Which manga company do you like the most?
3 years 2 months ago
Recently, manga has become more popular in the U.S. It's no longer just Viz, Tokyopop, and Darkhorse Comics in the manga market. Many new manga companies had started up, such as Del-Rey Manga and CMX (manga division of DC Comics). Plus I heard Marvel Comics will also start their own manga division.
So I'm curious about which manga company do you guys prefer. Or which manga company do you think is the best overall? Or which one has the best translations (for the most part)? I want to hear what you guys think. ^_^
Here's a list of some U.S. manga companies I know:
Viz
Tokyopop
Darkhorse Comics
Del-Rey Manga
CMX
CPM Manga (Record of Lodoss War, Slayers)
Studio Ironcat (recently closed down)

I like a lot of manga companies
Hm, I can't say which is the best... but I do know I really really hate Viz for their shoddy work. Their work on Hot Gimmick is appalling -- inconsistent translations, screwing up terms/names & bad graphic editting.
I still buy it tho.. because I can't read Japanese that well.
And don't get me started on what they did to Es21 :D

I just noticed that most of my manga's are from tokyopop, but i also like ADV and ComicOne, they do some pretty good work on translation...though for ComicOne they do mostly Chinese comics, and sometimes they don't do such as good job as i have the chinese comics, and the english doesn't match up or is off. but over all they do decent work.
I bought a few volumes of Naruto from Viz, and the editor must've been sleeping on the job or something, 'cuz there were so many typos!! Other series seem to have been done better. But I also noticed the inconsistency in Hot Gimmick. I haven't read the Japanese version or anything, but I noticed that the way they speak (teen lingo, etc) seems to vary from volume to volume! And *I* could have edited the image on the volume 1 cover better!! XP
Anyway, most of my manga comes from Viz, 'cuz they have my favorite series. But I really think I prefer Tokyopop's quality!! I haven't had any experience with any of the other companies, though, so I can't judge them.

I find that Del-Rey Manga is the best. They have done great work on Tsubasa. I like their translation notes aslo.
TokyoPop is okay. I like what they have done with Gravitation for the most part. Most of my manga come from them since they seem to have the most series.
Viz is the worst in my opinion. They are slow, and they seem to be the only ones not selling the authentic right to left pages.

Del Rey is definitely the best. I buy xxxHolic and Tsubasa (which are published by them) and they just ooze quality. Instead of not translating the sound effects at all (*cough*Tokyopop*cough*) or completely replacing them with English ones (*cough*Viz*cough*), they put the translations in small print right next to the original Japanese sound effects. Plus, they include the color pages at the beginning of the manga. The best part is the translation notes at the back, though. I don't even mind that their manga is pricer than others because they put so much care into making it really good.
Tokyopop is okay. Sometimes I notice inconsistencies and typos, but otherwise they're fine. They have color pages in some of their mangas, but I don't know if they've just started doing it, they're being selective, or some manga just don't have color pages. I'm quite happy with the way they've handled Suikoden i and Fruits Basket.
ADV is good overal, with reliable translations and translator notes. They also translate sound effects like Del Rey and include color pages. The thing that really, really, sucks about them is that they fired about 25 people from their manga division and are going to concentrate mainly on manga that they also own the anime rights for. This means that many of their manga are going to be released even MORE slowly, or dropped altogether. Several of them haven't even gotten a second volume despite being released last year.
Viz is... not so good. They replace the sound effects with English ones which obsucres the artwork, they don't include color pages, their covers and logos for manga are usually pretty bad, they tend to be a little edit-happy, and they're pretty slow with some series. Also, they messed up Rose's name in FMA.
I don't own any manga by the other companies, but I'm never buying anything from CMX because of the way they treated Tenjho Tenge. I'm not a fan of that series, but what they did is just silly.

lol i would like scanlations but i do prefer to have the actual hard item in my hand as to a computer pic, but i have to admit viz does do some really bad translation, especially in naruto, the translation compare to the chinese one is way off, not to mention the anime and manga use different terms, which is confusing. i'd wish they do a more accurate translation as they did with kenshin, now that was translated pretty good. too bad the anime isn't out for this series i'd get it for sure.

I am finding I like Del-Rey's translations the best. Actually bought a manga that I hadn't read anything about just because they translated it. (and it was good!)
Viz... their earlier stuff is riddled with spelling mistakes. Their newer stuff seems to be better though. But I actually buy very few of their series, the only one that I actually buy is Hana-Kimi. And they screwed up names etc. in that too!
Tokyopop is another favorite of mine, they do a decent job of translating. They've learned to stick to one thing that they're good at, although - they screw up the anime that they release.
ADV is ok... depending on the series, unfortunatly they took too much on and the lesser-known series are suffering. Damnit! I want more Sweet and Sensitive! They also (saddly) try to make the manga more americanized - Osaka and her meatball sandwich in azudai? -_-
I haven't read any of CMX's releases, but I did look at some volumes in the store and... I really didn't like how the book was bound. Maybe it's just me :/

TokyoPop is the only one that hasn't completely disappointed me somehow. o.o Then again, I rarely pay attention to the companies it's from. ^_^;;
But I do know that ADV is far too slow with releases. They license stuff and then don't continue it. Drives me crazy. *weeps over "Your and My Secret"* I'll never see volume 2...

I like Del-Rey because they translated xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.
Del-Rey. A bit more than Tokyopop but Del-Rey includes extras too. A big plus in my book.
My other is Tokyopop.
My other is Tokyopop.
DMP is my favorite manga company. They treat all of their releases with care and give them quality paper, packaging, etc. Plus they've done an excellent job of exploiting the boys' love market. As a matter of fact, DMP is probably the only manga company I honestly like (without any reservations or anything like that).
I abhor CMX for what they did to Tenjho Tenge. However, I continue to support their release of From Eroica With Love, because it's unedited and becuase I grudgingly admire them for bringing out such an old, classic shoujo series. Not to mention the fact that Eroica is hysterically funny and just a delightful read all around.
I dislike Viz for the fact that they've begun editing more and more series--now shoujo manga (such as Descendants of Darkness) and seinen manga (such as I"s) in addition to many Shonen Jump titles. The sheer inconsistency of their editing just annoys the heck out of me, and I'm really upset that they seem to have gone backwards (i.e., the industry should be progressing toward *less* censorship, not more).
Del Rey is cool, but they haven't put out much that I'm personally interested in. A lot of Tokyopop's releases are pretty low-quality, but at least they don't edit artwork (even if some of their translations leave a bit to be desired). So I don't mind if they're the ones who license a manga I like. ADV Manga has performed some edits here and there, so they've gone a lot lower in my eyes. I used to think fairly highly of them, despite their erratic release schedule and rather crappy slate of titles.
