I been thinking lately about the reason i seem to be unable to find new anime to watch that would entertain me. I've come to one conclusion. The old anime series are alot better than the new ones coming out. Of course the new ones look better in quality, but lack everything else. Lately most the recent animes have no storyline, no plot, lack of good character development, etc. The old animes had more "stuffing." The old animes had good comedy, plot, development, etc. Not to be rude the MOST of the new series coming out are nothing but fan service. Sure there are some good ones coming out, but such a small amount is good.

I just want your opinion on the statement. Do you like the new ones coming out or the old ones? Give reasons to support your choice. Everyone has different preferences. Mine may be different from yours.

Depends where you look at it. Nowadays Anime is very popular so for a type of audience anything labeled as Anime is something they'd watch just because it's drawn and comes from Japan. Before it was so popular it kinda needed a reason to be either produced in the first place, or distributed to a wider audience, so they never thought of making pointless series with the only goal of being popular and make money (or maybe they did, but not as much as thy do now). I think there still are some pretty good shows but they might not be as popular and easy to find as the ones filled with fan-service like you say. And I don't think the new ones actually look better in quality, take a look at Akira for example, the flow in the movements and the attention to details makes it visually astonishing, specially when compared to some not-so-old Anime, like for example Elfen Lied.

Generalizing is never good and it's not a matter strictly of old vs. new, rather good vs. bad, independent of the time, what happens (or at least what I think it happens) is that Anime popularity has grown a lot, increasing the number of bad shows that are released but not the number of good quality Anime.

Yeah...being the big anime fan I am, I'm easily pleased by a lot of animes, but I've come across a few animes that I've watched that really pissed me off. Some animes didn't make much of an impact on me, and others totally blew me away. So right off the bat, my expectations for a good anime are pretty low...so prolly a lot of the animes I enjoyed (most of which are after 2000) you'll prolly hate.

If you know which companies made good animes that you've watched, you can try watching their newer animes. Gainax for example is famous for their NGE series, so why not try Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of the most popular ones right now, so I'd take a look at other animes Kyoto Animation has also made and watch those as well. If you want good stories and good animation quality with good music KyoAni's the wtg especially with Kanon, Air and Clannad. Then I looked into the original maker of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and found it was Noizi Ito and I figured I'd try some of her other series such as Shakugan no Shana and found that was extremely good as well.

Well that's just the way I find my animes, sometimes I look at my favorite voice actors and pick animes that they've been in. At least if you like the voice actor, you'll have some enjoyment watching their other roles, hopefully. That's my way of find good animes to watch, and sometimes my friend would recommend an anime and I'd totally hate it. Well for me, my expectations for a good anime is usually lower than others, but I've found older animes that totally pissed me off and new ones that totally piss me off, and vice versa. There're good and bad animes everywhere and as iroveashe has said, generalization is a bad thing, so just because something's new doesn't label it as bad. Try reading anime blogs out there and use Anime News Network to find new animes.

Hm... Both got good points. This is my point here. K, if you point it as old vs new then, of course you gonna say old. Why? Cuz, that's the anime that get you into the anime world. Not only in anime, but this includes other hobbies.

Bring new generation of people and shown them both "Urusei Yatsura ('81~'86)" and "Macross Frontier ('07~'08)". Now, I'm guessing 75% about people gonna say Macross is better. Each year, anime change their need for audiences. So that's why newer generation of fans like newer anime while older generation fans like old school anime.

Now, it goes same thing with good and bad anime. I, myself a fan of Original Macross, I think that, the original Macross is the best Macross ever! As result, bar was raised for next Macross series. Macross 2, 3, Plus, 7, Zero, Frontier and I didn't like Macross 3. BUT for someone who started watch Macross series from 3, they might say 3 was the best Macross ever! So this devabu keep going on and on.

