Devil May Cry 1

I guess the guestion is, what am i missing?
i picked up the original DMC a little while ago after some suggested i get it because i really enjoy ninja gaiden (xbox). but, in a way if feels like a steep or two backwards. the graphics arent an issue for me and the atmosphere is well set. my issues are as follow:
1: camera - fighting the first boss (the magma spider), how can it be completely off screen?
2: controls - i feel like im fighting with one arm tied behind my back. ryu (ng) can roll and jump in any direction as well as block. then later on in the game, block/counter attack. dante cant block, but, the weakst of the weak can? i understand blocking fireballs wouldnt be possible, but, how about the daggers, sword, etc used by common minons? and why can dante only roll to the sides and jump forwards/backs when locked on?
3: camera + controls - i cant get used to the roll and jump evades. specially since while locked on, the camera rotates changing what you need to press to roll or jump.
i like the challenge of difficulty, so, thats not a problem. but, i cant get my head wrapped around those issues. ill also admit that a lot more play time would help so i could get used to it. though, when the frustration comes from the base game play and not the enemy ive troubles justifying the time.
does dmc3 have the same "issues"?
im just starting to think the dmc series isnt for me.

Is this game any fun
Well, for the Devil May Cry series, I had never really had problesm with the camera angle. You can Block in Devil May Cry 3 for offer fighting stye changes. Each fighting style has its own features to offer and Royal Guard style gives you the ability to block. However, I don't feel that blocking uis a necessity. You get use to it I guess. I suggest renting the game first maybe. If Devil may Cry isn't the series for you, try the Onimusha series. I love the Onimusha series.
... dude, seriously, how can you compare a game like Devil May Cry with Ninja Gaiden? There's a 2 years difference between them, your comparison is totally and absolutely unfair. Devil May Cry started exploring and innovating in the 3D action games' scene, using a control, camera and overall gameplay schemes that weren't possible in the past generation of consoles (PSOne, N64), and the first Devil May Cry is still one of the best and most influencing games in the 128 bits consoles' era. Too bad the 2nd and 3rd DMC games weren't as the same level.
In fact, what Ninja Gaiden did was to take all the elements Devil May Cry imposed, improving and adding new things to something that was already very good. That's why Ninja Gaiden did so great.

Well, I agree that DMC 2&3 weren't nearly as innovative, and I'll be the first to point out that DMC2 was a disappointing step backwards in game quality. However, in many areas DMC3 is a much better game then any of it's predecessors. The camera is much better (with a few exceptions) and the controls offer you more options in the way of dodging and blocking (sadly, some of the evasive maneuvers are lost if you chose the ability to block).
Some of the issues still persist into the 3rd title, though they aren't nearly as severe as they where in the original. I recommend you at least rent the third one to decide if it's meets your standards better.
BTW, due to the camera, the phantom fight you refer to is the most difficult fight in the game. Others are tough, but since you can usually keep a bead on them it's not such an issue.

The first Devil May Cry was great... when it first came out. Before there were other kick-ass action games like Ninja Gaiden. But you can't really compare the two since Ninja Gaiden came out a few years later and on a different system. But it was great game during it's time. And of course over the years... the Devil May Cry series has improve greatly. Except for DMC2... which we will pretend it never happen. Hahahaha!! But DMC3 made up for it.
Well I loved 1 and 3. I didint hate 2 THAT much but still ewwww and I cant wait for DMC4 :D

I have the 3 Devil May Cry games. In fact, I always try to think that the gaming store gave me DMC2 and DMC3 for free, when I bought the first game.
Devil May Cry 3 is totally superior to DMC2, that's for sure and I won't deny it, but it has a lot of design issues that make the game harder not because of the game's nature, but because of absurd details like:
-Very few checkpoints in the levels. Seriously, considering how games are nowadays, making this is a big mistake. It makes the game not only (unnecessarily) difficult, but also very frustrating, specially when fighting bosses ("oh my, I'm gonna kill this... WHA? did he kill me? and must I start from practically the beginning of the level? sheez...").
-Enemies aren't smart. They're just in big numbers and attacking you like if they were in a eternal frenezi. And most of the time it's retarded.
-Enemies do take a lot of your energy :/ In order to compensate their "meh" AI patterns. Just look at how ridiculous the bosses are.
You don't find such issues even in Ninja Gaiden Black.
... I thought DMC 1&3 were great. Never really played 2 since my brothers told me that it sucked so... meh.
...Anyway...
...Anyway...

I really liked Devil May Cry when it came out, problem I have is over the years, so many new ways of playing have come, and when I try and go back to it, it just seems too archaic in some areas. Not really fair, since the game is a few years old, but the thrill wore off for me.

I really enjoy playing Devil May Cry series. initially I agree with you the game had some mistakes in the camera motion, and the controls they weren't as fluid as Ryu's in Ninja Gaiden. In DMC 3 they've improved those issues and let's consider that playing with Dante or Vergil is a complete different experience than playing Ryu.
So they're not better but they're different. A good different I'd say!

I first had troubles with the game like what to do and such. True there isnt a block move and such. I guess this is the reason why Dante has guns. The more he does suppression fire on his enemies, the more damage his makes. IMO I think the camera was alright. Was never an issue actually in my case.

Pretty much everyone has said it already, but Devil May Cry came out way before Ninja gaiden. That would be like going back to Super Mario World and complaining that Mario doesn't have the butt stomp. Devil May Cry when it first came out was awesome and nothing could touch it. Ninja Gaiden then improved upon that.
