action anime with good story and artwork

Which animes do you think have good storyline, some action/violence, and nicely dawn characters (yeah, pretty shallow but the reason i got into anime was because they feature better looking characters, in my opinion, than western cartoons).
Mine (i didn't watch too many): DN Angel, Gundam Seed/Destiny, Fate/Stay night.
I think Dr.Gray Man (i think thats what it's called) would fit as well, but i haven't watched it.

Well, Shakugan no Shana is a good action anime with good artwork.
Fate Stay Night, too have a good storiy and artwork.
Bleach is packed with good story and full of action battle, but the artwork isn't really something.

RahXephon for action and story and +mecha. Try Argento Soma, im up to episode 6 and i do really enjoy the storyline not much else.
Eureka7 good animation, storyline is decent and lots of action.

Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist and Naruto have good storylines and lots of action too.
And you can also try Full Metal Panic if you're into Mecha stuff.
And if you want action in a different sense, say mental action, then I would recommend Death Note.

Last Exile was freaking beautiful! The race scenes had me on the edge of my seat!
Final Fantasy VII Advent Children was also gorgeous, but if you don't know much about Final Fantasy the plot may leave you confuzzled.
I've only seen the first Ghost in the Shell movie, but I would recommend it. Wonderful action scenes with some interesting philosophy as the main character (a cyborg) questions her humanity.
Samurai Champloo had some lovely swordfights, and Cowboy Bebop had a killer soundtrack that made the action sequences so much better.
Oh! Ergo Proxy! Can't forget that. There wasn't action in every episode, but when there was, it was good.
Those are my favourites, though there are others. Bakuretsu Tenshi was pretty, but the plot was rather lacking. FLCL was amazing in many ways, but the anime is rather dated. Texhnolyze had some great stuff in it, but you had to wait until the tenth ep to get to it. My HiME was good, if you don't mind the emotionally - charged teeanged girls who drive the plot.

Well... with some action you have naruto, bleach and fullmetal alchemist of course, FF7 advent children have a lot of action in it and is very beautiful, but it's not really an anime, gundam seed is good as well (I haven't see GS destiny, so I can't speak about this one)
you have to see the full metal panic series (the second raid included, fumoffu is just for the fun, not action in it) it's really good^^
fate stay night is very good as well and very beautiful too
you should see death note (for the storyline, no fights), and if you want some violence why not elfen lied.

I think that FMA had good story and action but the artwork could be better, I would've preferred Galaxy Angel like artwork (>.<). Sister princess had also pretty good artwork (i never saw the anime but ive seen some images, probaly anime's artwork is crappier) but sister princess's story and action seems really crap. Gundam seed's art was really good although they used the same frames over and over. I could list so many more good artwork but cant think of any now.

I would have to say your best choice is Full Metal Panic! Great storyline, some romance, well-developed characters, and lots of violence performed in numerous methods!

Yes, D.N. Angel is good and so is Gundam Seed/Destiny (watched 3 of them and loved it), but to be honest the Fate/Stay Night series would have been actually good the best if...
Shirou ended up with Saber...
no that was what you think i'd say? no...that totally wrong
I think that it sucks that a girl like Saber liked a guy like Shirou. (period)
Hey, if i could at least see a little resemblance of archer to Shirou, then WAAAY, they would be perfect, but damn Shirou is like Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuutsu, JUST LIKE ANY SHONEN ANIME!! Its always the loser, plain, nothing spectacular guy, ending up with one of the hottest/cutest anime girl you can see.
Hey, im a guy, so you cant say i hate ugly guys ending up with pretty girls. Its just that im bored of THAT kind of plot. And im especially bored of Harem type anime that have loads of pretty girls fighting for an ugly guy (Da Capo, Maburaho, Love Hina and a loads of other that i think are 5|-|17)

A good history also is important, very important
Full Metal Alchemist and Bleach are among the most recent ones. Great animation backing intricate stories with memorable characters.
Vandread, though a year-2000 anime, the animation is superb and the story is really played out well. Great ending and a good mecha anime all around.
Outlaw Star is also a must to watch in terms of story and background. The animation isn't as clean as your recent titles but its still stand on its own as being great. It's several years old, but an unforgettable title.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya doesn't have a whole lot of battle scenarios but judging on Yuki and Ryoko's battle (one of the highlights in the whole series), if the directors decided to put more of those scenes in the show would hit #1 in action intensity. Definately a show to pick up on release or just watch off Youtube or something. It's got a mix of comedy, philosophy, action and mystery and a little subtle romance here and there. This show isn't your standard run-of-the-mill hits...so expect suprises.

Mezzo DSA i would have to say was a pretty good action anime, decent story, albeit more so episodic and nice artwork
