', 'good taste' or being 'fashionable'.
But does wearing what are so-called, 'IN' clothes, enough to label someone as stylish?
I think this is an issue of individuality.
And that style overrides fashion anytime.
A person with a fantasic sense of design and style can look fabulous even if he/she isn't decked in this season's 'Must-Haves', so to speak.
Afterall, fashion is all about looking good.
Therefore, a stylish person holds her own - regardless of the deciduous trends witnessed in fashion.
Besides, a person all clothed in the latest designer threads need not think about his/her outfit. They know they can't go wrong with the latest fashions.
And what does this show?
There is no creative input here! This is what we familiarly coin as 'following fashion blindly'. Such a person need not have a good sense of style, it suffices to dress as 'Vogue' says.
One can be fashionable, to always look right in the trendiest ensembles. However, we would then be missing out on what we value so much - creativity.
Compared to the person who dresses to her own liking, one who has creative inputs on her image, one who looks put-together with her dressing individuality, the 'blindly fashionable' person doesn't appear so amazing afterall.
Hence, style over fashion.
Fashion is all about style but style does not entail fashion.
Style does not need fashion as an avenue for showcase ;)

I totally agree with what you're saying, and i applaud all those with great style, because without them we wouldn't have fashion or trends in the first place :D
Nicely said...lol...Ever one has a style but not everone has a good fashion...bunnylovinI totally agree with what you're saying, and i applaud all those with great style, because without them we wouldn't have fashion or trends in the first place :D
Exactly.
You don't need to be a la mode to be stylish.
I wish people who follow fashion trends blindly can eventually attest to this...

Oh dear, fashion versus style. This will end up long, I'm sure.
In my opinion, "fashion" is trendy. Fashion is what we see on the catwalks, the magazines, the advertisements, media, everywhere we look. Fashion can certainly be a part of style, but they aren't the same. Fashion is brand name, expensive, and fashion is more about who you're wearing rather than what. If you follow fashion shows and exhibits, then you have to wonder how some of the things featured are fashion at all! They can be ugly, clashing, and absolutely unflattering on even the prettiest model. But somewhere, someone is going to shell out some major bucks because maybe it's got the hottest name in the business stamped on the tag.
Style, however, is personal. A stylish person is a person that looks good in what they're wearing. Style can be anything from $2000 jeans at the hippest boutique in the metro area to a shirt for a dollar at Goodwill. Style is what you make it, and isn't limited to any name other than your own. Everyone has a style, but not everyone is fashionable. Just as someone can be fashionable, but not have a style. They just wear whatever is cool at the time, and if it changes, then so do they. They don't have any style other than what the designer thinks, in my opinion.
I mean, one of the most beautiful things in my closet is a skirt that I sewed from scraps of cloth for less than $30 dollars, yet when wearing it downtown when I do decide to shop in the more pricey areas, it's been estimated at a $600 skirt! Go figure, huh? But I wouldn't sell it for the world because it's mine. It's part of my style, and I wouldn't want to sell that to anyone else.

Well said

Which is why style transcends fashion. And which is why I cannot concur with people who equate one to the other indiscriminately.
One can be fashionable and yet not be stylish.
Style is all about looking good and exuding your own vibes :))
Well, I like to follow trends, but also make them my own. I want to be original, yet stylish. I have never gotten into that legging trend, however. Ick! But I do love skinny jeans and boots, I think its a good combo. Anyway, my personal style, is more chic and simple in a good way, I like to wear alot of turtlenecks, skirts, tight sweaters, boots, etc. Its comfortable and cute.
I think some one already said it, but it is style that creates what's in fashion right?
well anywho, i couldn't say which I prefer, because I'm a mix of both, mainly because I get what I think looks good on me and is comfy lol whether it's fashion or not, don't really care.
as what's already been said, you don't have to be 'in fashion' to look good.

Um.. no.. wearing "IN" clothes is really only a small part of it.
Believe it or not, its "HOW" you wear "IN" clothes that really brings it all together.
How you wear it consists of attitude, and also whether you know how to dress your body type. Lets face it, you are kind of bulgy at the waist or lack of tone in your legs, you don't want to wear clothes that are tight or revealing in those areas, despite if those clothes are "IN" so to say. When you do that you make yourself look fatter than you probably actually are. I have seen a lot of people in malls who wear tight clothes so that the fat rolls from the back near their bra roll over or bulge, I mean come on, you can wear form fitting, but not skin tight. And if people would be more honest about what actually fits, the so called "larger size you had to pick" can easily make you look like you have lost weight and even gained tone to your body.

I love high fashion, but I don't care if I have the newest 'in' thing! I dress however I want. Yes, I wear designer clothes, but I don't get sometimes just because it's 'in', I get it because I like it. I wear my clothes to my own individual style. My style is strange and it varies a lot! I could be wearing non-designer army style type things, while the next day, I could be wearing all designer clothes. Yeah, that's how much my style could vary! I basically wear what I feel like wearing that day. ^^;;

I think style makes fashion not the other way around.
Anyway, I think fashion trends are based on the designer's personality and taste. So, it doesn't mean that because those "in" clothes looks fantastic, it will automatically looks good on you. A particular fashionable dress might look good on you but not on me.
I think the meaning of style varies from people to people. The level of style can be based on one's customs, taste, personality. We all have different taste of style, so some people might think you look stylish but I won't.
And a style of one person can be affected by one's attitude. You might be wearing the most stylish dress but if you don't feel confident or you feel uncomfortable wearing it, I think that affects the over-all look.

" Fashions come and go, but styles are forever" YSL
I think this statement is totally true. Fashion does not define a person, it just shows that the person is a 'follower'. A person's style will show his true personality. Don't you think?

I completely agree with you, crackalicious.
Wearing what's "in" doesn't necessarily make someone look good, yet a person can wear something "out" and look drop-dead-gorgeous!
Personally, although I love following High Fashion (particularly French!), even if I can't afford it, that is not necessarily style to everyone. A lot of catwalk clothes are "fashion" but if you wore them out if the street, you'd be lucky to be thought "stylish," and more likely to get "O_o."
I see style as more of a personal thing, derived from people's taste and personality, while fashion is more of what's "in" depending on designer (Armani makes nice suits!), or what is generally considered popular.
But that's just my 2 euros. ^_~

I was never interested in being fashion and I dont have a style for my own. Everytime I read the new tendences in clothes or whatever I turn around because I dont feel I should follow others, I wear what I like and have my hair the way I like it.
