Tutorial for "de-texting" scans for wallpaper use?
1 Page: [ 1 ]
I've seen a number of scans in the gallery that originally came from a magazine or other print media and were buried under a ton of text submitted in their clean, text-free forms. How exactly is this done? I have a couple scans I'd love to wall, but text is making the task quite difficult.

You just have to simply recreate the bits that are missing.
I figured as much, but are there any techniques that make doing so less painful? Characters are usually easy, but soft, out-of-focus paint-style backgrounds seem like they'd be next to impossible.

Well, the only advice I can give you is that you'll need a bit of patience and a little artistic creativity for the hard-to-make-out parts. Sometimes I look at stocks to get ideas, or other scans of the character, to make sure I draw in their clothes correctly and all that.
Here's an example of something I did with a houden eizo scan, because the guy's big fat head was in the way of the image I wanted I had to draw the rest of her clothes in:

Maybe this will help, I can't really explain any better than that. I pretty much just follow the original lines, and kind of visualize how the missing parts should look, and go at it till I feel that it looks right.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. I'm just saying that at least in the pictures that I'm trying to work with, parts will be --really-- difficult to paint in and look seamless. I was planning to vector the characters (with a touch of soft CG shading) and use the cleaned-up version of the original background as a backdrop.
I might just have to repaint the entire background in order for it to all match -_-;
Nice work on that reconstruction, by the way.
