Do fansubs help or hurt anime?
To me...
Fansubs HELP Anime.
Is a cheap and easy way to get to know an anime series before you spend the big bucks for it.
If you what to licence it, you have to know somehow what titles are popular to bet on them...
And if you loved the an anime, you probably will get to buy it or at least souvenirs...

I belive they help the anime too. These fansubs are made by fans who like those animes, some even include meanings for different japanese words or events (obon for example). I´ve seen some of the worst fansubs too, but there are a lot to choose.
With the DVD´s is the same with the mangas, you have to wait and see, if that DVD/manga sales are good, no problem, if the´re bad, you can watch/read them ONLY in japanese.
It´s sad, but the subbing industry is reign by money and sales.

Kind of a mixture of both, IMO.
They help, it keeps companies from choosing the wrong titles when licensing new series thus saving them money as well as keeping them on business. But then again, fansubs keep doing the subs and dvd rips after the licensing which hurt sales, which I think the company is partly to blame since most of the time they take a while to license/dub series making the fan lose patience and getting the fansubbed version instead. Also, fansubs keep giving us the shows that may have very little to zero chance of getting licensed. So fansubs do help anime.

Of course fansubs does help.
- There are other countries, which don't have much anime on television and DVDs as USA and Japan.
- Everybody aren't speak English language as their first language.
- Mostly anime on television that I watched in the UK didn't had subtitles. Difficult to understand what's going on for Hard of Hearing and Deafness people.
- People like to learn about culture of Japan through watch fansubs version, which are often edit/remove/change when anime are licensed by companies.
- Correct translations. Very rare dubbed anime are so good.
- 100% uncensored. Not every dubbed anime are on uncensored version DVD sales.
- Gain popularity of the shows. Azumanga Daioh is an example.
- Fans doing fansubs for fans.
Manga scanlations have some similar reasons as fansubs. So I would be still buying anime DVDs if I enjoy watch fansub version like I would be still buy manga volumes if I enjoy read manga chapters on the website.

Fansubs are great if they're done well, though I have to admit that I don't have a whole lot of experience with them so I can't speak for their general quality. Seems like they would help create an audience for an anime that may not have been released yet in English, and maybe provide a little extra motivation for the studios to release an official English version, with the end result being more money in the pockets of the creators.
I also believe fansubs help anime, when I still was into watching anime I watched them with fansubs and if they came to stores in Sweden I bought the interesting once. If I hadn't watched any fansubs I wouldn't have bought any anime at all since I think they are to expensive (everywhere in the world) I can't afforded to buy a dvd with only three episodes and it turns out to be really crappy I would have lost to much money on it.
Also since I am not from America I don't want to have to watch all my anime americanized I want it as the fansubs are in a neutral way. Being Swedish means you have to buy the Americanized anime if you want any anime at all, I think there are about 10 animes which Sweden has license for (pokemon, digemon, Sailor Moon, the basic children stuff).

Honestly, i've always liked the fansubs way more than i have the subs the american companies do. the fansubbers take the time to research the cultural points that americans wouldn't understand and post them during the episode so that you don't have to pause, go check the menu, and then try to find where you were in the episode to understand what is going on
I watched Death Note the first time with fansubs, and the second time translated in italian on Mtv Anime Night, and I can say that are two different things. I like more fansubs! Almost all the anime I watch are with fansubs.

Fansub actually help this industry. It is like promoting the animation to us for the companies. However, I think there is one disadvantage that some people will not but the DVD since the fansub has provided the text to us.

I have been an anime fan since as long as I can remember. I remember the pure insanity it was to have anime imported from Japan. I remember one of the first anime VHS I imported cost damn near 130$ and took almost 6 weeks to be shipped to Canada. In the end it was a pretty good showing, however it was a long await and a very expensive treat.
With fansubs, I can now see the any anime series I with to see and enjoy it in the most purest form. If I do enjoy the series then I will normally import the DVD's from Japan so that I actually own the series, but if fansubs hadn't come around I believe I might not have continued enjoying anime.

I dont know why companies are so up in arms about this. If they just thought about it they would realize that fan subs promote their business, in other words its free advertisement. Just because I saw a episode of code geass from a fan sub site does not mean I wont watch it it when its on adult swim.

Fansubs helps any amime...to a point. As most have pointed out before, most anime/manga don't even make it over to the US a large amount of the time. Often the only way non-Japanese speakers can enjoy anime is the fansub. It's pretty much free advertisement. They only cease to help once the anime reach a peak amount of popularity/the people subing start charging money (which hardly ever happens but when it dose... (-_-) ) Long live fansubs!
