Im my own opinion, the anime should can make the watcher interest for the first time! The Funny and Action is well designed, so the watcher won't became boring by just full Action, like slash and flash! I mean, like Full Metal Panic! The anime is funny and cool! With a good Action and Funny act composition! So everyone who watched it will not became boring.. Also the storyline should not just like line story! It should be insert some sub-story into it!

For my point of view, a great anime should have:
- nice graphic design: because its what gives a first impression, and its the way of show the world of the series.
- More than one plot, or one primary plot, with secondary plots give always a more relaxing and efficient way to tell the story.
- Balance: like nolimitz says, have some action and some comedy and something well balanced.
- Different personality characters: why? because all the people always want to see someone like they (in real life) to apear on the series, or someone that fits their personality

* in some cases have "evolution or chages" in the charaters, I mean the grow up or change with time or situations
** and if the anime require them, a nice mechanical, enviroment and costume designs.

The anime must be excelent in his class.

a comedy got to make you laught, a horror got to make you jump from the chair, an Action anime must exite, and pump up your adrenaline, romatincs got to make you AAAAAWWWWWW. And allways got to leave you in the end asking for more and more and cursing the fact that you got to wait until next episode.

graphics are not so important to me, that way i can recoment an anime for what it is, and not for how it looks.

some animes cross geners and mix up, lets say, accion and comedy, those are great, but still if you ask me for a great comedy anime, i could point you to full metal panic (comedy+action) but first i can say school rumble.

Well a Top Notch Anime should have following components:

-First of all decent till good Animation quality, and good Action Scene Performances by the Characters. I mean the movement of the Characters in any Action, be it Action, Horror, Comedy or even Drama should be smooth. A good Anime should avoid using too much One-way movement, thus Freeze-in-Action

-second thing, There has to be a certain amount of Humor in this Anime. And thus, the main Characters should be created sympathtic to the Viewers. They should feel with those Characters during their devolopment process. In other words,the main Characters have to be interesting, or maybe let some minor Characters develop themselves the secret popular Character to the audience.

-If the story and the development process of the Character can be seen, thus the display of the Action runs fluid,... then you have a decent good Anime...

-complicated Stories can be veeeeery good, but IMO sometimes not. In terms of Rurouni Kenshin for example, the Creators did a great job in drawing the Fans into the story,... into Kenshin and his friends and rivals,... drawing them within the excitement...

Well I think there are two big factors. One is quality of story.. so no recycled stuff that you have seen before in another anime, and is the story coherent, does it make sense? Furthermore the story has to be one that can be understood by the general public without needing to do background research. The second biggest factor for me is animation quality.. with all the new technology out there, the quality of new anime should be sharp and more emphasis on 3-dimensional effects. Secondary to these 2 primary themes yes, some fighting and comedy always helps!

Well actually it depends IMO on how that recycled stories are displayed in it's Actions. IMO some recycled stories make a good impression 'cause the fights are spectacular... But I cannot figure out which one I have in my directly...

For a good anime, I would prefer... first a pretty design (it's the most important factor forme), and then... the end!The end has to be worked, because it can change our point of view on an anime...

Hehe, my point of view includes, background design,pretty good soundtracks/melody/, good characters' development throughout the story/series, nice graphic, depends, if it is action, for sure, needa be good, if it is fantasy, prefer good storyline, like mai-hime-mai otome, i am a great fan of them
background design: doesnt expect much, just make it pretty, don't make it so unique that i cant even handle(those backgrounds do exist, ok!)
soundtracks/melody: these include good opening songs, ending songs etc, normally, they are quite alright
characters' development: in most anime, characters do develop, but depends how much they develop and through wat circumstances.
nice graphic: mostly, my rates built during my first impressions, first impressions for me, about 7/10 i base on characters and graphic designs, if they are good, it will build a good impression in me, if they are bad, my impression of course will be bad, but sometime, graphics dont really matter, because its storyline and plots are just too good.
genre: i prefer fantasy most of time, hmm for example: full metal alchemist,mai hime,mai otome,haibane renmei, those kinds
uniqueness of the story: sometime unique can be top animes, wat i mean unique is that, it depends, sometime it is with good story line, as in real good, and sometime it is kinda crime-solving which drains up our brain to think like ghost in the shell of course

In my opinio, a good anime has to have:
1. a good design
2. fun
3. a good main story
i think these 3 factor together make a good anime..

For me it's gonna be Dragonball. dunno why but i LOVE it. i've seen all of it except GT, but ima downloading it. can't wait.

I feel that to properly appreciate any anime, I have to first understand what it's trying to excel in. Obviously, Azumanga Daioh for example, (probably) doesn't have the hardcore deep storyline of a Monster. But if someone watched Azumanga expecting to get Citizen Kane-type stuff out of it, they need to get slapped. But if Mr. "gonna-get-slapped" understands that Azumanga's main strength is in its light-hearted, silly, cute comedy, then he might actually enjoy it properly. (If he just plain doesn't like comedy period, then that's another story...)

There's no all-around "great" anime, of course, though there are some that are pretty close. Like some people who have posted, it needs to excel in whatever genre it's centered for, be it humor, action, romance, gore, etc. If it can mix genres, that's a plus, I believe. It should have effective animation for its genre, as well as music that accompanies it well. I'm a little opposed to already-composed music being recruited into an anime's opening or ending sequence, so it should have its own, unique compositions. Unique storyline to some extent, and unique characters that stray from the character stereotypes that are in almost all anime. The "greatest" anime series can catch anyone's interests somehow, be it someone who's interested in sword fighting or cute, poppy storylines.

A great anime, in my opinion, should have the following
- nice humour that makes people roll over the floor laughing
- great design of characters and graphics
- meaningful and touching
- creative storylines
- and great seiyuus!

Its just like Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, Air...etc...

Well, i guess a good anime will never be done ever, because it's just like you would say hey let's make the most awesome movie in the world and that will never happen... but in my opinion they should try to have a good design, the story should be great i mean lot of fun and action and there can be love too and to have good melodies i love a good ost when i hear it... ^^

A good Anime is veeery different from each Individual's personal point of view. I for example like Martial Arts Action and some spectacular Gun Fighting, and with a mix of Comedy in it....
