Battle Angel Alita SECOND WALL :D
2 years 11 months ago
So.. As you know the very first manga I read was Battle Angel Alita named Gunnm in french...
And as I saw there was so few BAA walls I decide to create an other one...
So yeah I extract the character from one of my scan and I need some advices about the quality.. Do you think I need to vector it or I can clean it?
I did a nice work about extraction even if it's not quiet perfect...
Yes it's gonna be a scenic wall AGAIN! :D But this time it's gonna be brighter...

Thanks for the help in advance! ^_^
As you can see the book had a line on the left part of the scan and let a darker space I tried to correct... Is this correcting way good looking enough? (only for the parts that are finished! :D)
I'm sorry it looks more like a scrap than a start for a wall paper... But I wanted to show to my devils I was working! :D

Clean it :) not to sure about vectoring, don't have that much experience with that, imo you would lose to much details of that extraction.
Actually if you keep her to the left of the wall & exclude the cut part from the wall then it wont show. since the scan is quite big, i think cleaning it would be enough as shrinking it would make errors less obvious but im not too sure. anyway her legs dont look like the rest of the scan...it's a lot less detailed than the other parts. i hope this helps. haha im not very good with such things. better wait for the devils' grand entrance.

This is the background I'm working on... It's just a desert by night... But I can't find some so I work on a day view adding some filters and layer colored in dark blue and grey...
I know the scan is kind of messy on the legs but in fact it's only because, in the scan, she's in a sand storm. I'm gonna work on it after getting a better background... But I'm wondering if I shouldn't add something on the right side...
I was also wondering about the lighting on the character... I need to get it darker that's for sure... But I need to play around a bit to find the nicest way to get it fine...
To be continued! :)
Woah, the background is waay to filtered
to be good.
and the colors don't match the scan =s definitely
go look for a beter one or make one yourself using the same
color scheme as the scan.
I think what you should do first is to clean the scan, the
quality is pretty bad all over, it's too grainy and a bit blurry
at the same time (wierd combination o.O ).
work on the scan first, then worry about the background...
that's my best advice...
good luck~! ^.^d

Change BG defenatelly!i see you started walling and cant help it:P
Hi zazou! second wall =D yay for another try by you.
this scan will need vectoring... there is just too much fuzziness and partial loss, even in outlines, for cleaning to make its quality acceptable. vectoring would be the way that i'd choose because i just don't see how various blurring and layering will fix up the quality problems this image has. as well, you can vector in the lack of details on her legs so that you can choose whether or not to have a sandstorm in your wall rather than being forced to come up with an explanation of why her legs lack details.
and the downfall of filtering to get rid of realism is that it looks filtered...and you've set up an obstacle for yourself by choosing to do a night time desert wall. why? first off, the lighting is a problem. how bright should the character be made to fit in with the bg but still be bright enough to see properly? that's a difficult question to answer. and secondly, she is in a yellow sandstorm in her original scan and she's wearing a yellow cape and because of that, she has an overall yellow tone. trying to fit her into a dark blue/red/purple bg will require some work.
we are rooting for you =) work hard and bow before our (melly's and mine, wherever meely is) devilishness. >xD *evil laughter*

LOL
The scan has been accepted on AP so I assume it's not THAT bad quality.. If you read the first thread I was wondering if I should vector it or not... Anyway the scan takes place in a sand storm so the blurriness is wanted for the picture... And so the grainy look too... :D
About the background I'm just playing around and trying to get a good night view over a stock picture.
Yes I filtered a lot to get smooth curves... I'm gonna put on more textures later to hide it and make the sand look better... I have a lot of stock pictures of desert and I'm wondering... As I think to vector my character... What about vectoring a background for it?
Yakushi you should know who your talking with! :D lol
Of course I'm a young waller and you know it... But as usual I'm posting my wall step by step... I have a record to keep! :D
But anyway I need to know about the vector or not... And also about the way to transform a day view in a night view...

