Should manga only be japanese???
First of, I looked to see if someone started a forum or not so if i missed it, sorry! Now to the matter at hand! Can American or other graphic novelests make anime? Its a highly disputed topic that so many disagree on. Why not? Why so? Should your liniage really be a factor in weather or not someone who is not of asian descent? Is an American physicly and/or psycologicaly unfit to create what we the consumers call manga? True that America has only recently adopted this style of art but that alone cannot be enough to simply discredit this and or any country.
Quite a few American artist have caught the eye of one of the most well known manga companies, TOKYOPOP which has recruted artists like Cristy Lejewski creator of RE:PLAY and NEXT EXIT, Felipe Smith creator of MBQ, and Corey Lewis creator or SHARKNIFE and PENG. Should these and others like them be shot down from the world of manga or should they express their right as artists to creat and express their thoughts as they wish?

Well that's a tough question to me I guess as long as the style is manga it should be considered manga. But if it's like the traditional American comic it should just be considered a comic. The reason is because it's just diffrent the art and the size. But as long it's written like manga it should be considered manga regardless of the writers nationality.
Well I would say, Manga is from Japan/Asia. If it is made in America or others it is a comic inspired by manga. I wouldn't classify it as real manga. Ofcourse they can draw (Americans etc.) but I wouldn't be all in to it.
In Japan, they call manga to any kind of comic, regardless it's country of origin or style.
I guess that as long as it fitted the style of story telling and graphic style of japanese manga, it could be called like that.
But still, there is some stuff produced in Japan, that doesn't look like your average manga at all, but's still being called manga, so...

Manga is japanese comic books. Comic books that don't come from Japan is not manga.
Manga should only be in Japanese, hence the word 'Manga'. Graphic novels created in other places should be called "Graphic Novels" not manga. Thats what I think at least.

Agreed. If American/Foreign "manga" creators were making manga, why do Americans call it graphic novels? Certainly, manga is meant to be a general title for comic in Japan, however, in the world as a whole, manga is meant to represent a certain style that originates from Japan. Even if Americans consider their work manga, by titling it "graphic novels", they are naming "manga" as their own title. Its like calling sushi "seaweed rice rolls" or something along those lines which completely ruins the cultural aspects of it. I'm not sure if what I said made sense, and maybe its not the American manga writer's faults, but all I know is that "manga" is becoming something different in America.
I never took a stand point befor but I personally think, why not? I mean its definantly manga influenced and if manga is just a japanese word for comic than it should never really matter at all because then it wouldnt matter either way what it was called, graphic novel or manga, which is just how I think about it. If you really want to call it a graphic novel, fine and manga is fine too. I took some American manga to school and was able to fool a classmate into thinking they were authentic japanese(this is a person who wishes they were japnese). So in conclusion same style, same concept, and an awsome story than it shouldnt matter what its called because it still ROCKS!
I thin that manga should be international but no that you think about it its a japanese thing..lol..so they came up with the idea first...lol...good for the props...lol...but eventually countries always translate mangas into their languages so its all good...lol..but manga should be made in english too so we could enjoy them too ...lets not be greedy now..lol

Well, I always thought that Japanese comics are manga. Why should American comics be called manga anyway? I don't quite see the point. Besides, it's convenient to have something distinctive to tell apart from different comics and Japanese comics. Imagine me having to tell my friends that I read Japanese comics (I'm lazy) or just "comics". Everyone would've graphic novels coming into mind immediately. Manga is short and easy to understand.

Exactly! Manga is a Japanese word. Naming it manga if made somewhere else would only imply that it's Japanese. I'm not saying that other contries can't make mangas too but you'll only send the message to people that it's from Japan. Like the sushi example from EchoWinD.

In essence, manga, comic, graphic novel-- they are synonyms. However, manga became the traditional word in other countries to describe comics that originated from Japan, and I believe it should stay that way. "Manga" might sound "fancier" than "comic," but it's ridiculous that the non-Japanese population want to call their works "manga" also; you're not Japanese, get over it. There is nothing wrong with your own region's word for comics!
If the whole wannabe-Japanese-comic aspect doesn't halt, we'll be going to bookstores to check out something like Marvel Manga. >___>
About the dumplings: Call them dumplings; it's the common English word for them and I doubt many but the Chinese would know 餃子. This might contradict the above statement about manga, but words evolve differently.

To me, as long as it is drawn in manga style, it is manga. Like avatar, you wont think it is manga but it is!

Japanese call them manga, the Chinese call them 漫画, the Korean 만화 or manhwa and the Americans comic books and graphic novels.
