Last December, Vista is officially launched by Microsoft. It makes many pros and contras within it, some of them say that Vista is a great futuristic OS that has a brilliant visual effect, and some say that Vista needs a very high specification and it's mean buck-sapper. I can see these thing in here(AnimePaper) too. There are many comment about it, and most of them is about the specification requirement and the package with it's price. Even there is a comment about the laptop's battery lifetime when using Vista, it said that the battery lifetime will halfed when we use Vista. ^^; For me, it's a great thing to have Vista, but for now, I will still use my XP, beside my computer specification is rather low(especially the processor and VGA@_@), there still many bugs in Vista, and the price of the part needed for Vista(RAM, Processor, VGA) is still high. I'll be waiting 1 year again to buy these requirement(last year I buy FX5200 with $200, last week I checked the price only $40 @_@).

Now, how is your opinion about it?

Also see this topic for opinions.

My statement on Windows Vista compared to XP is that it sure looks way better, but that it doesn't really add anything else than a slightly handier interface and smooth effects. In my opinion it's not worth the $200 or whatever a Vista Ultimate (if you're going to get Vista, get Ultimate, otherwise you'll defenitely get no big improvement of XP) costs.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind using the new OS, with DX10 and stuff. But I'll wait to buy it for sure.

Well its not only the money but in my opinion let others report bugs...
What i mean is that when a new OS comes out,users get it mainly to report bugs that the company missed and such things...These bugs take about a year or two to be fully fixed!So even if Vista was free I would not instal it for sure...I installed XP 1year and 4 months after release!Reason?Bugs...I waited for some 80+% of the MAJOR bugs to be fixed and then instal them.Ill do the same with Vista.In my opinion,do the same...

There have been many disturbing articles on the net about Vista's, actualy Ms's policies implemented in Vista. Simply put they make it sound like Vista is some big Spyware-Bot thingy as far as ensurance to MS that you got it legit is concern.

Anyawy I saw what it can do. IMO you shouldn't worry about the bugs but the compatability, sure it runs alsmost everything usefull and safe you can run in Xp but it's got problemes.

And as far as I can tell looks are all it's got. (well it is true that some major vulrnabilities have been fixed, but I don't feel very exited)

I see no reason to use Vista, if it for the looks (the Aero skin, which comes only with Home Edition Plus and above if I'm not mistaken) then I've seen versions of linux and addons for linux that beet vista, altho not as tidy.

Looks like we are same in thinking ^^. Me too, I've bought XP after 2 years of it's launch. I hate the bugs that still haunt me if it just released. About Vista, I've heard that the number of bugs that still remain in Vista is about 300++ @_@, and that will make me wait until the number is decreased.

About the Linux, looks like it has beaten Vista, I like Linux especially because it's free. But I still confused when using it, especially when setting up the internet connection through a DSL cable. I've confused too when setting up the DSL connection on Vista. In Vista, setting up an internet connection isn't so simple as in XP. When tried the Release Candidate 1, I've spent 1 hour to set up the DSL connection. @_@. Maybe Vista is only win in the start menu(for me, it's cool, not waste spaces beside the start menu ^^) and it's games. The other maybe has been beaten by the other OSs like you said Linux. Well, that's still enough for me, and I'll still buy Vista 2 years later. ^^ Waiting for the termination of major bugs.

My opinion: why would I like to get an operative system that has only a ultra-smooth (and unnecessary) interfase and does practically the same thing XP does, but demanding more system resources?

Not really interested in Vista for now.

Thats always smart and its what I do also I mean when beta or new versions apear its best to wait a little time that they´re in the market so al the mayor bugs get corrected and its not only with computeres its with almost everything from TVs to videogames also, and besides prices tend to drop very fast

Be it that I was a bit of a beta tester for Vista, I hated it. I didn't run into any major bugs, but I found an annoying one during the beta phase (which I'm sure was fixed for RTM). There's no real improvements with Vista besides making some of the interfaces harder to navigate and having to deal with a ton of pop-ups just to run a single EXE file. Heck, some of the more popular games may not even run on Vista, like the Battlefield series and I've heard Halo didn't work either. The Aero style is crap, sorry to say. But seriously, it really is and I don't want to look at it again. The sidebar is next to useless, even though it had a couple useful gadgets on it, but that's what it was all good for. The motion desktop (some of you may have heard of it), is more than likely going to run up your system resources even further than the Aero Glass does. I can't test this out since Vista no longer works on my system for some unknown reason.

