Would You buy a 2D game on a new console ?
Basically if a 2d game came out on Ps3 - Xbox or Wii would you buy it?
and im not talking that lame cellshaded bullcrap,...
pure pixelized or hand drawn cells, animating your characters and backgrounds like the games of yore...
would you or wouldnt you want to play it and why?
Is 3d that special, and do the fancy graphics really make for a more enjoyable game...?
and finally imagine if they put as much effort and time into making a 2d game as they do a 3d one, Animating every scene in spectacular detail,...
Personally I think they stopped making 2d games becasue there was this preconcieved notion that no one would buy one on a newer system,...
lets see if thats true or not shall we..

Whether the game was 2D or 3D, my decision wouldn't be influenced unless this design decision impacted on the gameplay. The demise of 2D was largely at the hand of Sony who refused publishing licenses for titles that didn't show off the 3D capabilities of the original Playstation. Aside from that there has always been a trend to move to more realistic graphics as time progresses.
Some designs are intrinsically 2D and work better that way. Others require the 3rd dimension of freedom to work. Either way the graphics should ultimately be a means of delivering the intended gameplay experience.

I'd buy 2D games. The last piece of sprite artwork I've played on a console has to be Symphony of the Night, which, ironicially, is at the top of most PS1 gamer's list of good games, despite the fact that Sony was not a big fan of 2D. I'd also buy Super Paper Mario for the Gamecube as well.
When 3D came around, the folks in marketing suddenly believed that 2D wouldn't sell. To some extent, they were right, because 3D really was the new thing at the time. Sadly, in most companies marketing has a lot more say in the games that are made than the developers.
2D games are also generally cheaper to make, and with rising costs in game development, I'd be nice to see some more cheaper, quality games (like Alien Homonid) out on store shelves.

I would deffinetly buy a 2D game. 2D games have that little extra charm that is lost with the transition to 3D.
As long as NIS keeps making great 2D games, I'll keep buying them.

Graphics i don't care about as long as its playable. The story is more importaint so as long as its got a good story and good character as well as a few other things then yeah i would buy a 2D game.
For me graphics help the games alot, and buying a 2d game would be like buying an old snes game again.
Depends, really. FPS in 2D... definitely not. RPGs, action, and adventure games would probably be the only ones I'd buy. Even then, I like the realistic environment that 3D is capable of offering.

Graphics are near the bottom of the qualities I look for in a game. Developers tend to focus more on the graphics nowadays sadly, so gameplay is often ignored. The most important aspect of a game is whether it is FUN, not whether or not it looks real. If I want something realistic, I'll walk outside.
If the game is good then yeah I would buy it. It shouldn't matter if the game is 2D or 3D.
As long as those games are good, gameplay and visual-wise, I don't mind if they're in 2D.
Actually, 2D may reach a higher level in the next-gen consoles. 128bit generation could hardly afford to support high resolution sprites and effects (see Guilty Gear), so I think it's possible to see even more complex (animation and detail wise) 2D sprites and effects on the new systems.
Of course, developers should realize this first :/

I've already "bought" Geometry Wars on Xbox 360's live arcade,
the game is great!, very simple but still a great game, addictive and hard enough to keep your nerves on all time.
check this video and you'll understand hehe

Unfortunately, many casual gamers and idiots nowadays believe that better graphics = better gameplay, which cannot be further from the truth. The genius of games like Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Contra 3, Castlevania etc will never be truly realized because unless produced for a handheld, they'll most likely suffer from low sales and such, even if the reviews recieved are extremely praising. Also, the conversion from a 2D series to 3D isn't always smooth. The 3D Castlevania games pale in comparison to their 2D counterparts, for example.
I just hope that with the more powerful handhelds we have today, more of the old games we know and love will be ported to them.

I love 2d fighters, I play Street Fighter on my Xbox, 3rd strike is awesome. also play Street fighter 2 in the Street Fighter Anniversary collection. I also have King of Fighters 2002 on my Xbox. But yeah it really depends on the game. Graphics and dimensions aren't everything.
If its new 2D Catlevania & Suikoden game that is like from PS1 then YES!
Doesn't matter, although I would slightly prefer 2D due of the fact that 3D has become all about eye-candy. With the modern hardware, 2D could also step into the modern age with high-resolution (1280x+) and high-detail graphics. Not to forget the true, surround sounds and fully thought out mechanics. And still even a slightly older machine would be able to play it smoothly.
