You need to clean the scans.
Add a little more to the background
If the background is going dark make the contrast of the scan darker.

The white snowy things on Shinn and Stellar are flower petals or do you mean the stars in the sky?

Yes, you should work on extraction a bit more. zoom in your scan, and use either a lasso or pen tool, don't know which one you prefer more ^^
