Not too much for me to say about this wallpaper that hasn't already been said: Dalarty has provided a descriptive walk through all the way from the concept idea, to its execution and ultimately its fruition. And you can really see how that careful planning paid off. But it just goes to show, good ideas take time---and a whole lot of patience!

Heh... you're never going to get a straight answer to that question. Partially it will depend on what kind of playstyle you are looking for in a MMO game. But I might as well give you my opinion on several modern MMO games. I'm sure there will be plenty of other people in here to give you their own opinion and flame mine ;-)

If you have never played any MMO before in your live, World of Warcraft is a good one to start with. It's designed to be real easy to get into and play, and yet has a lot of content in it. It also contains a good chunk of Player vs Player (PvP) action for those that like that. Some people who consider themselves "hardcore" however, complain that the game is too easy. This is also pretty much the only game you can play solo and actually do quests without grinding all the way to the maximum level, if you have to.

If you're worried about a monthly fee and are highly interested in PvP play, Guild Wars will probably work out well. They don't charge a monthly fee at all, but they do release a full-priced game/expansion every 6 months or so. It's focused on mostly one thing: Arena PvP battles. There is a significant chunk of PvE content if that's more your thing but if you don't like PvP, this is not one to get.

City of Heroes/City of Villians is pretty much your only choice if you want to play a super-hero/super-villian. Fortunately it's a pretty good one. It does suffer a little bit from being a bit simplistic and a lack of things to do other then going out and beating on people, but they've been adding content recently to slightly alleviate that. It is also relatively easy to get into, and has the best character generator in the MMO market.

Final Fantasy XI is a decent choice if you're a huge Final Fantasy fan. It's got a unique combat system that relies on chaining moves with other people at later levels to do massive amounts of damange, and it has an interesting job system as well. Unfortunately the game suffers from being a massive grind, and one of the more harsher death penalties in the genre. Grouping is also required past level 10 or so.

Everquest 2 is really only for those that are fans of the original Everquest. Sony has been struggling to get it more popularity, and it seems like the new expansion that was just released is a step in the right direction. I would only recommend this game if you really, really like the setting and are willing to put up with some odd design choices and (IMO) inferior artistic direction.

Liniage 2 (and pretty much every other Korean-created MMO game) focuses very heavily on world PvP where anyone can gank anyone else with almost no repercussions. They also have huge grinds with almost no quests and an absurd amount of griefing. The big payoff seems to be the massive city sieges and PvP events these types of games are based around, but I could never stand the gameplay for that long.

Games that I haven't mentioned I either haven't put enough time into to give an honest opinion, I consider to be rather poor, or are old games.

I hate to say it... but WoW probably is one of the best one outs there. Pretty graphics, easy to pick up, huge community, a lot to do, and really a whole lot of fun. I am not a big fan of Lineage 2... I love the graphics, hate the farming/grinding of the game. EQ2, never played it, so I have no opinion. One of the highest rated MMO's is Eve Online, which I currently still play. Space game, very well thought out and player run (Meaning the players determine the fate of the universe).

But each game usually satisfies a certain individual, meaning you can't just stamp it being the best. A lot of them have different aspects.

Well from your post i think you are new to the mmo world so i would highly suggest playing World of warcraft since like Azumoth said you can just go in and play with no difficulties. But if after you get used to it and get kind of bored with the endgame you can always either try some of the more difficult mmo's like the Final Fantasy XI or Rappelz. I would recommend Lineage 2 since it has given me joy from the beginning, but most come to hate it because of the botters. Dont just skip this game because of that though because to me the game was amazing if you meet the right people and get into a good clan then it could be one of the best mmo's you will ever play. You can also try Guild Wars for a first since it doesnt really require that much knowledge in mmo movement or anything, you just have to be really good in thinking about strategy because the game doesnt revolve around lvling it revolves around skill. Good luck in finding your perfect mmo and have fun!

Everquest 1 is by far the best in my opinion.

I've played EQ1, EQ2, FF11, Lineage 2 Beta, And I've watched my friends play literally hundreds of hours of WoW. Everquest smokes all of these by far. I played EQ for about 6 years, you will never get sick of everquest, it's really complicated but o so rewarding. I was one of the best Bards on my server =). Even my friends that played WoW for a long time say they still like EQ1 alot better. WoW is a really noob friendly MMORPG that people regret picking up when they hit level 60 b/c theres nothing to do but raid and pvp, plus the sheer size of the WoW community is sickening, there are a handful of assholes everywhere you go cuz its a popular game. The Everquest community is one of the nicest communities that you can play with, not that there anent jerks on EQ just alot less. GL on your decision.

The best MMOG maybe is CABAL and World of Warcraft(in graphic), Gunbound and Ragnarok(in gameplay). But my favourite is Gunbound, because it need tactic and skill and it's FREE :)

I play FFXI.

I really like it. Ive played WoW, Ive played RO, Ive played EQ 1 and 2. I played Lineage 2. Ive played Guild Wars. FFXI is the only one Ive kept. I really did like RO too and would have kept it if it didnt become Pay to Play, the people running it didnt make it good enough in my opinion to pay for it. But Ill pay for FFXI. Its the best in my opinion so far, and everything I wanted, but alot of people dONT like it, so its not for everyone I guess.

Can't go wrong with wow...

