This wallpaper captures the urban essence that proliferated the art of Ghost in the Shell in every incarnation of the series. Phill does an amazing job of capturing a moment of surrealism.

While there are a few, stray building angles and shadows, you find that your eye forgives the minor details and instead focuses on the overall scene that is larger than life, with lights trailing off into infinity.

that's the link. I really liked the scan, i thought mizuho's obsession with pochy was fascinating, but, anyways, i was trying to make a background for this, and since i'm fairly new, i was browsing tutorials for different sorts of backgrounds, and i found this one for those retro dots. i tried it and it looked pretty good, but i feel it needs more. Any suggestions? I mean, right now, i feel ok about it. Like, i tried it as my wallie, and i liked it, i was just wondering what you people thought, and any suggestions for something else, or adding to this as it is.

Yup it's a cute scan!

The scan extraction needs work - the bottom edge of her leg, her foot, and the cushion are not well extracted, and probably need to be redone since it looks like some of the outline of the cushion got removed already. The ret of the edges are ok.

There is artifacting in the scan, quite a lot of blocks visible particularly in the shadow parts of her thighs. Perhaps you have saved your wall at too low quality, or if the artifacting is inherent to the scan, you should clean that up with some brushing/smudging. Quite a bit of noise in her flesh and dress as well.

Conceptually the wall is pretty blah - you should try to add something more to it. Retro dots are cool and all, but the background lacks interest. A few ideas come to mind:
- cast her in a pochy commercial (funny)
- have a few sticks of pochy in the background - like on the real pocky box
- go the whole hog and mimic a real pocky box, red, with white sans-serif text and curved white stripe. "Onegai" should probably substitute nicely for "Glico" but you'll need to find a good font. You can probably think up something funny to substitute for the flavor and slogan, too.

I thought about that (pochy commercial), but i wasn't sure if anyone would like it. Oh yeah, i noticed the part of the pillow missing, but i forgot about it, (it's missing because i took off a shadow, but i was gonna put it back in).

The artifacting in teh scan... I don't see any, but i'll do a once over just to make sure. Oh wait, i see what you mean, yeah, i'll clean that up. Yeah, the scan was like that, so, i'll work on it.

So, yeah, i think i'll work on the pochy commercial. maybe the pochy in the background, perhaps the latter suggestion too. You know what, i'll try all three, and post 'em later. Hows that sound?

The scan is cute, but the background is kinda bleh, doesn't really fit the scan imo. extraction needs some work (i can still see some blacklines around the top of her head.

all i really suggest is a different background, other than that, not a bad start =)

keep working at it

The scan is great but the background and its color don't really fit the scan, but I really like hamster's ideas.

Whew, well, i've been working off and on for about 3-4 hours on cleaning up that scan. It needs a LOT!! of work. I mean, the entire thing is choppy, i just didn't realize it before. Heh, and the shadow that i put back in is really bad, so i'm trying to color it black without messing up her leg/foot and the pillow. Since i've only had paint before, it's taking some getting used to. However, my new best friend is CLONE STAMP!! With him, I've been able to, so far, clean up about... let me think...maybe 45% of the image? so, yeah. Hmm, and i've decided to the Pochy box, but if i get better, at a later time, i'll do a pochy commercial in like a bedroom. Oh, and do you think i should keep the retro spots, anyone? just like, way toned down, and a different color (like blue or green?), i like 'em, and in a test run against a pochy box it looked fine, but, i don't know if it's too much. Well, i'll shut up now. Thank you all for your comments, everyone. This is my first serious attempt at a wallie, so i've really appreciated all your helps and suggestions!

Yeah, clone is really useful. But for the pillow shadow part, wouldn't it be easier to paste back the orginal and redo the cleaning, more carefully this time to keep the outline? It's usually easier than trying to paint it right yourself.
Hang on to the retro spots for now, so you can try it with and without the spots later, when the pocky box background is done... my instincts say no, but no harm trying for comparision!

Oh, the shadow. NO, yeah, i pasted it back, but i only didn't like it because it is a horrible shade of grey that is beyond repair... So, i'm trying to repaint it black. It's going really well, so far. Well, i just have to finish cleaning her dress and face, and then the pillow, and finish the shadow. Not that much, i got a lot of it done already. Then I just have to do the Pochy background. Well, once again, thanks for all your help! Awesome, i'll tell ya how i'm doin' once i'm done cleaning the scan!!

The background is okay, but a little busy for my taste. :) The scan is adorable though.

I think the original was alright, but too simple, it was definately lacking something.
The Pocky box idea is really cute, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!!
good luck! :)

Yep, going good. I'll stop posting after this until i'm done!! Um, yeah. I'm actually ok with the color of the shadow, so, i'll probably just clean it up. Hmm, i am having a problem, though, with the curved line for the background. It's a n00b problem, i know, but still, i'm having a hard time doing it, and i don't know why. Cuz, even in MSPaint, there's a way to curve a straight line, but i can't find a way to do it in Photoshop. Is there a way to do it? Plz help me with this... Hmmm, and do any of you think i should put some pocky sticks in the background?

The circles background sorta hurt the eyes a bit. Maybe a different color other than white sould help. like a darker or lighter shade of the same color.

You might want to explore using vectors for the curve; would be good to take a picture of an actual box and trace over it to get the shape exactly right. That is, if you've got Illustrator. If not, you can always do it in MSPaint or whatever, and paste it in as another layer - but make sure you do it big enough - if you size up from a smaller image bad stuff happens.