Took a look on the walls and the start is ok. But as cheche the BG its not top yet.
SCAN:
The scan should be vectored, but i liked the texture it has. But again i think it's to blurry. And the extraction isn't the best. Get familiar with the pen tool for best result if you are using photoshop or a program with the function.
BG:
Actually the sand in the desert looks to real, lol. Actually the sand in a desert is bit soft blue/grayish if the moon is up, so i think you should add one. I had a sweet tutorial for that, will try to pick it up and it's really simple, so if you don't use photoshop but are familiar with the software you use i think it should be ok. If you add a moon it should be on the same side as the scan to make the shading easier. And for the mountain thing i think this tutorial would work, except you use desert colors and a different shape ^^ and make it smoother. This would work if you have the smudge tool in your software.
If you vector and doe the moon thing, the shading will be that some light on the sides of the scan, not the whole scan cuz it would look stupid:P
Hope this helps^^

I´m joining to vector supporters. And If I may say you should vector the BG, too.
Well seems the record in the thread length will be beaten soon =)
Keep struggling as you know it zazou and it will be great I believe that.
Waitng for another version(or sets of versions? =))

Well I guess I'm gonna start practice on a vector first... Cause I'm getting used to the pen tool but I still only did one vector for now.. And it was an easy one without outlines... This one is gonna be SO MUCH harder... I'm gonna practice first on an other scan I did and was rejected... I want to vector it and submit it as a scan...
So you'll see my progress on that if you want... But I'm gonna let the idea for this wall on a side for the moment... Practice is GOOD! ;)
But thanks anyway for all your attention! Seems like I'm getting a lot more comments than others threads! :blushes:
Thanks a lot to you all...
The scan I'm working on will be submitted on this thread as soon as I get it done for the first version... But here is the scan refused...

I know it's not as complicated as the scan I need to clean but it's much more complicated than the blade I did ^_^
PS : thanks a lot for the tutorial!! I'll use it as soon as I get the scan vectored.. Probably in two weeks! LOL ^^

I just found this thread. (I really need to get better about randomly popping in on SZ, I really do.)
erm, you might actually wanna try something a little easier to vector your first time around, that hair is gonna kill you!
I've always found it easier to vecot screencap rather than manga pics, but some people are absolutely amazed at that, so I guess that's just personal preference, I like them cuz the colors are already there, the lines are already there, and you just have to trace. but, meh, whatever.
basically all I'm trying to say is you might have a bit of trouble with that being your first vector cuz it's so detailed. honestly you'd be better off for your first vector trying to do something like charlie brown or something along those lines, just to get the hang of it. (and yeah, I realize it's not *technically* your first vector, but you know what I'm trying to say.)
remember when you vector to outline using shape layers, otherwise it will be rejected, but asa is the one to ask about that, I'm not really good at that yet.
as for your original scan, it looks like it has been re-sized, to be honest, maybe if you kept it the original size/or shrink it a little bit, you could get away with cleaning and you wouldn't have to vector. there are just a lot of artifacts in it as is.
and next time you start a thread in SZ, you need to PM me, cuz I hardly ever drop by anymore. (shame on me)

Okay mom Melly... I'll tell you if I get a new thread... But in fact I like this picture better cause I don't have any outline to shape... Cause on my Corel (DON'T HIT ME!!) I still have some troubles making nice outlines... No It's not really true... I just never did some ^_^ Or just one and it looked OK...
But I don't really feel like it's that hard... For now I'm only working on the white parts at the bottom... And you know... Now that I extract all my characters with the pen tool... I get really use to making shapes... And even on HUGE scans... So I guess it's gonna take me a while... But it's not impossible..
But sure I wanna do some vector in color screen crap! :p I have some gangutsu picture I wanna take! :p
But anyway, thanks a lot for all the support you bring me :)

You know, if you don't feel like pirating photoshop, there's always GIMP. I've heard it works really well, but I've never used it.
How about trying inkscape? it's free & also has something like pen tool but i think it's easier to use. well actually i havent used the one in photoshop so cant really compare but everyone else seems to be saying that it's difficult to handle.
as for the night desert:
