Just started college
I just started and and lots of work pressure came on me really quick. i am taking computer sience as my major nut i think i wana change it. May be architecture who knows. but anyways i was wondering for any advice to get me through college . maybe other new people will learn something to.
I just started my second year in a community college, I am going to transfer to a university next year for mechanical engineering.
My first year of college, the things that I wish I knew before hand and besides other very important things is that:
One, READ THOSE PAPERS THAT THE PROFESSOR GIVES YOU ON YOUR FIRST DAY OF CLASS, the once that describe the course, the grading and everything else.
Second, is that if you taking any math classes find the math lab the second day of class and go there as much as you freaking possibly can, because it WILL help you to get a good grade in that class.
Three, (and these don't necesserely go in any order or importance) is to always do your work on time and study as many hours a day you can take without going crazy.
Four, most important one is to not be affraid, or be stressed, or be worried. This one is realy overlooked, because even if you have a deadline that is tommorow and you forgot, or (this is where I excidently delleted a large portion of my post). Ok am just don't overreact, and don't be taking it too easy, because the load will come at you quike. also, always check the deadlines, and know your teacher's email address and etc...
Good luck! and try to make some friends that are not idiots or into the "get drunk so that you can be in my club" kind of friends, because they end up making you get kicked out of college, and other things.

Oh yeh I forgot that one!!!
A lot of changes are taking place when you start college, I agree with you on that !
The thing that helped me when I first started university was to have a friend. Someone I can talk to anytime and about anything, just to feel that I'm not alone (I was leaving on campus and the university is another city than my parents' and friends one) and that I'm supported by someone close to me.
It is important to focus on your studies, but remember that it is never very good to think only about that. Try to have some nice time and to put aside studies problems once in a while. Try to do some sport or join some clubs. Associative life is important in university, it helps you meet different people and build your personnality.
I think that if you are learning what you really like in university, this helps you a lot going through the pressure and the stress that you encounter, because you are having a set goal that you'll be trying to reach no matter how !
Never procrastinate !! The rythem of university work is different from high school work load, so try to be always ahead of time on your schedule and to prepare and review things in advance, so that you won't find yourself burried under tons of papers, homeworks, exams... And if you forgot something, there is noreason for you to panic !! That won't help you at all!
Err... what else ?? yep yep... don't be chosing the wrong kind of guys to hang with... You know what I mean. Remember that you are at university to study and have fun doing it, not to have fun only. You'll encounter many excentric people who are going to university to be far from parental control or something like this... these are fool people (most of the time) they want to have fun and try to drag people in their depravation... so act wisely and learn to understand people and to know them.
That's a lot of talk... I'll stop here... for the moment :p

Very good advice gat :c)
i don't know what computer science courses you could be taking in the very begining that would be overwhelming you. usually the first courses are introductory and low-level, so they should be easy, atleast the ones for your major. of course that may be just me, but if you are having trouble, find a tutor. most places offer you help either for free or at reasonable rates.
i could even help gat, but i don't think he would need it

Thanks thats alot of good advice .
I just started college also after working for a year from graduating high school. On the first day I already find myself having to do a load of reading. The classes are boring and the lectures are long but hopefully I can make it through.
My boyfriend is in Computer Science. Its really freaking hard.. A whole lotta coding and stuff..and trying to just make a game is really frustrating. But if you can deal with then go for it.
I am in photography major right now. There alot of stuff that is required for that course. Got your camera, solution, negatives, paper, and other stuff..
So I might change it to biology. I don't think you need to buy alot of stuff for a biology major.

Hey! I think most of them have hit the major points..it's all really good advice. I'm a junior in a Science Education major at a university..and the best advice I can give is get into study groups because studying with more people makes things easier and they might know things you dont.
Also, dont hesitate to ask the teacher or the Teacher Assistants for help..thats why they get paid, and even if you gotta be a bit of a pest, it's your education so you have that right (can't stress that enough)!!
Do your best, don't get too wild, and I'm sure you'll do fine!

I'm just about to start my second year at university, I'm studying Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
1) Make sure you sort out lecture notes as soon after lectures as possible, don't just stick them on a random pile. It's a real pain to find notes you need if you don't file stuff properly. Best to buy a folder for each module you take, this way it's easier when you come to revise and do coursework.
2) Do coursework and other assignments as soon as you can, don't leave them to the last minute. You do not want to be programming all night when the coursework is due.
3) As you will be doing a large amount of work on computers, always make sure to back everything up.
If you are having doubts about whether you picked the right course, you should go and see someone as soon as possible to talk it over. If you do want to change to a completely different subject, the longer you leave it the harder it will be. Not only to change, but to get into the different course as you may miss the basics.
That said you should probably give it a few weeks to see how it goes.
Anyway good luck.

The best advice when starting college is to take it easy. Never stress too much on schoolwork, as there is a little more to life than that. Take time off from schoolwork once and a while but not too much.
Although you might not find your major ASAP, you should be looking to do something you are interested in. The classes will be much easier if you like what you're studying. Do some outside research on what you want to study as what you might be facing in later years.

Hmm, seems like people have given you a lot of great advice about studying and all that. What can I add to this great list?
mm, o yeah, don't, I repeat, before even stating the entire thing, don't get sucked into the rat race of keeping up with the Jones's. especially if you are on a tight budget. If you get money at the beginning of the semester in one large lump sump, plan out on how to spend it so that when its gone, (and it will be gone quickly) you have some outline on what you spent it on. You will always spend more than you thought you would, so make it count.
Join some clubs, I myself joined the anime club and it has been the best source of friends of common interests outside my major.
Don't feel bad if you change your major several times, just make sure that it remains something that you are in to, and not just in to for the money.
Don't lose your sense of self within the crowds. Ask yourself if you are unsure of your actions, "What the **** am I doing?" If your answer is something you don't sit well with, abandon that action all together.
Thats it, best of luck.

My college does not have a anime club but i found someone at the orietation that is interested to start one. AND we have a perfect promo for it to i will show to everbody when i get to see it but any ways thanks a lot.
After looking into it a little bit and giving it a little thought i think maybe i will change my major to architecture. i am pretty sure i did pretty well in intro to architecture in high school actually i was one of the best ones in the class. any ways i might change it.
