Have you ever been made fun of for liking anime?

I have a great interest in Japan, and anime and I see no problem with it. But you see I have a big problem, my cousins and bother hate me for it. I dont know what I did to them to bring forth this terrible hatred but ... I finnaly find something I enjoy and actually like and I just get made fun of for it. I have no friends who know what anime is, nevermind like it, and I'm getting kinda tired of it. My whole family thinks I'm in another one of my "stages" but I think I finally found something I can hold onto for the rest of my life.
Another thing: Does racism bother you?
-People considering everyone from Asia Chinese and other things of that nature
-That really mean joke, that I think a lot of people have heard and if you havent you will think its terrible (pretty much makes me wanna break down and cry) How to Chinese people name their kids? They drop a spoon down the stairs and listen to what noise it makes!! Hhaha, NOT FUNNY
-And last, which is pretty much what I last said... People making fun of how Asians talk. *GRR* It makes me wanna punch em in the face!!
Do this happen to anyone besides me or am I seriously the loser everyone takes me for?

Yea, I know where you are coming from. Up until 3 weeks ago, none of my friends liked anime at all, I just avoid the conversation and nobody really knows about my liking anime except my friends and family. My family is just like w/e makes you happy (I dont have a brother just two sisters so they dont care), but my friends think anime is generally stupid. Its not exactly something I talk to girls about either haha.
But, a friend of mine who likes a lot of the same things I do all over (computer games, ps2, animation, same humor) he recently began to watch some anime and its really exiting for me because its my first friend to actually like anime hehe! So happy
So I suggest getting a friend like that and see if they like it. It depends on what they like in general..my friend liked tech-ish stuff so thats what he first watched. Then he moved on to different anime, i hope we can watch some really good stuff together :D

Ya for a while all my friends thought all anime was like Dragon Ball Z, and no offence to people who like the show, it really isn't the best anime out there. But ya, anyway, they gave me all sorts of crap about watching anime until i found something that appealed to their taste and then they got really into it and started watching anime like crazy. So my hunch is that a lot of people generalize about anime and think its all just like Dragon Ball Z or whatever else they may have watched that wasn't a very good representation of what "anime" is. Another thing is since anime is, well, animated, people may think its just like a cartoon and all the connotation that apply to cartoons they stick to anime. Like its just for kids or its really just stupid and doesn't really have any point to it. Anyway, thats the deductions i've come up with talking with people who don't like anime.
As for racism against the asains, ya it pisses me off. I mean if you're just joking around and stuff and everyone's cool with it, sometimes its funny but if someones really serious about it, then its annoying.

Well, the area where i live is asian (mostly chinese) dominated :D, so we rarely have any problems of racism against asians. actually, almost all of my friends that were from my secondary school were asians lol...and many of them watch anime, but they aren't anime freaks. Of course, we still have a mix of other races (since im in Canada), but i hardly hear any1 discriminating others in my area.
This part is just a comment and a fun bit of information, but i am NOT using this to discriminate other races. Although you might not know this, there are some sociologists who think that Asians are the dominant race in the world due to past historical statistics and trends. There is a researcher named Philip Rushton who wrote this book which i forgot its name where he commented that using historical data, he was able to argue that asian people are "more intelligent and superior than any other race." He ranked most races (i.e. caucassians, asian, french, etc.) and came with this conclusion. The author obviously isn't asian (look at his name), yet he discussed that eventually, the whole world would be asian dominated. Btw, I learned this in class and I thought it was quite interesting, even though i think its ludicrious...

Yeah I can see where this is coming from. I tend not to bring it up that much in conversations, I only have a couple of friends really into anime. Its just like another TV show really. Any other cartoon, there is no need to discriminate against a cartoon. I don't see racism much around where i am with Australia being multicultural so they say. But yeah I agree with you I have only been listening to Japanese music of late and all the shows I watch are Japanese so some friends do pay me out about it but its really just a joke as they are my friends. It also depends on how far you take the obsession and how much you annoy your friends about it. I really dislike the O.C. for example and if someone were to come up to me or one of my friends were to talk about it for longer then the normal 'did you see that episode last night' or 'that part was good/interesting'... Then I'd get pissed off too. So yeah...

It used to happen to me in school... god, I`ve always hated it when people act like that just because you don`t like the same things as them <_< and it was even worse for a friend who also liked anime... I just hated my whole class with a passion, but that`s not the point lol
but now everything`s a lot better in university =) the sad part is that I`m the only one who likes anime and videogames in my class, the nice part is that people there just don`t care and let me be... so I treat them the same way :P
my brother is also an anime fan, most of my friends are also... so no problems there either =)
anyways, if someone tried to make fun of me for liking anime now... I`d just tell him/her to *censored* and *censored* and then even more *censored* and when I finished, I`d start again lmao (I`m not the same person that I was in school :P)

as for racism, it's a thing i totally hate. as for everybody here in AP who knows me, i work in an outsourcing company under an ISP account. my regular customers are americans and you know how terrible an american racist can be. as a matter of fact, i wasn't a racist until i spoke to these darned people. they are mindful of your accent even if you speak it well. also, once they know that you are not an american, they want to be transferred to americans. stuff like that. but generally, i also get calls from nice people so it wasn't a totally bad experience (one even sent me a gift for her appreciation of me helping her)...

I totally know where you're coming from. A lot of my friends know that I really like anime and they joke about it which ticks me off. They also share the view that anime is for kids only and that I'm immature for liking it and one of my friends thought that anime was pretty much porn. On the otherhand, a lot of my other friends really like anime too so I guess it balances out.
Regarding racism, I haven't really experienced alot of it where I live but it still pisses me off when I hear about it. What right does one person have to lord it over another just because their skin colors are different? They shouldn't look down on someone elses culture because it is different from their own and if I ever hear anyone say anything like "go back to your country" or etc., I think I'll deck them 'cuz technically the only people that can say that America was originally their country are the Native Americans.

I definately know how that feels. I have friends that like to make fun of me for it, saying it's something more for little kids, when it's really something that ANYBODY can like. Usually tho, i let them make their own opinion and i shrug it off because if they don't like it, then that's fine. But if they make fun of you personally then i just say screw them, their just jealous because they don't have something they can enjoy.

haha lol...I got used to that now since i've been getting that treatment most of the time. I don't force them into accepting my ideas or anything, I just leave 'em to their opinions since they got theirs and I got mine.

I have been made fun of because i liked anime but on rare ocassions because mostly of the titles like when i borrowed "Hand Maid May" from a friend back when DVD's was just starting out so I had the VHS and people like broadcast "is that porn"? beyond that no one really teased me about it because no one really cared

Hmm...Well, once my mom heard my listening to .hack//sign's "Obsession", and she was like, "What IS that?" Nyek...Made me more cautious about the speakers. >.<;; But now I use headphones instead. XD

My dad's OK-OK with anime; he just likes to make fun of the character's hairstyles. XD
To tell you the truth, my brother was the only one who used to make fun of me. That was until I sat him down and we watched Zoids together. This was followed by Yu-Gi-Oh. Now we both like anime, although I'll watch just about any anime on TV. My bro prefers Zoids, Yu-Gi-Oh, God (?) Save Our King (Yes, the "(?)" is a part of the title...I forgot the Japanese name...) and Fullmetal Alchemist. XD
