I am not really satisfied with the looks of the characters faces, neither do I have any ideas how to improve them / make them fit with the clothes/hair.
Any suggestions?

Its not just the faces ^^" .. you should really try to look for a better scan .. this one is just too pixelized , and not clear .. just lose the scan or vector it if you can .. and dont outline it -.- .

Well the BG say:"don't look at the scan look at me", and does not fit with the scan.
the scan is also very bad, so i think it would have been rejected if you had a good BG with this scan.
and i do not sense anything Christmas about this wall. and the text is also bad.
i think you should find a different scan and a new BG.

Hm. I couldn't find a better scan, actually this is the original scan... kinda scattered and stuff, so I edited it (imho my version doesn't look that bad :/)
Sadly, i have no clue about vectoring, but I will look for tutorials and will try to learn it :]

Since it's a scan from a manga, vector it. I find it really hard to vector manga scans, so you're on your own there XD.
I'll change the scan, is too much pixeled

You should improve the vector...its kind strange, or you can make the extraction better...anyway here are 2 turorials...try the vector its always better and its prettyer

And the bg...the idea is nice but the colored glow is too blurryed...and those 2 black lines dont fit with the colors... try making something that matches them and the bg.

Hmm i really want to finish what i started, thats why i asked for the skin...
gotta search for a nice skintexture tutorial...
as bg i am looking forward to use a real picture with a snowy location or something...
