I quite like the starfield for a bg^^...
tho it would have been nicer if his hair wasn't cut off... or it could have been better if you had position him to the right side instead so the cut off doesn't look weird...
overall, for your first wallpaper... its good^^

Nice try, but cosmic starfields and Ed aren't the ideal match. It's the sort of wall I expect for a Gundam character or something else associated with deep space :P Why not try it with a different portrait?
Really good for a first. I think you should work on the long part of his hair. If you're going to cut it off you should try to make it "fade" away more. It just looks like a small fade but then it gets cut off.(the straight line is noticable). And you should try cutting his hair out better. On the right side you can see some white parts sticking out.
But anyway great job. it's your first and I'm impressed. Keep it up! :D

The edge of the scan is visible - both hair and his shoulder get shopped off.
You can draw them in using the pen tool - it's basically the same technique as 'vectoring' in photoshop, so you can probably find some tutorials. You should be able to find plenty of ed scans to use as reference material for how the shoulder/hair should look.

The wall is good for a first wall. just work on making the fading of Ed's hair look more natural, maybe add some light there or something to cover it up. But really this is a nice first wall, especially for the extraction.
