This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

Is it just me or... is it kind of creepy how some people are really really really obsessed with anime and manga?
I don't mean to bash or offend anyone, but, I think that's going too far.
I mean, I've had all-nighters watching a series or reading manga or whatever. It's just that some people are so into it that it's not even funny, but actually sort of disturbing >_>
I think it's mostly people who try really hard to be Japanese. I mean, I think the Japanese culture is great and all but, to go so far... Is that really healthy?
Anyway.. I was wondering what other people thought about this.
Of course, if your thoughts differ, really say something, because I think it'd be interesting to see how someone would defend this.

It is the same as any addiction. addiction to watching sports, addictions to reading, addictions to games all have the same effects as addictions to anime and manga.

I see your point but I don't really agree.
I think addictions for different things are just like that-- different.
And I also think it depends on how much you're addicted, as well as that it's not really healthy.

In almost all those addictions and almost every addiction the main thing that happens is that you tend to end up being a social outcast. in that case they all cause the same mental stress/anguish.

So you agree it's not healthy?
I'm not saying all people become the outcasts of the world or anything.
And I don't really understand your position.
You think it doesn't really matter (about the whole wannabe-Japanese, spend all my money on anime/manga thing) because whether it's this or some other addiction, the outcome is the same anyway?
If so.. well, I was more concerned about your opinion on the obsession itself, and not necessarily how it turns out.

I agree it isnt healthy. i guess, i was just stating that there are bigger addiction problems out there than this. people actually die from their addictions to smoking, alcohol, drugs, and even video games. i guess it just isnt creepy to me that people have an addiction for this. it is far creepier to me that people have an addiction to alcohol when it doesnt taste good, it impairs your judgement, and it can kill.

It's true that there are other addictions that are more "creepy" and have a worse reputation.
I suppose I just think the one at hand is kind of pathetic and I don't really know why it aggravates me. While others laugh, I'm actually kind of disgusted.
But I guess you can't really except a good response from an anime/manga community.

The principe is always the same. You do often the same thing. It's not really healthy to be 'attracted' on something and do it over and over. Well, how much you're addicted is important.

A person can be obsessed with anything, and anime is just another category for obsessions. As far has being unhealthy, that depends on if you are referring to physically or mentally. Are you into anime so much that you are denying your body proper sleep, food, and exercise? Or are you beginning to believe you are one of the characters in an anime series (this would be the mental part)? You can be obsessed with something and still be perfectly healthy (both mentally and physically).

Like a friend used to tell me; " You have NO life " ^_^
I should consider myself as a person that is obsessed with anime; Looking back, several aspects of my life and myself have changed alot during these two years of pure otakuness^^. But even so, I really don't care if it's "going to far" or not, I like what I am and love what I do..and that's about it. Conviction is a luxury of those on the sidelines.

And a little sidenote: I'm also trying to be as much *japanese* as I can, but that's the love ^__^

Yeah, I agree with you 100%. You do what you love to do and if people don't like it, the hell with them. I don't think you should live your life suppressed about what other people think is "right" or "normal", because living suppressed like that isn't really living to me anyway. Although, I'm not trying to be Japanese, nor do I pull all nighters to watch anime (although I do lose some sleep because maybe after seeing one episode you just gotta watch the next one), but I still consider myself "obsessed" with anime. For me my obsession is that I must always have something to watch. Meaning as soon as I'm done with a series or almost done watching it, I must have a new series lined up for my next viewing. Even if I'm not currently watching anime, I like the peace of mind that there is still something for me to watch if need be.

I would say I'm really REALLY obsessed with anime and manga but I have my limitations, you know? I may be a big dork when it comes to this and I do spend a lot on it but I believe the entertainment is worth it. I'm 100% sure that I definitely am NOT a social outcast. I rarely speak about anime with my friends since they're not really into it and I'm not gonna waste my time trying to convert them! It's their loss. Speaking of the matter, there's an unofficial anime club at my school. As much as I love anime, that club sucks and it's not going anywhere and I didn't even bother to run for office to change it because of the people in it. I mean don't get me wrong, they're nice but I would say the majority were geeks and those were the people that give anime a bad name. (OR maybe because they're interested in categories different from mine... OH WELL! It still sucks!)
Now those that are the Japanese-wannabes show that they really admire the culture, but as long as they don't regret and hate the fact that they're something other than Japanese is fine. Also, as long as those Japanese wannabes don't make the real Japanese look bad, it's grand. I mean I wouldn't consider myself a Japanese-wannabe. I do want to go to Japan, I listen to anime music (I of course look at the translation), and I admire those who took Japanese up as a second or third language due to anime (that's a lot of hard work starting from scratch) basically because I'm really interested, (Japan's cool!) but I still would want to stay my Filipino self.
Now spending tons and tons of money is not that bad. But it's only disturbing where you spend to the point where you can't even support yourself when it comes to not being able to cater to your basic needs such as food and a shelter. (Now I believe that's really really rare-- I HOPE -- and really creepy.) But you know, that's them-- they'll do what they'll do. Nobody has the right to stop them from being what they are (unless it's a life-threatening thing -- that's a whole different story!)
But people do have to keep in mind that anime cannot be your whole life! People that isolate and lock themselves up in their rooms for WEEKS just need to take a break -- go outside, have some fun with your friends -- for others: MAKE FRIENDS -- while you're still young, live a regular life where you can learn from your stupid mistakes, not just the ones made by anime characters. I admit I do spend a whole bunch of time on anime but if my friends offered to treat me to a dinner and I was surfing through the internet on anime, I would shut down the computer and go with my friends. You gotta have a limit. (sigh) I did a long comment again... =)