Added bonus of the expansion Buring Crusade coming out soon.

FOr those that say it is too easy... the time it takes to get from level 1 to 60 (the maximum level limit in WoW) will be the same amount of time it takes to get from 60 - 70 (the new max with the exapnsion pack). The common gear at 70 will be as good if not better than the epics and uniques of level 60.

The expansion pack will bring back a TON of old players and hopefully draw in some new blood as well.

I still favor Guild Wars because:
1) ive played it over 2+ years and only had to buy the 2 games @$50each
2) free online play forever, they never seem to delete your account even when its been inactive for over 2 years
3) the graphics...i prefer realistic proportionate players...not like the caricatures of WoW
the bad thing is..its pretty short game...the first GW was really long and the 2nd expansion was only 1/4th the length of the first. i havent played the newest Nightfall expansion yet

i tried to play Ragnarok on a privite server but it just wasnt that interesting because the cities were pretty pretty empty and there was always some douche on a ostrich threating me and its funny cuz i just kept pissing him off

i was hesitant to play WoW, then a friend let me try to free trail...and yeah in the end i didnt still didnt like it

im waiting for Sun: Soul Of The Ultimate Nation and Huxley to come out [its been in production for a while ;/] from www.webzen.com

In compliance with what people said, i have played Guild Wars, Final Fantasy XI (for 4 years), Lineage II, World Of Warcraft, and PristonTale. I will write the cons, and pros of each and well, everyone has their own taste so theyll have to decide which is really the best since in my opinion, every intellectual piece of work resonates with a specific individual.

Ill start with Final Fantasy XI:
Pros:
O- One of the most challenging, if not the most challenging games iv played. It requires skill, endurance, and patience to get about anything done. Some tasks take actual real life years to accomplish, and until today (5 years after game has been published) not many people own a fully upgraded Dynamis weapon.
O- Lots of adventures.
O- Cozy GUI, cities, and towns, also nice storyline.

Cons:
O- Camping some monsters for specific items involves 9~18 hours of waiting for 1 monster to pop out.
O- Competition against monsters may involve you, and in some cases, 200 other people (for huge raid monsters)
O- Slightly aggressive community.

Secondly Guild Wars:
Pros:
O- Amazing graphics, the best MMORPG graphics you will find actually.
O- Top notch AI
O- Quality servers
O- No monthly fees
O- New expansion every 6 months
O- Everyone gets their own copy of the map when they zone out of a town (no need to compete against others on monsters, or wait for hours to claim a certain monster)
O- Lots of fast updates (no server down times either)

Cons:
O- Very limited level cap (level 20 max)
O- Slightly repatative when you finish all missions
O- PvP is very predictable

Lineage II:
Well, this game really redefined the meaning of grinding...
Pros:
O- Amazing castle seiges, and PvP schematics that involve politics, ranks, and skill
O- Nicely laid out cities and towns
O- Amusingly nice graphics (Unreal Tournament 3 engine, good graphics)
O- Expansion packs are free

Cons:
O- After level 65, it may take almost 18 hours to gain one level
O- Higher levels continously kill lower levels (since anyone, can kill anyone ~ which is fun, but not when your low level)
O- Unstable engine (lots of server and client crashes)
O- Major bots and economy is very unstable ~ 80% of players buy Adena

World Of Warcraft:
Well, i really started this game because after watching the anime series .Hack//Sign, i really wanted to play an MMORPG with as much similarties. Most MMORPGS tend to lack the little things, like nice cozy warm inns, nice adventurous areas, and best of all, a very unpredictable enviroment.
Pros:
O- Very dynamic enviroment
O- Nicely laid out items, and gear (including shoulder armor ~ which most games disinclude)
O- Any item you equip will show up on your charecter (some games, such as FFXi do not allow you to see the belt your wearing on your charecter, and many items look alike)
O- Nice community
O- Decent economy (you can buy what you see, nothing is impossible)
O- Alot of tradional MMORPG mechanics have been redesigned to be fairer
O- Frequent updates

Cons:
O- Alot of players, and slightly little variety of classes and professions in my opinion
O- Slightly unbalanced racial stats (horde have very powerfull racial based abilities, where has alliance has more stats that are benifical to PvE)
O- Horde towns are harder to get to, alliance towns have a 180~360 degree entry point (such as astraanar which can be entered from any direction)

And thats all i have for my personal reviews of these mmos ^-^
A final thing, Lineage II used to have a system where when 1 player kills another for no reason, they turn red. A player that turns red, when killed, drops an item (disencourages random killing) It now has been removed with chronicle 5.

The best one is the one you like the best :)

Although I have to say that Guild Wars was too much about walking and waiting than anything.

I like Guild Wars the best because I'm more of a casual mmog player and the game satisfies me for a short PvP battle once and a while, also the controls are simple for anybody to learn. Although the game has some hardcore gameplay elements like trying to raise your Guilds rank in seasonal tournaments against the best players and winning prizes. They even have holidays where you compete to get points to exchange for a prize, and they also give your created character a present on its birthday. I play on a 56k modem and it plays great the updates aren't that big and they fix problems quick, great service. Guild Wars is made by part of the team of Baldur's Gate so the game has great quality developers behind it. Lineage 2 and WoW are great too if paying monthly fees isn't a big deal for you.
