Where do you start?

What i mean is that do you start visualising a picture in your head, then you go about looking for the appropriate scan to fit your idea...
or do you actually look at a scan & then think of what to do about it?
basically i'm one who usually look at the scan 1st.. but i find that i have trouble creating nice wallpapers from the scans.. because somehow my imagination seemed to be stuck.. of course i must say first that i'm very nice to doing wallpapers... i'm still learning of course..
so i'll appreciate it if people here can help me out abit..
another problem i have though it's kinda OOT here.. but i'll say it anyway.. is that i have problem doing up a nice background.. i wanna do something different.. yet i'm also limited by my skills and all.. :'(

I actually look at the scan first and then think about what to do with it, since I usually think that way with wallpapers, though when Im webdesigning Ill think of an idea first and then something *nods*
Yeah, it kind of varies with me, sometimes I come up with an idea first and then find a scan, and other times its the scan that comes first...as for backgrounds, try looking over tutorials on the web. That ought to help you out.
There's generally 2 types of waller in my mind
1. Find a real nice scan they like and construct a background around it
2. constrcut a real nice background and find a scan to fit on it
Lol which ever works for you, I tend to lean towards the first type because I like to wall animes I like not just some random scan

Well you should really read my description on my newest wall i started a DNAngel wall and finished a Trinity Blood wall. So neither for me i go and where i stop i dont know. I first start from the scan.

Depends what Im working on.. Sometimes i base bgs of my scans, sometimes its the opposite, and sometimes im making the wall/layout/whatever based on a song (in which i get tired of since a layout takes an hour+ or so and a song is 5 minutes... so.....) Most of the time i just "wing" it... ^_~

Usually I choose the character/series beforehand, and work out what to do after extracting the image. Though there are times when I decide what to do with the wallpaper first. It's a bit different for each one.
Hihi! thank you for all your replies..i guess there's no one way to it... currently i'm workin on this wall.. because of the scan... coz like what xcf33 mentioned... i'm more of the kind where i prefer to do anime characters that i know..
but now i'm kinda stuck because i have no idea what to use for the background.. it's actually a scan of kotarou & misha from pita ten in wedding gown & suit...
i'm currently trying out a simple background of grass, clouds.. & sky.. but some more.. the feel is kinda wrong.. hmm... i dunno... i tried to think of a church in the background.. but that feels wrong too...
i guess i just lack some imaginations?!?!