Also, to point out, no one is going to buy a whole new computer just to support Vista's insane requirements. The bare minimum may just run out your wallet pretty quickly. And the $250 asking price for Ultimate just isn't really worth it for now. Sure, my system that I hope to build will support Vista, but there is no way I'm going to put that OS on there, one for the bugs that could creep up, and two, since I don't feel like messing with it's security settings to make those pop-ups to run a single EXE file that will quickly drive me up the freakin' wall 10 times over just to shut them up. (yes, they are that annoying)

In other words, I don't like Vista, it's just not worth it, and it could tick a lot of people off very quickly. (dang that was a lot to say for one OS...)

You can think like that for now, but you can see like the Windows 98 in the present day. They looks so conservative, right? As same like several years later, the XP will looks like a conservative's OS and the interface is looks bad if it compared with Vista several years later. ^^

Maybe about the complexity, Vista has more than XP, and like you've said the Vista always ask the allowance of a program to be executed. That instance is only present in the beta and release candidate 1 version. It make sure that you know all the application that executed when you use it. About the game, you can use the program compatibility wizard. It's not included in the beta version of Vista, but included in the RC1 Vista. It can make the program runs like in the XP and no error. About the computer's upgrade, well maybe it give you a high requirement, but that will be the same as the 98's era. 98 just need 128MB memory and only 500MB hard disk, but the XP needs 512MB RAM, the same case, right? ^^

While 512MB RAM is recommended for running XP, it's not required. The bare minimum for running is 256MB. On top of this, XP doesn't have any real video card requirements, meaning that computers with crappy "integrated graphics" or really low-end graphics cards could run XP just fine. This is not the case for Vista - it requires both a buttload of RAM AND specific (and expensive) high-end graphics cards that support DirectX 10. A HUGE number of people will just have to chuck their old PC just to be able to run Vista.

Now I direct you to the system requirements for Mac OS X Tiger, which already includes almost all the interface effects and goodies that Vista adds. Here are its requirements, which are rather meager in comparison to Vista:

Apple's Mac OS X Website

* Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4, G5, or Intel-based processor
* Built-in FireWire
* DVD drive for installation
* 256MB of RAM
* 3GB of available hard disk space

Linux with XGL, which provides a good amount of what Mac OS X offers, has similar requirements, except it requires a graphics card with at least 64MB VRAM.

This proves that Vista really doesn't need such extravagant system resources to provide a nice interface; MS simply fails at efficient programming.

I'm running vista business

User based Local security policies = teh win
UAC .. annoying while installing stuff it's actually a good thing. (kinda the wannabe equivalent of sudo)
TCP stack is more robust / faster. (compared to XP)
IPv6 works better (had some funky weird shit on XP and 2003)
RDP 6x rocks

It runs smooth on my laptop.

1.73 GHz Mobile Pentium M
1.5 GB / 2.5" 100GB 7200Rpm hdd

Memory management seems to work better yeah it vista uses more space .. but compared to XP it's used more efficient..
Hell CS3 (beta) feels to run smoother than on XP

It took 39 minutes to install .. but +4 hours to make it work like I want. <g>
The new File Explorer stinks, but I use total commander as my "explorer" so it's not a big problem.

I always find it amazing that peeps pay a shitload of money for hardware but don't want to pay for a OS that they will use every day for multiple years.
As administrator having to maintain a company network ... I'm pretty happy with it.

Welcome to 2007 people...

Have Vista Ultimate on my box right now, and I like it quite a bit, though I have run into some software incompatibilities, which I'm sure will be ironed out over time. Nothing deal-breaking though.

Well, people have their opinions on Vista. I just don't like it because it's really not much of an improvement to be honest... I'll probably be waiting until MS can really find a way to impress me somehow, since I am a tough nut to crack.

Vista doesn't really impress me but also doesn't unimpress me, i know i'll eventually get it because most games and software is going to be made around Vista, I plan to maybe wait like half a year or so before i get vista to maybe test it or see if there are any major problems, till then XP is great ^^
