I was wondering who here likes classical music, who your favorite composers might be, and if you want, how you got into liking classical music. Currently, I'm a trombone performance major at the university of alabama. I don't think I'll graduate with that as my major, but that's yet to be determined. My family is musical, so classical music has always been a part of my life, that's why I love it so much.

Haven't listened much to classical music. But I think that Vivaldis Four Seasons is damn good (especially the Spring) and Mozarts Eine kleine nachtmusik is good too. Heard some of Beethovens pieces (can't remember nothing but the 5th symphony by "name"). And I like Finlandia which is piece of Jean Sibelius (need to spread Finland to the world =P).
Ain't really my thing though and I don't understand a thing of classical music in terms of compositiong and playing.
I prefer classical music and "traditional instruments" when they are well sampled to a rap beats (what a waste, eh?)

I'm not sure I know the Mozart piece you said, but I know the others. Sibelius wrote a great deal of music, and I like a lot of what he's done. As far as it being mixed in with rap beats? If done tastefully it's alright, but sometimes I think it's just done for the heck of it, and I don't like that too much.

I've listened to classical music all my life and I love it too. My favorite composers include Debussy, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Offenbach, and too many others to list.

I remember listening to Finlandia when I was a kid and it creeped me out with its gloomy intro.

Im very picky about my classical.

For baroque...
For Bach...I prefer piano transcriptions over anything else...fast minor key works and slow major key works...his fugues are very interesting
Not a Handel fan...

For classica...
For Mozart...I love his piano concertos to death, but I really can't stand anything else (maybe the requiem mass is
an exception)
Haydn is cool, but only if it is a piano piece performed by Alfred Brendel
Beethoven...not really a fan.

pretty much, I dont really like music from 1820's-1900's

Even though Debussy kinda grows on you...

I'm a Tchaikovsky fan, and I know of one of his works off the top of my head. The first and last movement (I and IV) of his "Manfred Symphony." If you want to just stream it, go here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/classical/listen/tchaikovsky_manfred.shtml
That's a link to the BBC's radio archive or something. If you want to d/l it, I think the easiest way to get it if you can't find it right out would be to look for the Gankutsuou Classical Compilation. The first two tracks on there are the first and last movement of 'Manfred.'

I sometimes listen to Mozart and Beethoven's works but not too sure about the rest of the mentioned composers mentioned earlier. I certanly like Moonlight Sonata, Air on the G String by Johann Sebastian Bach and some selected others. This thread makes me think about givine other composers a listen.

I don't really listen to classical pieces after i end up in the university.(hey..i can't bring all my stuff there, plus i've gave up in music a long time ago..dun ask me why...)
so, used to play piano and i am a double bass player in the school orchestra.
for piano..i don't really fancy Bach's works..dunno why, i just can't explain.
i prefer playing songs from the romantic period compare to classical and baroque.
maybe because i like to play pieces with a freer style..XD
compare to piano pieces, i'm more familiar to orchestra arrangement.
Bizet's Carmen is cool...as well as Tchaikovsky's March Slave.
i still remember my fingers get tons of blisters because of March Slave and i'm playing that double bass part after i've only learnt the bass for one year!
classical music is great...as long as you can see the beauty of it..you'll like it.. :)

I'm into classical but my knowledge is really limited and I'm picky, which I guess is pretty sad since I was in orchestra for a nice period of time. When it comes to classical, I prefer just string instruments without percussion and whatnot. My fave song is Bach's Concerto in D Minor and I only know that because I like the song. Hehe.. ^^;

I occasionally enjoy listening to classical music; my favourite instrument to listen to is cello, followed by violin. Hands down my favourite piece is Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Bach's Cello Suite No. 1, Prelude. I've listened to it probably hundreds of times, and it still gives me chills. You might recognize it if you heard it - I've picked it out before in different movies, including Master and Commander. Does anyone else have any reccomendations for good cello music, while we're at it?

I enjoy Tchaikovsky's three ballets (Swan Lake, The sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker) a lot. I find his music overly dramatic and I like that.
I also like Tartini's Devil's Trill, it's one of the greatest pieces I have ever heard; I also like the myth behind it's creation.
