Holy crap! I just bought a Tamagotchi!
Virtual pets can't exactly be called a fad now since its been over a decade since their advent. I'm pretty sure that the technology is here to stay, just varying in complexity. But again, why digital when there's analog? Oh, and limit discussions only to virtual pets and not into digital simulation in general.
Heres a backgrounder on Tamagotchi. you wouldn't guess how many versions there are

Of course you don't get to form a strong relationship with a virtual pet like you can with a real one (I don't think anyone would mourn over the death of a digital pet) but if you're buying a digital pet you're probably not looking for that in the first place.
Thank you.

that makes my day.
haha, yeah people buy into fads becasue they need to feel inclusive in the universal existence, that's my take.
never had a true "tomagotchi", but I sure did have the digimon one...~_~
What I think about virtual pets: they are lovable (even more nowadays with the new ones, like nintendogs), they don't need to be taken out for a walk, buy extra toys, clean poop, wash them, take space, are noisy and so on. Of course within the game you do those things, but it all comes down to pushing a button. All in all, they are quite cute, but if I were to have kids I would buy them a real pet, and I would like one right now too, but my apartment doesn't allow pets.
In theory they sounded great, but they became annoying after a while. Just like the Furbys. >_>
Silent-Requiem21I would think the main reason people buy these virtual pets is because they don't want to deal with the hassle of owning a real one -- plus they're a whole lot cheaper to maintain. A person may not be fully committed to owning and taking care of a pet so I suppose a virtual pet is the best alternative for a real one -- it's okay to get 'bored' with a virtual pet, but it's a no-no to get bored with a real pet and just leave it there to die.
I get your point, same with the allergy concerns. Virtual pets are lame substitutes for people who can't have real living animals. I guess this was the primary reason why these things were built in the first place: something to beat the boredom. But is it just that or does it go much deeper for some individuals? Like an attraction to AI? Right now, virtual pets are the only thing I could think of that have some sort of artificial intelligence in them and are commercially available other than those floor-sweeping robots. Especially now that a lot of virtual pets have access or link-up to the net, these pets seem to get smarter and smarter after every incarnation.

i used to have one xD but forgot where it was, so it died many times o_o''..
Hmm and i don't think the main reason to people build it at the first place was 'cause some people can't have real pets.. imo they just wanted something to people have to spend the time, and get some fun, nothing more.. that is easy to use and there no limit of age to have one. Like, you are in a bank line, or something and is all boring at that time, you say: "Oh, let me check my tamagochi.." xD

Take this