So conclude my borning statement, anime is circle. It just keep going around and around. LOL

Most of the ideas had already been use in older animes.
the new ones would simply being seen as copying.
I'm not saying the new ones actually copies the old ones.
But that's my opinion.

I personally like both old and new anime series. The best old ones that I like are Tenchi Muyo, and Slayers, those were both good, I'm also glad that both of them are receiving updates. (Tenchi Muyo Ryo-ohki got a third series of ovas, and Slayers is receiving a new television show.) The new show that I like are Ikkitousen, Code gaess, Bleach, and Full Metal Alchemist, those were good. Still new or old, good anime is going to keep coming out and I can't wait to see.

Watching older series (80s and 90s) can be very refreshing! I suggest you to try the "Macross: do you remember love" movie if you haven't watched it yet, as a little intro. Even though it can be said that newer animes use the old stuff, there are a lot of old series that outmatch the new ones. How about Saber Marionette? it's not that old but it certainly has been a while. A very old movie I remember is Perfect Blue, although maybe you have watched all this stuff already.

Spudsy, your grasp on economics and geography appears tenuous. America may be headed toward recession but that doesn't mean the world is. Take China and Australia for example.

the recession that we are experiencing here is far from world-wide. part of it is due to the fact large companies are outsourcing. india's economy is skyrocketing. as hates mentioned china and australia are doing quite well also. the dollar is falling behind various nations in value.

your assertion that anime has sold-out is overused by you. you claim that of multiple things that are popular; new rock, many video games to name a couple. the truth of the matter is, that the genre is doing what everything does. it is changing and evolving to fit the world around it. the reason you don't like it is soley based on the fact that it's not within your comfort zone. it's the same reason that our parents don't like what we like and their parents don't like what they like. it's all a part of the generation gaps, that are separated due to the nurture aspect of growing up.

that aspect takes into account everything in a person's life, their entire surrounding. the surrounding for each generation is different so the products enjoyed by that generation are different. yes, some things will come out that you will like, but they will be target towards the audience that you fit in. the rest is targeted towards the audience of the next generation. it takes a truly open mind to appreciate multiple generations of entertainment, and few people truly have open minds, regardless of what they tell themselves.

FMA isn't that new, imo. Oct '03~Oct '04, so it's bit old anime. FMA became famous bit later in US than Japan, but gotta admit that it's bit old anime.

Like ecristy85 wrote, old animes are refreshing~~~! Ranma 1/2, Gundam 0083, Macross, & a lot more. But at time same time, it's awesome to see good graphic anime too. Macross Frontier, Xam'd, Real Drive & etc.

I seem to agree with the original post: the old anime had a lot more potency than this new stuff. I think most of the anime out today is watered down. It just seems they don't take the time like they used to. Some of my favorites were Tenchi, El Hazard, Love Hina, Evangelion, Blue Seed, etc. Most of the new stuff doesn't compare. Occasionally we'll strike gold with a few series like: Code Geass, Death Note, Gundamn SEED, etc. But, to me, a lot of the anime out right now is hit or miss. Thank God we actually have some "old faithful" types of anime like Naruto, Bleach and One Piece that deliver a semi regular fix while we're starving for other good anime titles to appear on the net.

New Animes re-used concepts of Oldie Animes. Example: Kanon and Clannad.

Another point: I hate most of japanese scripters, almost all fillers are awful!
I mentioning this, becuase some of the animes that come from a manga, they are transformed. Reason number 1 why I read more manga than watch anime.

I agree. Lately i have been reading more manga. Manga is definitely more interesting sometimes.

The thing about anime now is that it has gotten so popular that even if it has only an ok plot, all they have to do is sell it to the investors and the anime fans. This is also seen in games, and the reason is that when something gets popular you will start to see a large number of re-makes or just badly make similar things show up because every one wants in on the money.

I think that their are plenty of good anime coming out, you just have to test the waters and see what ones you like. Though my favorite is still Gundam Wing because it got me into anime.
