What do you think is most important in an anime?
Sometimes story
sometimes action
sometimes graphic
sometimes music
mostly EVERYTHING

First off, presentation. A lot of anime is based of manga, and thus I have certain expectations. Of course I will know the plot of a manga based anime, but wheres the fun in that? Any animator can copy a manga plot point by point, but what I like to see in the anime is how they interpreted it and what they wanted to add.
Second, plot. If it seems predictable, and I find that my predictions are correct, I lose interest. I want a plot that is going to keep me guessing.
Third, art. Though colored hair is cool =P, it can be repetitive sometimes. I usually like anime that is a bit more down to earth, with natural hair colors, and places we would actually experience in real life. Then again, I do enjoy wild hair colors and the zany antics of some poor soul who gets it all in the end =).

Important factor huh...
Main ones:
- story
- animation
- artwork (for example, hayao miyazaki has quite a good animation and details in his movies, but the artwork for the characters turned me off...)
- NOT TOTALLY YAOI (i can still take ouran level...)
Additional:
- got humor... (even serious stuff like deathnote has it!)
- nice aoundtracks (just to set up the mood...)
- if it's a battle anime, make less use of the magic... I prefer hand to hand combat any day, or maybe weapons, but no excessive magic please... throwing fire blasts at your enemy in the whole fight scene is just stupid... -_-

A good storyline is what gets me curious/keeps me hook on an anime/manga series. I would of course prefer something original as opposed to something formulaic. Which is why I seldom watch short Shoujo and Shounen anime series (It's mostly because the storyline of most of these series somewhat revolve around the same things 75% of the time.) Some examples of anime which have a really good story as a foundation are Rurouni Kenshin, Slam Dunk, Naruto (despite the fact that its slowly getting old), Inuyasha (this one too...), Full Metal Alchemist (I'd say this one has the most interesting plot in the lot), Magic Knight Rayearth, Fushigi Yuugi (despite the fact that I hated this one) etc.
Of course, other factors (although minor) also contributes to and determines an anime's 'watch-ability', some of which include characters, soundtrack, animation, etc.

In my opinion, everything is important. However, if I had to choose the most crucial components is the characters, plot line, and the character style that usually attracts an audience. A dramatic plot line that leaves the viewer crying or so satisfied with the show that they would re-watch is over and over. For example, Air has all of those components along with Honey&Clover that I just can't resist re-watching. ^_^
Well I was studying this sort of topic last summer and I got myself some interesting facts. The most important things an anime should have to hook up fans is a wide long list but to point out some important ones, definatley an anime should have 4 important needs, design, Storyboard, Background info and a good staff. For one to see the best view how to judge these four needs is to have such perspective when watching an anime preview... Does the design look realistic? Is the story catchy or hard to figure out? such questions are made both by the viewer and the creators to figure out the intensity of the anime. Of course there are many type of Genre that fans have as favorite
For me the the story would come first, closely followed by the art/animation. I've watched plenty of shows where the art didn't appeal to me much, because the plots were good. But even if an anime has some of the best art, it probably wouldn't make it to my favorites if the story didn't appeal to me.
Story and character development.
Although, I like the animation and design quality. noein was a good fictional story, but I hated the designs... And specially when I just finished watching FMP! TSR, that´s some really good animation quality.
But, when I look at my favs animes, I notice that most of them have good to great storyline, so I guess thats what works for me.

Emmmmmm I think,The most important thing in anime is the story ,the picture , plot , color in picture , caracteristic from anime , and for who this story , all this most in anime ^.^
It Depends On The Character And Story My Humble Opinion Thats What I Think If The Character Have Strange Personality like a guy who's habit is to run naked then ok i give up on that anime
Story+characters.
A good story is useless if the characters are generic.

Hhmm everything? What makes any anime/move/novel great is the driving plot, characters development and of course interrelationship development. So to me it must be everything ^-^
