Harry Potter banned?!
You know compare to harry potter, they should ban Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, as well as Bewitched and those sort of cheap magic and vampire hunter shows with plenty of witchcraft and violence...not to mention ban Lord of the Rings which is also magic...and then...lets see, ban cartoons too, cause a lot of the are based on animals killing themselves but just won't die...
I wonder what these conservationist overzealousness are based on, what are they thinking, how do they believe it will hurt their community and nation of people?
It is not wrong to look at such things, and it is certainly not wrong to regard them as entertainment, how else would that have been eh?
Surely you know the answer and the line between practicing witchcraft and just taking it as a means of entertainment.

That is a joke, I find this absolutely funny lol :)
*scratches head* I though Salem already showed that black magic didn't exist/cannot be practiced to that extent and they were instead persecuting healers and innocent people with better crops and cows.. -_- I'm surprised this is in California too.. @~1@
The article is old, but it does raise an interesting point. Why to do some people identify popular targets such as HP or anime as "dangerous" to children.
I think if you research the group of people who are protesting HP you will find several types of people. I think it is mostly about control, but I can see a variety of reasons. I think some people are unable to feel secure in their own beliefs and so protest popular movements in the hopes of support for their own beliefs. These are generally your religious-type book-burners. They find don't feel comfortable having people around who can either 1) accept the possibility of in this case magic and still have their beliefs, nor do they feel comfortable with having 2) things their beliefs indicate are "evil" being casually enjoyed. You will also find what I like to refer to as bandwagon joiners. You will find some people who just find it enjoyable to be part of the group. These are the people who respond with "well it talks about witchcraft" or "the characters use magic to hurt people"when asked why they are protesting. When you see them on TV they stutter and say ridicuous things so that you just know they have not researched the books at all. You may also find people with deeper ulterior motives, such as people who want their own books to have a better chance at selling or people who work at schools/stores and find it inconvenient to deal with all the fans discussing it and buying/bringing products with them. I don't believe that many of the protesters are truly protesting out of the belief that HP is truly dangerous. The majority of people in this world are capable of reason and understand that books and movies cannot make people do things. They can expose people to new ideas and allow them the information to decide to reach out in new directions, but they are not responsible for actions. If messages forced people to act in certain ways then everyone would have smoked in the 40's in America and no one would smoke now. People make their own decisions regardless of the influences around them.

Yeah, i heard about this a long time ago. I bet some religious groups are behind the bannings or the district felt pressure and banned them.
Wasn't there a case a while back where some soccer moms tryed to get sailor moon banned?

Well i dont know if you can ban witchcraft from school in general because many practice it as a religion...
as far as it containing witchcraft... just do an indepth study on its origins and intent ... it in itself will prove that it contains and actively projects witchcraft. By just looking over the witchcraft or its references doesnt exclude witchcraft.

i think the school is scared of the dangers that some witchcraft holds.

I don't care too much for Harry Potter but I will read the books and watch the movies if I'm really bored sometimes but I don't think it's right to ban something like this. What the heck it wrong with it? it's not like kids are going to jump off roof tops, or take thire parents car and drive it off of a cliff to see if it'll fly [I hope not o___O] I don't think anyone is stupid enought to buy into things like that which we know arn't real in any way shape or form.
I personaly think those people are idiots. who does something like that? I wouldn't stand for it. If they banned Harry Potter how come the don't banned anything else that's close to Harry Potter? They should just like...Banned anything that is impossable then if they take anyway Harry Potter and not anything else -____-
I think I have made my point goodbye now X3

But these are just books, and they should be able to seperate fiction from reality. Heck look at some of the dangers christanity holds. Look at some of the stuff done in the name of that.

"What better way to get a book read then by banning it?" Hermine Harry Potter and the Chamber of Scerets
Seriouly though, that will be one interesting court case. "So let be get this straight, your kid was suspended for week for having a Harry Potter book at school?" Judge for the case Non-Overberring Parent v. Over-berring School Sytem.

Consider the Satanic Bible... its a book... yet it tells its readers to Commit every one of the Ten Commandments. One of those commandments is " Thou Shalt not Murder"
its a book yet it has drastic ramifications for everyone who truely reads it.
Just remember not everyone can seperate fiction from reality. If they could the Satanic Bible wouldnt be as effective.

Yes, but the satanic Bible is way different. Yes, harry potter has witchcraft in it, but it also has a good message. Unlike the satanic bible.

i was giving and example of a book ... that in the hands of someone.. can have devastating results.
likewise, harry potter might not cause someone to do something drastic...
but just remember, just cuz you cant see radiation at work... if you are exposed too much of it,... it will eat at you. You dont have to acknowledge that it is there... cuz it will eat at you no matter if you except its side effects or not.
remember most who started in the religion and practice of witchcraft started in an innocent act... leading to much more over time. Harry Potter might be that step in the door for some, while the Ouija Board for another.
